Sports: Bonucci: ‘Armenia are always tough’

Bonucci: 'Armenia are always tough'

Leonardo Bonucci warned Armenia are “always tough” and the 2-2 draw effectively ruined their World Cup campaign, while revealing Henrikh Mkhitaryan memories.

The Euro 2020 qualifier kicks off on in Yerevan on Thursday at 17.00 UK time.

There is only one Italy player left in the current squad who faced Armenia in both previous Euro qualifier games in 2012-13.

“Those were difficult games. In the first leg, we were able to bring home three points in the last 10 minutes, while the 2-2 draw in Naples compromised our World Cup qualification, as that result meant we dropped out of the top seeds for the next draw,” said Bonucci in his Press conference.

“Armenia are always tough, they got an important result in Greece and that boosted their enthusiasm. We know everyone gives their all against Italy, as our visit generates a lot of attention, but we have come here to get the points.”

Armenia captain Mkhitaryan joined Roma on loan from Arsenal on transfer deadline day.

“Roma have made a great signing. Mkhitaryan is important on an international level, we’ve clashed a few times and he was the first player I marked in the Champions League for Shakhtar Donetsk. Serie A is difficult to play in, but I am sure he’ll adapt and do well for the Giallorossi.”

Giorgio Chiellini had surgery this week and will be out for around six months after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.

“We wish him all the best, he’s fired up for this challenge. We will miss his experience, charisma, leadership, talent and ability to help his teammates during difficult moments of the game. We hope he returns as soon as possible.

“We are different defenders, different people. I always try to give hunger, adrenaline and focus, Giorgio is a pillar of the Juventus and Italy squad, so in the months of his absence, I’ll try to keep things stable for when he returns!”

Bonucci was asked if the influx of overseas players is damaging to the growth of Italian talent.

“There has been an increase in foreign players, but also young Italians have taken on important roles at their clubs and some are learning with experiences abroad too. It all feeds back into the Nazionale.”

Bonucci had famously said his ex-Juventus teammate Moise Kean was partly to blame for the abuse from Cagliari fans, as he was ‘winding them up,’ but the same Sardinian ultras insulted Romelu Lukaku.

“It’s a delicate situation, certainly. We have the technology to find those who are to blame and not let them back into the stadiums. It doesn’t just happen in Italy, we’ve seen this all over Europe and it needs to be fought.

“I cannot comment on the Inter ultras statement because I haven’t read it.”

Bonucci was asked about the controversy sparked by Emre Can’s fury at being cut from the Juventus Champions League squad.

“I am happy to be here on international duty. I don’t know what happened with Emre Can, but I want to dedicate myself to the Nazionale right now, as it’s my duty to focus entirely on this great honour.”

Juventus are in the middle of a transformative experience under new Coach Maurizio Sarri.

“There is a new mentality with the Coach that we’ve seen over the first two rounds of the season. We attacked a lot, but also didn’t allow that much in defence.

“I’ve always said that over long tournaments, the strongest defence tends to win. The most important thing is realising we start defending and attacking all together with 11 players. So while the goalkeeper starts attacking moves from the back, the striker must also help out in defence.”

ANCA Joins Kurdish American Protest for Reinstatement of HDP Mayors

A scene from the ANCA-supported protest at the Turkish Embassy in Washington, D.C. calling for the release of the unjustly jailed mayors of Amed, Mardin, and Van

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Armenian National Committee of America participated in a demonstration outside the Turkish Embassy demanding the release of the unjustly jailed mayors of Amed, Mardin, and Van – three major, Kurdish-majority municipalities that were once home to vibrant, pre-genocide Armenian populations. The protest was organized by members of the Kurdistani American Committee.

