Azerbaijani Press: Why EU Parliament indifferent to death of Armenian journalist?

AzerNews, Azerbaijan
Jan 29 2019

By  Trend

Silence of the European Parliament and other international organizations on the death of Mher Yeghiazaryan, an Armenian journalist and politician, is an example of double standards, Bakhtiyar Sadikhov, Azerbaijani MP, told Trend.

Being the head of an online media outlet and deputy chairman of the “Armenian Eagles: United Armenia” party, Mher Yeghiazaryan was considered both a journalist and a politician. While in the “Nubarashen” correctional facility in Yerevan, he went on a hunger strike.

“The European Parliament has so far not made any statement on Armenia, about why this journalist was detained. Until now, the European Parliament has never made a statement as to why the leader of an opposition political party was arrested,” added Sadikhov.

According to him, the only reason for this silence and indifference emanating from the European Parliament is double standards.

The deputy noted that in the case of Mehman Huseynov, who was detained by a court decision, did not go on a hunger strike and did not experience any problems with the conditions of detention, the European Parliament was, for some reason, very concerned, and made biased statements about Azerbaijan.

"Look at the conditions which they held the journalist in, the leading face of a political party in Armenia. Despite him going on a hunger strike, no one attached any importance to this, and intentionally created conditions for him to die in prison. Why does the European Parliament keep quiet? This shows that double standards still prevail in international organizations," Sadikhov added.

The MP believes that it is necessary to condemn this action of the European Parliament, to forward an appeal in light of this.

"I even think that it is necessary to hold discussions on this issue during the plenary session of the Milli Majlis on February 1, and to send a letter to the European Parliament about when they will stop applying double standards," Sadikhov said.

Music: Tigran brings Armenian jazz genius to Oxford’s SJE Arts

Oxford Mail, UK
Jan 24 2019

A master of jazz piano, Tigran Hamasyan is loved around the world for his flights of musical fancy and blending of styles. But the Armenian composer and musician admits his career could have ended up very differently indeed, as his first ambition was to be a heavy metal guitarist.

“I was born and raised in a town which was, at the time, part of the Soviet Union,” he recalls.

“As a toddler I was exposed to a lot of classic hard rock bands that my father listened to. He was really passionate about rock and would pay a fortune for a number of records that were smuggled into Soviet Armenia.

“He would pay his entire month’s salary to get the new Led Zeppelin album and there is this story that he was once taken in by the KGB because he played a Black Sabbath song at a party!”

Metal’s loss was jazz’s gain, however. Under the guidance of his funk and soul-loving uncle, and with the help of a piano at his grandparents’ home, he was initiated in the magic of James Brown, Al Jarreau and Curtis Mayfield as well as jazz stars like Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Chick Corea.

Tigran recalls: “I remember being so into Herbie that I even transcribed Chameleon.

“As a child, I would also pick up songs by Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath and try to imitate them on the piano – I loved improvising around what I was listening to.

“At the age of 11, I had an incredible jazz teacher named Vahagn Hayrapetyan, who finally taught me how to improvise within structure, through teaching me bebop.”

Tomorrow Tigran returns to Oxford for a show at St John the Evangelist in Iffley Road. The gig will see him performing favourites from his surprisingly lengthy repertoire (given that he is still only 30) along with tunes from 2017’s An Ancient Observer – in which he reflects on his return to Armenia after more than a decade of living in the United States.

Tigran left his hometown of Gyumri and moved to Los Angeles as a teenager, acquiring his own piano – an upright Yamaha – at the age of 16. There he developed his unique style of Armenian-accented jazz.

He has released eight studio albums and fans include jazz legends Brad Mehldau, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock.

“The category of my music is called Armenian independent soulful punk jazz,” he says. “With a bit of classical and thrash metal spice!”

And what inspires him? “Human beings.” he says.

Tigran has been back in independent Armenia for five years and is one of its greatest cultural ambassadors. His journey inspired latest album An Ancient Observer – on which he reflects on his return to Armenia after more than a decade of living in America. the album will form the basis for tomorrow’s concert.

“Armenia is Eden on earth,” he waxes. “It’s a mountainous country with rich nature from high altitude desert-like places to lush green mountainous regions.

“It is full of ancient and new culture. It’s a place where, up until industrialisation, every single bit of daily life was accompanied by music. It’s the place where people first embraced Christianity – it’s the state religion.

“It is also a country where there are water fountains everywhere for people to drink spring water; a place where numerous poets, musicians and architects created masterpieces that are still standing and are part of our daily life; a place where monasteries were built on unreachable mountain tops and where a poor person will invite a stranger in and offer all he has.

“It’s the place where Noah’s ark landed.”

So is he proud to be putting the country on the musical map?

“I am not putting Armenia on the musical map,” he answers. “It’s the country that’s putting me on the map.”

