ighty protesters were detained Tuesday during a rally in the Armenian capital Yerevan against former President Serzh Sargsyan becoming prime minister, while an opposition leader of the protest claimed to launch a nationwide "velvet revolution."

"I proclaim today the start of a peaceful velvet revolution in Armenia," opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan told a rally in Yerevan, calling on supporters to "paralyze the work of all government agencies," as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Protesters blockaded the entrances to government buildings housing the foreign ministry and the central bank, among others, and rallies were also held in the provincial towns of Gyumri and Vanadzor. The protesters vandalized government property, including deflating the tires of official vehicles, state media reported. Authorities earlier said that only several protesters were detained.

The opposition says the new parliamentary system of government will allow Sargsyan to maintain a huge influence and extend his time in power. Sargsyan left the presidency this year upon reaching his term limit. Opposition members have decried changes to the constitution that will increase the incoming prime minister's powers.

"I am standing here today as a leader of the party which can ensure a harmonious cooperation between the executive and legislative branches of power," he told lawmakers ahead of the vote.

The ruling Republican party nominated Sargsyan, who served as president for a decade from 2008, as its candidate for prime minister on Saturday.

Sargsyan's ally Armen Sarkissian, a former prime minister and ambassador to Britain, was sworn in as president last week after being elected by parliament in a vote that was meant to herald the start of a power shift to the premier and parliament.

Under the terms of an amended constitution approved in 2015 by a referendum, the presidency will become largely ceremonial.

The Dashnaktsutyun Party, the Republicans' coalition ally, also backs Sargsyan's candidacy, meaning he should easily secure the simple majority needed for election. No other candidates are running. Sargsyan had denied any intention of becoming premier until March, when he said his appointment would allow him to share the benefit of his experience as president.

Armenia, a country of 3 million people in the Southern Caucasus, seceded in 1991 from the then Soviet Union but still relies on Russia for aid and investment. Many Armenians accuse the government of corruption and mismanaging the economy.

Music: Grand Concert of La Francophonie in Geneva in honor of Armenia

Public Radio of Armenia
10:05, 21 Mar 2018

On March 13, a Grand Concert took place in the Assembly Hall of the Palace of Nations, the headquarters of the United Nations Office at Geneva, honouring Armenia – the host country of the 17th Summit of La Francophonie.

The concert, which was organized with the joint efforts of the permanent missions of La Francophonie and the Republic of Armenia to the United Nations Office at Geneva on the occasion of the International Francophonie Day, has been held with the exceptional participation of Charles Aznavour. Tigran Hamasyan, world-famous jazz pianist, André Manoukian, French Armenian songwriter and pianist, Armelle Khourdoian, French Armenian opera singer, and Toumanian Mek quartet also performed at the concert.

Mr. Michael Møller, Director General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, Mr. Dominique de Buman, President of the National Council of the Swiss Confederation, Ambassador Henri Monceau, Permanent Representative of La Francophonie to the UN Office at Geneva, and Mrs. Hasmik Tolmajyan, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia to the UN Office at Geneva, delivered welcoming speeches.

In his opening remarks Mr. Michael Møller, Director General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, specifically welcomed this important initiative of the permanent missions of La Francophonie and Armenia.

Mr. Dominique de Buman, the President of the National Council of the Swiss Confederation, quoting the lyrics from Charles Aznavour’s song “Take me to the wonderland”, noted in particular that “Aznavour’s songs relate to everyone without exception, and each of us has their own wonderland. The wonderland for Charles Aznavour is Armenia, which we welcomed in the francophone family.” Armenia is a country, continued Mr. de Buman, “where you step in once and then keep it in your heart forever.”

Hasmik Tolmajyan, Deputy Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN Office at Geneva, expressed in welcoming remarks her gratitude to the International Organization of La Francophonie for dedicating the grand event of La Francophonie to Armenia. She also pointed out that the decision adopted at the Antananarivo summit on holding the 17th Summit of La Francophonie in Yerevan was the reflection of the acknowledgement by member-states of La Francophonie of Armenia’s commitment to the Organization and its values. Deputy Permanent Representative underlined that the promotion of francophonie in the Armenian society was greatly influenced by the Armenian-French centuries-old friendship, as well as warm relations established with the francophone countries, in particular, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Lebanon, Egypt, Greece and Cyprus. It was further noted that La Francophonie is also an important platform for Armenia to strengthen the cooperation with those countries with which there are no traditionally developed close relationships. At the same time, Mrs. Tolmajyan underlined that Armenia, in its turn, also contributes to the promotion of La Francophonie in a region where the Organization has not been sufficiently represented. In this regard, it was recalled that Yerevan summit will be the second meeting of the Organization’s supreme body to be convened in the Eastern European region.

Mr. Henri Monceau, Permanent Representative of La Francophonie to the UN Office at Geneva, when speaking about the role of La Francophonie in the UN, noted that La Francophonie unites 84 countries on 5 continents, 54 of which are full-fledged member states. From the very beginning, creation of La Francophonie pursued the goal of establishing a platform for multilateral relations, the basis of which would be the French language and francophone cultural diversity.

Henri Monceau also spoke about the strategic importance of the presence of La Francophonie in Geneva, noting that the UN Office at Geneva is the only structure located in a francophone environment. The representative of La Francophonie also highlighted the mutual collaboration between the Francophonie and the UN Geneva Office in a number of programmes and initiatives.

The evening provided an opportunity for holding the first award ceremony by the Group of Francophone Ambassadors. Mr. Henri Monseau noted that “the prize was aimed at rewarding a person or an institution which, through its activities in 2017, had contributed to the promotion of francophone values in Geneva, namely, those of democracy, the rule of law, multilingualism and cultural diversity.” The first prize of Francophone Ambassadors was awarded to Mr. Michael Møller, Director General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, and Mr. Zeid Ra’ad Al-Hussein, High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The concert was attended by about 2000 guests, high-ranking representatives of the United Nations, Swiss federal and local authorities, numerous ambassadors, as well as representatives of the Swiss Armenian community.

