What is Digital Julfa Network? How to become unicorn company? How will Orion Summit help Armenian startups?

NEWS.am
Armenia – June 22 2022

The former trade network of Julfa is presented to the world in a new way, in accordance with the requirements of the 21st century, and already in the world of digital technology. The Digital Julfa Network was officially launched Wednesday as part of the Orion Summit 2022 technology summit in Yerevan—and as an initiative uniting the pan-Armenian intellectual, technological, commercial, and cultural potential.

For centuries, Armenians have been able to create a large network in economy, law, trade, and innovation without great opportunities for communication. It has existed for 300 years, their followers still work in the Mekhitarist and Lazarian seminaries. Now the Armenian specialists have set themselves the task of restoring all that—naturally, with innovative solutions.

Emma Arakelyan, CEO and Founder of Orion Worldwide Innovations—a startup developer—and Co-Founding Partner of BAJ Accelerator, is sure that this potential exists in education and they want to restore it all.

"In the time of New Julfa, all that was from Amsterdam to Manila. Under the conditions of our digital economy, we can expand it to make it global. Our goal is to use the power of Armenia’s mind, to create and develop in Armenia the capacity to do business and to spread it all over the world through cooperation, to create wealth, prosperity, the right world position for Armenia. We have set a great goal for Armenia to have its position in all these spheres," she says.

How will the Digital Julfa Network be created?

“In order to create the Digital Julfa Network, all branches of Armenia’s economy must be involved. The role of the banking system is very important here. Science and technology companies, faculty, and startups should be involved in the network, as it provides greater opportunities for them. Although the initiative started in Armenia, it should not be limited to Armenia,” Emma Arakelyan assures.

"Mark Chenian, a member of the board of the Union of Armenian Friends, one of the goals of which is to develop and position Armenia’s economy, has formed a large group of 156 scientists, whose summit will be on Lazarus Island, which was one of the islands of Julfa. This is a continuation of the network. Another important circumstance is that we cooperate with venture companies, banking companies, and the Central Bank of Armenia. There are various matters whereby all companies can create power together to bring wealth and prosperity," said the Orion Worldwide Innovations CEO.

How to become a unicorn company?

A startup can go on the road to become a unicorn company if it aims to become a global company. Emma Arakelyan notes that their various investors are encouraged to invest in both Armenian companies operating in Armenia and Armenian companies not operating in Armenia in order to strengthen the Armenian potential. "That is, we unite our entire collective force—with 10-12 million Armenians, circling distances that are not important because we live in a digital economy. We have to think globally," she said.

Although there are many trends in the IT sector in the world right now, Orion Worldwide Innovations is ready to support, create investment opportunities for companies that are particularly interested in artificial intelligence. "Artificial intelligence is having an increasingly profound effect on all economies and companies. Artificial intelligence is very important, security solutions, FinTech, etc. We are interested in such companies, which have attracted some attention,” says Emma Arakelyan.

Of the 95 companies involved in the project, 43 are Armenian, and three of them—Embodied, cognaize, and Scylla—are already on their way to global impact. There are five new companies that have registered quite a rapid growth in Armenia and have great potential.

What is the state of education in Armenia?

"Basic education in Armenia is well-founded," says Emma Arakelyan. However, in order to be ready for the challenges of the world market, to achieve success, it would be good for Armenia’s universities to create continuous programs, pay great attention to the teaching of mathematics, and offer innovative approaches in education.

"Along with all this, I see that some companies—such as Picsart and Synopsys—offer their lessons, which is very welcome; and we have founded the BAJ Unicorn Academy, and realizing what specialists the unicorn companies need, after consulting and analyzing all this, we decided to found it. We work with the faculty of the Armenian Code Academy. Today we will have 19 graduates. This is our first class, which started in January. Our goal is for them to get a job at one of these companies; if not, they will have a big impact on the market. We will, of course, continue this program. We will make sure that at least 20-25 students graduate once a year," she says.

How will all the initiatives be connected in one system?