And that map covers the world. The pianist admits he loves touring and has plenty of stories of life on the road.

So, are there any amusing tales he might care to share? “Well, there are a lot of them,” he says.

“I am the type of person that always spills or drops something. I frequently injure myself accidentally. Really dumb stuff happens to me all the time.

“My band members call it ‘having a Tigran moment’.

“The worst one I can remember now is the occasion that I was so into the moment during one concert with my trio, that I hit my head on the edge of the piano. I started getting light-headed and this giant bump appeared on my head during the song.”

He goes on: “I try to explore on tour too, but the concert the most important thing; that is the reason I travel. I always have to make sure I don’t get too tired and explore too much.

“Unfortunately, I have not yet had a chance to really explore Oxford. I am looking forward to it though.”

So what little luxuries does he bring with him to make life on the road a little smoother? “Dark chocolate, a computer, some books and my phone – so I can record new ideas and compositions,” he says.

“And every once in a while, some Armenian brandy!”

So does he still daydream about becoming a hard rocker?

“I would love to play the guitar, but I still have so much to figure out on the piano,” he says.

“I love certain metal bands – not just any metal band though.

“I love the that sound; I love metal, but it’s unlikely you’ll get a metal record from me – although I have made several records that have metal influences.”

First, on February 28, The Godfather will be screened at the Downtown Dubai destination. Watch the Sicilian mafia rise to power and fall from grace, as the orchestra plays Nino Rota's Oscar-nominated score.

The Academy Award-winning film – which many movie fans claim is the best film ever made – features Marlon Brando, as Don Vito Corleone, patriarch of the Italian-American mafia family, alongside Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall.

Harry Potter and Dobby the house elf in a scene from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Then, on March 1-2, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – the second installment of JK Rowling's beloved tales – will be screened, as John Williams's memorable songs are performed live.

In this story, Harry Potter meets the house elf Dobby and the giant talking spider Aragog, as well as flies a car with pal Ron Weasley and comes face to face with a younger Voldemort.

In December 2017, Potterheads were treated to a screening of the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, in high-definition on a 40-foot screen while listening to the Czech National Symphony Orchestra perform.

Farah Andrews, a Dubai resident who attended the first screening, said: "For a Harry Potter fan, it was a very nostalgic screening, in a very impressive environment.

"The music is such an important, atmospheric part of the series of films, but can be taken for granted a little in a small-screen viewing. It’s nice being able to sit back and really focus on different parts of the film that I thought I knew so well.

"It was absolutely magical."

Tickets are currently on exclusive pre-sale, offering limited-time discounts of 20 per cent to du subscribers.

For the general public, tickets go on sale tomorrow (January 17) at noon. Prices start from Dh175 and there will also be a 20 per cent early bird offer available on the top two seating categories until January 31.

Political analyst: 2019 will be the year of formation of the political field in Armenia

Arminfo, Armenia
Jan 11 2019
Ani Mshetsyan

ArmInfo. It is not a secret for anyone that the past year was very important for political life in Armenia, a change of political elite occurred in the country.  Director of the Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandaryan said this at  a press conference on January 11.

He noted that the entire structure of the government has changed,  that is, the prime minister, the government, and the parliament.  After the change of power, society appears as serious hopes, and in  the country there are serious challenges. "Of course, a very  important fact is that the change of power took place without  violence and the letter of the law was observed, that is, there was  no violent seizure of power.  Also very important is the fact that  the new government intends to preserve all the main vectors of the  country's foreign policy. It was noted more than once that relations  with Russia, the EU, Iran, Georgia and the United States of America  are very important for Armenia, "the political scientist said.

However, according to the expert, after the revolution, as it usually  happens, serious challenges appeared in the country. "Many say that  there is no opposition in the new parliament, but the problem in this  case is much wider. The political force that is at the helm of the  state does not have a developed system of power.  Today, in a  parliamentary republic, such a republic is Armenia There is no  developed party system. With an undeveloped party system, it is  impossible to talk about the development of a parliamentary system of  government. The party "Civil Contract" is not yet a strong party with  a large number of human and political resources; it is a party that  has yet to take place. Moreover, political forces may soon begin to  have problems, since it is necessary to work out certain programs and  implement practical policies. It is impossible to enjoy the current  level of legitimacy solely by imertia ", Iskandaryan noted.

He stressed that the year 2019 will be the year of the formation of  the political field in Armenia. "Many speak about strengthening  democracy in Armenia, however, democracy is not only an election, but  it's also developed political institutions. Of course, today there is  rather strong support in the society for the new government; however,  it's more personal support. Most of the people of Armenia support  Nikol Pashinyan, not representatives of his team. The fact is that  many members of the newly elected parliament are novices in politics,  and among them there are a lot of inexperienced personnel who have  yet to get stronger, " the political scientist concluded.