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the Geneva City Municipality, as well as Boghossian, Philossian and Philippossian, Izmirlian Foundations, the AGBU-Switzerland Committee and other non-governmental organizations have contributed to the organization of the evening.

President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan met today with Armen Sarkissian, who had been offered by the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) to become the ruling party’s candidate for the President of Armenia. During the previous meeting with Serzh Sargsyan, Armen Sarkissina had asked for some time to be able to hold meetings with different political forces, the leadership of Artsakh, business and science representatives and the public sector.

As ARMENPRESS was informed from the press service of the Armenian President’s Office, Armen Sarkissian noted that the planned meetings are over based on which he has made a decision. Armen Sarkissina presented the reasons behind his decision in the meeting with President Serzh Sargsyan.

“Honorable Mr. Sarkissian,

A month ago I offered you on behalf of the Republican Party of Armenia to become the candidate of the new President of Armenia. You promised to seriously ponder over that. During this month you have had numerous meetings with both parliamentary and extra-parliamentary political forces, NGOs, intellectuals and you also visited Artsakh. Of course, I attentively followed your meetings through media. They were also very attentive towards you and were extremely inspective towards any of your step, analyzed what you said and your biography”, President Serzh Sargsyan said, noting that there were both sober and ridiculous comments. “You displayed tolerance, patience and readiness for dialogue. These features are of key importance in life in general and just necessity for a head of state. Now I think It’s time for you to give an answer”, Sargsyan said.

Armen Sarkissian first thanked President Serzh Sargsyan and the Republican party of Armenia for the confidence towards him and great expectations from him, noting that he well understands that the position of the President of the Republic is not only very honorable, but also contains great responsibility.

“This is the reason why I asked you to give me time to ponder and hold meetings”, Sarkissina said. Speaking about his visit to Artsakh, Armen Sarkissian said that Artsakh is not only our pride and inseparable part of our people and history, but also the national dignity of Armenians. “If I am elected the President of the Republic, I will try to contribute to the foreign policy of Armenia, economic issues, attracting investments, but what I assess very important is the strengthening of national unity and Armenia-Diaspora relations”, Armen Sarkissian said, adding that he attaches great importance to education and stressed that the future President of Armenia should support and encourage that sphere.

“Mr. President, I want to emphasize that as regards to the issues raised by you I am convinced that I will be able to carry out the high responsibilities with honor”, Armen Sarkissian said, adding that he is ready to spare no efforts and vigor to fulfill that very responsible mission, if elected by the National Assembly.

The President of the Republic hoped that by giving start to the procedures provided for by the Constitution, brilliant results will be recorded.

RETREAT LAUNCHES INSPIRING CONVERSATION ON ARMENIAN SPIRITUALITY

AGBU WELCOMES NEW INITIATIVE INSPIRED BY THE AGBU FOCUS CONFERENCE 2017

Over 30 young professionals from across the United States gathered in New York
from February 3 to 4 for a thought-provoking retreat on the Armenian faith and
spirituality. The topic, along with issues related to human rights and women’s
empowerment, was raised by participants of the inaugural AGBU FOCUS conference
last summer as an area of interest.

“One of the takeaways from this past summer’s international conference was that
we could leverage the AGBU network to continue thought-provoking conversations.
This urban retreat aimed to create a safe environment for young professionals
to learn more about Armenian spirituality through our history, culture music
and traditions and facilitate our generation's spiritual journey.” said
mezzo-soprano Solange Merdinian who convened the retreat together with Michelle
Nahabedian and journalist Lara Setrakian.

The retreat explored the Armenian faith from various perspectives, ranging from
monastic educational traditions and heritage to personal journeys and Christian
meditation. Moderated by Setrakian, the retreat featured Father Daniel
Findikyan, director of the Krikor and Clara Zohrab Center; Eric Vozzy, a deacon
at St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral; Dr. Roberta Ervine, professor of Armenian
Studies at St. Nerses Armenian Seminary, and Father Mersrop Parsamyan, the
director of ministries at the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of
America.

Father Findikyan identified one of the challenges for the continuation of
Armenian religious education in the diaspora, exploring the decline of Armenian
monasteries in the Ottoman Empire and how it affected the modern-day Armenian
theological instruction. “The Armenian monasteries were the theological
engines of the Armenian church. They were the intellectual engines of the
Armenian people,” said Findikyan stressing that monasteries provided a network
of religious scholars who kept a dialogue with the communities and maintained
the continuity of traditions. Intrigued by Findikyan’s speech, attendees posed
important questions on youth involvement, church modernization and creationism.

The retreat also served as an open forum for personal sharing and created an
opportunity for attendees to explore otherwise new topics. Dr. Roberta Ervine
notably spoke about six noble women from the historical Armenian Kingdom of
Syunik who channeled their faith into action and supported the construction of
several monasteries, some of which became jewels of Armenian architecture.
Participants were treated to a short meditation session with Fr. Parsamyan, who
presented the basic techniques of Christian meditation and offered his insight
on the topic.

“The forum provided participants an opportunity to share their spiritual
journeys and make suggestions on ways of bringing the Armenian church closer to
youth,” said Merdinian. “It is the beginning of continued opportunities for
such discussion and contemplation.”

Established in 1906, AGBU (www.agbu.org) is the world's largest non-profit
Armenian organization. Headquartered in New York City, AGBU preserves and
promotes the Armenian identity and heritage through educational, cultural and
humanitarian programs, annually touching the lives of some 500,000 Armenians
around the world.