The Orion Worldwide Innovations team has decided that such summits will be held in various countries of the world. The next one will be held in 2023 in New York, then in Frankfurt, and so on. Orion Worldwide Innovations takes steps to make Armenia’s companies and professionals better acquainted with and better understand that they are offered great opportunities in various fields of various countries, which Armenian specialists and Armenian companies definitely have the potential to use and implement them best.

Orion Worldwide Innovations opened an office in Armenia during the coronavirus pandemic in order to be more attentive to Armenia and not to miss the Armenian talent. "In fifteen months, we have been able to procure $27 million in investments for our Armenian companies from global venture companies. The three aforementioned companies—Embodied, cognaize, and Scylla—are going to enter the market for new investments. They have grown a lot and achieved great success in recent months. Our goal is to double the [$]27 million in 2022 and make it more than [$]50 million,” says Emma Arakelyan.

Armenia MP: I’m surprised how our women colleagues at PACE can speak in support of war, violence

NEWS.am
Armenia – June 22 2022

Sona Ghazaryan, a member of Armenia’s delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), addressed the PACE plenary session.

“At the beginning of the 20th century the movement for women's right to vote was spreading worldwide.

I'm very happy to say that Armenia was already having success.

In 1919, the first direct parliamentarian elections were held under the universal suffrage.

Every person over the age of 20 had the right to vote, regardless of gender, ethnicity or religious belief.

Three female deputies were in the parliament.

Among them, was Ms. Berjouhi Barseghian, whose grandchild many of you will recognize as the city mayor of Strasbourg – Jeanne Barseghian [who] was her granddaughter.

Diana Abgar, another Armenian strong woman, took a different path to public life. On Friday 2 July 1920, she was appointed Armenia's envoy to Japan. Serving until 1921, she ranked as one of the world's first female ambassadors.

Nowadays, currently in our parliament, women's representation is higher than ever, but still not enough at 35%.

Highly appreciating the role of women, civil society organizations were actively engaged with them in the law-making process, so that will lead to even more women's participation in legislative bodies.

Having peace agenda as one of the main agendas for our ruling party, I can reassure you that women MPs are also engaged in the decision-making processes.

The Republic of Armenia has also developed the second national action plan on the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, reaffirming its readiness to continue its work on peace and security.

The program addresses the issues and challenges faced by women displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh as a result of the devastating war unleashed by Azerbaijan against Nagorno-Karabakh in the autumn of 2020.

As the result of the aggressive war, more than 91 000 people were forcibly displaced and received asylum in Armenia, 88% of whom were women and children.

The war of aggression started during the Covid-19 pandemic. That is complicating the difficult situation for women and girls.

The program presents the problems of women and girls in crisis, addressing their security component.

The program addresses the issue of forcibly displaced women, the security challenges posed by the new border situation, and their impact on women and girls.

Considering the above-mentioned, I need to be very sincere and to tell you that I'm very much surprised to hear how our women colleagues here at the Parliamentary Assembly and other high-Ievel female officials in the neighboring countries can speak in support of war and violence, finding justifications—this should not be acceptable,” the Armenian MP stated, in particular.

Opposition activists protest outside Armenian Prosecutor’s Office

Panorama
Armenia – June 15 2022

Members of the resistance movement launched by Armenia’s opposition staged a protest outside the Prosecutor General's Office in Yerevan on Wednesday.

Opposition Hayastan bloc MP Aram Vardevanyan denounced the arrests of opposition protesters based on the testimonies of police officers.

“The current authorities, who came to power through acts of civil disobedience, once said that the testimony of a police officer could not serve as a basis for arresting a person. However, people are now being held in custody based on it,” he said via a loudspeaker.

Meanwhile, the MP said no policeman has been arrested and prosecuted for using violence against demonstrators demanding Nikol Pashinyan’s resignation during around 40 days of protests in Yerevan.

“The Prosecutor's Office should not shy away from charging and prosecuting police officers,” the lawmaker noted.

Vardevanyan said peaceful protests will continue until Pashinyan’s ouster.

