Our Rush to War in Syria

It’s a disaster in the making

by Justin Raimondo

Posted on June 21, 2017

The downing of a Syrian fighter jet by the United States – and, more recently, of an Iranian drone – augurs a confrontation that could take us down the road to World War III. The US media is echoing the Pentagon’s explanation, which is that the Syrian jet bombed (or was threatening to bomb) units of the US-supported Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) around the town of Tanf. The Syrians say they were attacking forces aligned with ISIS, which both the US and the Syrian government are supposedly fighting.

The reality is that there is no such entity as the “Syrian Democratic Forces.” There are only loosely aligned groups, factions and splinters of factions, which proliferate seemingly on a daily basis in a mosaic of ethno-religious-ideological conflicts that reflect the chaos that has enveloped that country. The failure of the US to unite these various factions into the so-called Free Syrian Army – large units of which kept defecting to the various radical Islamist groups, including ISIS and al-Qaeda – led to an explosion of smaller groups centered around local, tribal, ethnic, and religious affiliations. The SDF is an attempt to solder these groups together in a military force capable of fighting and defeating the “Caliphate” established by ISIS – an effort that is far less successful than it seems.

The main military component of the SDF is the People’s Protection Units(Yekîneyên Parastina Gel/YPG), consisting of about 45,000 fighters, including the all-female unit. The YPG is the armed wing of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, a far-leftist formation which adheres to the “democratic confederalist” vision of Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) founder Abdullah Ocalan, who in turn credits anarcho-communist theoretician Murray Bookchin as his inspiration. The YPG is the official army of “Rojava,” a non-contiguous union of Kurdish-controlled territories that is supposedly secular, egalitarian, and socialist. However, the alleged ideals of this ostensibly leftist configuration haven’t always translated into practice: the YPG regularly enforces conscription on areas under its control, seizing property and persecuting Assyrian and Armenian Christians, and engaging in ethnic cleansing of Arab villages. The YPG is viewed by Arabs as a separatist movement, while the Arabs oppose any effort to divide Syria along ethnic lines. As a result, there is considerable hostility between the Arab fighters, organizing in tribal and regional outfits, and the Kurds, despite American efforts to unify these groups into a grand anti-ISIS coalition.

Another source of internecine conflict is the YPG’s relationship with the Syrian government and its allies: while Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad has persecuted the Kurds in the past, he has also supported them at various times against their Turkish enemies, and Syrian government forces have voluntarily withdrawn from YPG-controlled areas in order to concentrate their fire on the Islamist fundamentalists who were threatening Damascus.

Operating under the rubric of the SDF are several Islamist groups formerly affiliated with ISIS, al-Qaeda, and other jihadist outfits. Jabhat Thuwar al-Raqqa (Front of Raqqa Revolutionaries) is one of the founding groups of the SDF: they were formerly allied with Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian affiliate of al-Qaeda, but supposedly split away when Nusra moved closer to ISIS. However, the ideology, aims, and tactics of the group have not changed: its “split” with al-Nusra was over tactical and control issues. The “Raqqa Revolutionaries” are still fighting to establish an Islamic state in Syria under Sharia law, with their main goal being the destruction of the Syrian government in Damascus: they have simply changed their strategy, which is now to ally with the American-sponsored coalition.

The US air strikes in southern Syria, near the town of Tanf, which hit a Syrian fighter jet, were in defense of three American-backed groups: Jaysh Maghawir al-Thawra, a jihadist group trained by the US and the Jordanians, the "Ahmad Abdo Martyrs," another jihadist group with murky origins and financing, and the “Lions of the East Army,” formerly a part of the “Authenticity and Development Front,” a Saudi-funded alliance of groups that included the Nour al-Din al-Zenki grouplet responsible for the beheading of a young Palestinian boy. They have also fought alongside al-Nusra: see here for their links to al-Qaeda as well as Turkey.

The Syrian government rightly considers these groups in the same category as al-Nusra, al-Qaeda, and ISIS, and seeks to eliminate them wherever they exist. Thus we see that the conflicting claims coming out of Damascus and Washington – with the former saying they are attacking “terrorists,” while the latter insists it will defend its “allies” – are not really in conflict, because the US is indeed actively supporting terrorists in Syria.

In short, these groups – which the US military is defending against the Syrian army – are the “radical Islamic terrorists” that President Trump continually rails against. So why are we aiding and protecting them?

Looking at the ultimate defeat of ISIS as a foregone conclusion, all the regional powers with proxy forces in Syria are seeking to dominate the country once the Caliphate is consigned to history’s dustbin. The Syrian government, along with their Russian and Iranian allies, look to the restoration of control by Damascus over the entire territory of Syria. The Saudis look to their jihadist outfits to establish an Islamic state after Assad is deposed. The Qataris are backing their own jihadists, notably al-Nusra, and the Turks have their proxies among the Islamist groups in the northern part of the country, as well as the Turkmen militias, which they hope will block the Kurds from establishing a Kurdish state on the Syrian-Turkish border.

Stuck in the midst of this four-sided civil war is the United States, with no real policy, and with its military strategy ceded to commanders on the ground – who are pursuing the same course set by the previous administration, i.e. canoodling with radical Islamists bent on regime change in Damascus. In alliance with the Saudis, the British, the Israelis, and the Jordanians, Washington is seemingly still determined to oust Assad and establish a Sunni regime in Damascus.