Last month, the Turkish government of Recep Erdogan replaced pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) elected leaders – Amed Co-Mayor Adnan Selçuk Mızraklı, Mardin Co-Mayor Ahmet Türk, and Van Co-Mayor Bedia Özgökçe Ertan with hand-picked state officials and also arrested more than 400 others accused of political crimes against the state. These moves are seen as part of a broader effort by Erdogan to tar the HDP as a front for the PKK, which is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union, and the United States.

People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Representative in the U.S. Giran Ozcan interviewed by Kurdistan 24 Television at the Turkish Embassy protest

“We’re committed to working with our Kurdish American allies toward a democratic, pluralist, and tolerant Turkey – one that’s capable of reckoning honestly with its past and responsibly meeting its obligations to the future,” said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian. “It’s in this spirit that we joined in protesting the removal of mayors of municipalities that were home to large pre-1915 Armenian populations that, until this day, include many Armenians whose heritage has remained hidden for much of the past century.”

According to him, a criminal case has been initiated and an international examination has been conducted on PM’s initiative.

The Head of Government added that, according to the official conclusion, the operation of the mine does not threaten the Jermuk reservoirs and Lake Sevan.

US formally pulls Turkey’s Patriot missile system offer

Panorama, Armenia

The Trump administration has formally withdrawn its offer for Turkey to purchase a Patriot missile system in retaliation for Turkey's receipt of the Russian-made S-400 missile system, CNN reported.

"We have consistently told Turkey that our latest offer of PATRIOT would be withdrawn if it took delivery of the S-400 system. Our PATRIOT offer has expired," a US State Department official tells CNN.
In December, the US State Department announced that it had approved the possible sale of a $3.5 billion Patriot missile system to Turkey.

The withdrawal of the Patriot missile defense system is just the latest US response to Turkey's acquisition of the S-400 system. The US has also ejected Turkey from the F-35 jet program, preventing Turkey from acquiring some 100 of the stealth jets and removing Turkish companies from the production chain.
President Donald Trump has blamed the Obama administration for Turkey's purchase of the S-400.

Azerbaijan has released information bait on position movements, says Armenian military’s spox

YEREVAN, AUGUST 14, ARMENPRESS. The Azerbaijani Border Service has released yet another information bait – presenting the movement of combat positions in its own territory to be exclusive achievements, Armenia’s Ministry of Defense spokesperson Artsrun Hovhannisyan said on Facebook.

“Regrettably, the Armenian information arena is immediately reacting to the information bait. I once again remind that movements of positions in the frontline are constant in nature, however unlike Azerbaijan the Armenian side doesn’t usually give public resonance to them because in carrying out combat service shifts our goal  isn’t to necessarily or unnecessarily advertize any action, but to maintain tactical advantage over the adversary and keep it under control. Nevertheless, if the Azerbaijani side continues in this manner they will have surprises waiting for them with displays of tactical-strategic advantages achieved as a result of the professional actions by the Armenian Armed Forces. The military know their job very well and I ask not to disturb them from carrying out their mission,” Hovhannisyan said.

Detained ex-Armenian president criticises government policy

[Armenian News note: the below is translated from Russian]

Imprisoned ex-Armenian President Robert Kocharyan has criticised the current government, especially Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, over the handling of his trial and their overall "incompetence" in an interview with the Russian-language Golos Armenii weekly published on 30 July.

Kocharyan, who was president of Armenia from 1998 to 2008, has been charged with acting unlawfully by introducing a state of emergency in March 2008, following a disputed election. At least ten people were killed in clashes between police and protesters.

'Incompetent' government

"Can we fight off the challenges standing against the country just by relying on populism and slogans? It is obvious that we cannot. We need to make super-efforts, be super-organised and be super-competent to overcome the challenges…There are no signs that the ruling power understands adequately the complexity of the challenges standing in front of the country," Kocharyan was quoted as saying in the interview.