Afterwards, the opposition activists blocked a road near the building of the law enforcement agency.

No matter what statements are made, Nagorno Karabakh issue continues to exist – Mirzoyan's response to Aliyev

YEREVAN, JUNE 17, ARMENPRESS. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan responded to the statements of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev that Armenia is not sincere in the process of achieving peace, it is delaying the process of unblocking the region. The questions of ARMENPRESS and FM Mirzoyan’s answers on the issue are presented below.

Question – The President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev stated in his speech yesterday that Armenia is not sincere in the process of achieving peace. How would you comment on that?

Answer - The Government of the Republic of Armenia has repeatedly proved its readiness to make efforts for the establishment of long-term stability and peace in the South Caucasus. At the same time, it is obvious that these efforts cannot be unilateral, Azerbaijan must also take practical and sincere steps in this direction. The establishment of peace cannot be the result of the efforts of one side alone, and peace talks cannot be based on the proposals of one side alone.

It is also obvious that for the success of these efforts, it is necessary to address the whole set of existing problems that have caused the conflict in order to find a solution acceptable to all parties. In this context, the statements made by official Baku that Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is solved are at least not understood or, moreover, cast doubt on the sincerity of the Azerbaijani authorities' intention to achieve peace. No matter what statements are made, the Nagorno-Karabakh issue will continue to exist as long as the issues of security, sufficient guarantees for the protection of all rights of the Armenians of Artsakh, and the status of Nagorno-Karabakh arising from them are not addressed. In the modern world, the situation created by the use of force cannot be the solution to a problem.

The assertion that as a result of the use of force even Nagorno Karabakh does not exist, does not speak about the constructiveness of Azerbaijan. Needless to say that this, of course, corresponds neither to the de-facto reality, the most important part of which is the existence of Artsakh Armenians in Artsakh and the presence of Russian peacekeeping forces to ensure their security, nor the November 9 trilateral declaration, which stopped the war and clearly defines the existence of Nagorno Karabakh.

The same can be said about the statements of the Azerbaijani authorities on the non-existence of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs. First of all, no one has suspended it or can suspend the international mandate of the Co-chairs to contribute to the political settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict without the relevant decision of the international institute defining it. In that case, it is incomprehensible that if the parties really want to negotiate sincerely, to find mutually acceptable solutions, to achieve a stable, comprehensive peace, then why should not those talks take place in the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs’ format? A format which has the clear support of the international community and not to using its experience and potential is simply not logical and reasonable.

Question – Ilham Aliyev claims that the Armenian side is delaying the process of unblocking the region. What can you say about this?

Answer – We have always stated that we are interested in opening all the transport and economic infrastructures in the region. This is evidenced by the trilateral statements adopted by the Russian mediation on January 11 and November 26, as well as the agreements reached in Brussels.

I would like to emphasize that Armenia has been involved in the discussions in good faith, the process would have been much smoother if there were no statements by Azerbaijan about extraterritorial corridor, which have nothing to do with the trilateral declaration of November 9, as well as with the commitments assumed by the statements I mentioned.

As for Azerbaijan's efforts to draw parallels between the Lachin corridor and the regional transport routes to be unblocked, they obviously cannot have the same status, at least arising from the provisions of the trilateral declaration signed on November 9, 2020, which clearly define the status of the Lachin corridor. Moreover, Nagorno Karabakh and the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic have different statuses, different neighborhoods, different security environments. Accordingly, their relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan cannot be identical.

I would like to emphasize again that the November 9 declaration envisages unblocking of all infrastructures in the region, while Azerbaijan is delaying in taking steps in this direction. We are ready for unblocking the region within the framework of the agreements on the preservation of the sovereignty of the countries and jurisdiction over roads, and the recent talks between the Deputy Prime Ministers of the two countries in Moscow followed this logic.

Opposition MP blames authorities’ policy for Aliyev’s Artsakh remarks

Panorama
Armenia –

MP Aram Vardevanyan of the opposition Hayastan bloc blamed the incumbent Armenian authorities’ policy for Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s latest statements on Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).

"Due to the foreign policy pursued by the current authorities, the Azerbaijani authorities now announce that the issue of Artsakh's status does not exist,” he wrote on Facebook on Friday.

“That is, they do not speak about the right to self-determination, they do not visit Artsakh, and now they have to refrain from using the word "status".

“Armenia will have a government that won't talk about implementing social programs in Artsakh and “brag” only about it, but will consider the realization of the right of the Artsakh Republic to self-determination and the international recognition of its status a priority and a sacred duty.

“This is the precept of Armenia's Declaration of Independence and those who deviate from it can no longer remain in power,” Vardevanyan said.

Addressing the IX Global Baku Forum on Thursday, Aliyev urged Armenia to stop raising the issue of Karabakh’s status.

He echoed his claims that Nagorno-Karabakh does not exist, adding "any mention of its status will only lead to new problems."

Sports: Armenia manager Joaquin Caparros slams ‘barbaric’ UEFA Nations League schedule

June 6 2022
FIXTURE NIGHTMARE

  • David Friel

ARMENIA boss Joaquin Caparros has slammed Uefa’s Nations League scheduling as BARBARIC.

The Spaniard hit out last night after they were forced to play four games in ten days — with a long-distance trip to Scotland in the middle.

Joaquin Caparros is unhappy with UEFA's Nations League fixture schedule

Armenia beat the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in Yerevan on Saturday but Caparros admits that his players are already shattered ahead of Wednesday’s Hampden visit.

He said: “Playing four matches in ten days is barbaric. We must try to recover from the Ireland game and then travel to Scotland.

“The problem is with the players’ recovery process, as we are the team that must be 100 per cent committed.

“We will use all of the available means to rehabilitate the players in time for Wednesday.

“But there will be rotation in my team — I need to think of the  condition of the squad.”

Armenia were beaten 9-0 by Norway in March but stunned Ireland with a 1-0 victory.

Stephen Kenny’s men toiled in the suffocating heat of Yerevan and Caparros hailed his players for bouncing back from the previous humiliation.

They now head to Scotland for Wednesday’s match before a stop-off in Poland to play Ukraine on Saturday.

Armenia then finish off a four-game burst with the Scots’ visit on Tuesday, June 14.

Caparros said: “It was easy for the players to feel down mentally after the Norway game.

“But the boys have good character and they proved it.

“It’s one of the greatest victories of the Armenian football team because Ireland is a very good team.”

Meanwhile, Craig Gordon believes that Scotland can handle the heat — as they look to earn six points in the Armenia double-header.

Gordon reckons Armenia's victory at the weekend should act as a warning for the Scots.

Ahead of Steve Clarke’s side welcoming Armenia to Hampden on Wednesday and heading there a week later — with a match against Ireland in Dublin in between.

Those three games will shape the Nations League group — as Scotland look to earn top spot along with Ukraine.

Scotland No1 Gordon would love to see a repeat of his experience facing Armenian champions Alashkert.

Celtic beat them 3-0 home and away in Champions League qualifiers in 2018.

YSU chief refuses to meet with opposition MPs

Panorama
Armenia – May 31 2022

Rector of the Yerevan State University (YSU) Hovhannes Hovhannisyan on Tuesday locked his office door from the inside, avoiding a meeting with the opposition lawmakers who entered the university building during daily anti-government protests in Yerevan.

The MPs wanted to talk to the YSU chief about the issues raised by them, including Artsakh’s status and Armenian-Turkish relations.

Hovhannisyan's spokesperson told the lawmakers that the rector was not in the building.

“We went up to the rector's office and the male rector, seeing that the deputies were going up, locked the door from the inside,” Hayastan bloc MP Anna Grigoryan said after coming out of the building.

"Mr. Hovhannisyan, you can now open the door and windows for some fresh air. We have come down,” she said.

The MPs wanted to meet with ministers earlier in the day, but the latter also avoided a meeting.