While detailing the challenges the country is facing, Kocharyan said: "We are pressed between four countries. Our relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan did not work out well, to put it mildly. Iran is on the blacklist of the United States [and is] under the pressure of sanctions. Georgia is actively leading towards the geopolitical alliance, which is conflicting with the one that Armenia has joined [Eurasian Economic Commission]…We have a small and ageing population with a worsening demographical situation, which deprives Armenia of the effect of the large-scale economy…We lack rich natural resources, which would make us attractive for the major extra-regional corporations. Our territory is small, and is easily bypassed thanks to modern communication methods…the diaspora's role in Armenia's financial progress is declining…plus, there are problems with the Karabakh settlement process," Kocharyan said.

Finding fault with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's foreign policy, Kocharyan said that Pashinyan "is trying to imitate honesty, which however is not always successful. This is the reason of political duplicity [between Russia and the West], blurred geopolitical orienteering and constant faults, which have led to inferior relations with partners. It is impossible to do something you do not believe in," Kocharyan said.

Kocharyan's arrest

Commenting on his detention, Kocharyan said that "the painstaking efforts" of the incumbent authorities to isolate him "based on completely far-fetched accusations" have raised many questions. "If this is just an obsessive vendetta, then society should be worried about the mental profile of the prime minister".

Answering a question about the "comedy" played out in the country's justice system, Kocharyan termed the developments "a shame" which will be remembered in the country's history for years as measures to publicly deprive the accused of all rights during the "trial" session. "Lawlessness continues in the country, and they bring different pretexts to not allow me to appeal the illegal verdict about my arrest. The prosecutor's office of the country has become a political inquisition. It is difficult to imagine that such lawlessness is possible anywhere else," Kocharyan said.

According to the ex-president, he is "compiling his opposition activities and legal defence" in prison, however he sees "the bright side as well".

"The incumbent government are hysterical, it has taken off its mask of a fighter against injustice, showing everyone that its slogans and values have nothing to do with reality. This is critically important for the part of society able to think; the government has lost their support," Kocharyan added.

Karabakh elections

Answering a question about the upcoming presidential poll in Nagorno-Karabakh scheduled for 2020, Kocharyan offered hope that the revolution that took place in Armenia "would not be exported to Karabakh, despite the tireless efforts of the Armenian authorities".

"Usually, a snap election is the reflection of internal political conflicts, which do not exist in Karabakh," Kocharyan said, urging the people of Karabakh "to stand firm and reject any efforts of destructive interference".

Armenia not ready to make unilateral concessions in Karabakh settlement

ARKA, Armenia
July 3 2019

YEREVAN, July 3. /ARKA/. Armenia is not ready to make unilateral concessions in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anna Naghdalyan said at a press briefing today, adding that unilateral concessions on part of the Armenian side are ruled out

She said steps should be made to create an atmosphere conducive to the formation of peace, including reduction of risks, investigation of incidents along the line of contact and increase of mutual trust.

According to her, creation of an atmosphere conducive to the formation of peace is a priority for Armenia, since it is impossible to achieve efficiency in the negotiation process if there is tension on the line of contact. She reiterated that Armenia is not ready to make unilateral concessions in the name of peace, which may threaten Nagorno-Karabakh’s right to self-determination and security.

She also added hat so far no new meetings are planned with the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs on the Karabakh settlement.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict erupted into armed clashes after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s as the predominantly Armenian-populated enclave of Azerbaijan sought to secede from Azerbaijan and declared its independence backed by a successful referendum.  On May 12, 1994, the Bishkek cease-fire agreement put an end to the military operations.

A truce was brokered by Russia in 1994, although no permanent peace agreement has been signed. Since then, Nagorno-Karabakh and several adjacent regions have been under the control of Armenian forces of Karabakh. Nagorno-Karabakh is the longest-running post-Soviet era conflict and has continued to simmer despite the relative peace of the past two decades, with snipers causing tens of deaths a year.

On April 2, 2016, Azerbaijan launched military assaults along the entire perimeter of its contact line with Nagorno-Karabakh. Four days later a cease-fire was reached. -0—