The real goal of this strategy – which seems entirely contradictory to Trump’s campaign pledges to stay out of Syria, and cut off aid to Islamist rebel groups – is a looming confrontation with Iran. Trump has always been vehemently anti-Iranian, and his recent trip to Saudi Arabia reinforced his headlong rush into a collision course with Tehran. There is currently a debategoing on within the administration over how far to take this: for the moment, the radical anti-Iranian faction seems to have lost out. Yet the ultimate outcome of the fight remains to be seen – because with Donald J. Trump in the drivers’ seat, you never know what will happen next.

The Russians, for their part, have declared that any and all planes flying over Syrian territory will be considered “targets” – and this underscores the seriousness of the threat we are now facing. We are a single incident away from a major conflagration that could drag in all the powers now feasting on the carcass of Syria.

And it’s all because of an American President who was elected on a pledge to stay out of Syria, stop funding radical Islamist terrorists in the region, and who often asked “Wouldn’t it be nice if we got along with Russia?”

Trump has entered the upside-down realm of Bizarro World: he’s inverted most of his foreign policy positions. Instead of détente with Russia, we are pursuing a policy of confrontation. Instead of putting America first, we are putting Saudi Arabia first. Rather than concentrate on pulling this country out of the economic doldrums, the Trump administration is rushing headlong into yet another major war in the Middle East.

While the complete reversal of Trump’s foreign policy stances as expressed on the campaign trail seems inexplicable on the surface, it is perfectly in accord with what I call the theory of libertarian realism: the view that there is no real line of demarcation between foreign and domestic policy, and that all foreign policy is the result of domestic political pressures and the desire of the group in power to retain and expand that power.

Trump is now harried by the phony “Russia-gate” scandal, which depicts him as a pawn of the Kremlin: therefore he is acting in a way that would discredit that charge, maintaining and even expanding sanctions on Russia while confronting Moscow and its allies in Syria. How could he possibly be “Putin’s puppet,” as Hillary Clinton put it, if he’s defying Russian threats to shoot down our planes?

Another factor to consider is the influence of the Israel lobby. Israel has been giving covert support to the Syrian rebels, and their spokesmen have openly preferred the Islamist rebels (including ISIS) to Assad, Israel’s historic enemy. Engaged in an increasingly open alliance with Riyadh, Tel Aviv benefits if Syria is turned into a version of Lebanon – hopelessly divided along ethno-religious lines. Both Hezbollah and Iran are siding with Assad – and if the Israelis can maneuver the US into fighting them, well then all the better.

Here is yet another crisis that has been caused and ratcheted up by our alleged “allies,” who have succeeded in getting the US to front for their interests. As for American interests, they don’t come into the equation. So much for “America first.”

Henrikh Mkhitaryan sends message to Manchester United supporters

Henrikh Mkhitaryan enjoyed an excellent first season at Man Utd under Jose Mourinho and has opened up on it in a Facebook Q&A.

Manchester United player Henrikh Mkhitaryan has thanked fans for their support during his first season at the club and revealed he loves his chant in a Facebook Q&A.

United fans sing 'Whoa, Mkhitaryan, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, he's our midfield Armenian' to the tune of Sting's 1987 single Englishman in New York.

The song has been endorsed again by Mkhitaryan, who enjoyed a successful first campaign at Old Trafford which culminated in him scoring the winning goal in the Europa League final versus Ajax in Stockholm.

The 28-year-old's amazing scorpion kick against Sunderland on Boxing Day was also voted goal of the season by supporters.

Mkhitaryan took part in a question and answer session on his Facebook page on Friday – and was asked by the M.E.N. if he had a message for United fans who had supported him over the season.

He replied: "People in Manchester and our fans have been great to me since the beginning and I am so thankful for that. It's also great when they sing my song in the stands."

Mkhitaryan generously gave up his time to connect with his followers across the world and answered a number of questions on everything from working with Jose Mourinho (he's a winner) to his favourite type of food (Italian and Armenian).

He reassured fans he was managing to take a break during the off-season and also had a positive message for a supporter, telling him: "Dreams come true when you work hard, are positive and believe in yourself."

And he told another young fan: "My tip for success is honestly to believe in yourself whatever you do and work hard. Anything is possible in life if you are confident, positive and hard working."

He also expressed a desire to open a football academy in his home country, Armenia, writing: "I’ve thought about it and would love to develop the idea in the future to teach my football philosophy to Armenian children."

Some of Mkhitaryan's best Q&A responses:

On his chant, he told a supporter: "I love it. It’s great that our fans made a song for me and it gives me a lot of motivation when I hear it in the stadium!"

On his aims for next season: "I'd love to score more goals and give more assists… and help the team win as many trophies as possible. Will give my best!

On the Champions League and facing Real Madrid in the Super Cup: "The Champions League is where Manchester United belongs and we are all happy to be playing this great competition again. For the new season we definitely want to fight for the title. For the supercup it should be a fantastic game against Real Madrid!"

On working with Mourinho: "Jose is a winner. He works so hard to win every single game and to make sure that we are all ready to give 100%. He gives us emotion, and motivation. I have learned a lot from him and will continue to do so this season."

On his favourite United goals: "The scorpion goal was most beautiful, but the winning goal in the Europa League final was the most important one."

On his highlight of the season: "Definitely lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy in Stockholm. We worked so hard to win this competition and it was truly special to be able to do it. Now we are really looking forward to be back in the UEFA Champions League."

Henrikh Mkhitaryan believes Manchester United can win the Champions League

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is targeting Champions League glory after claiming the crowning goal during Manchester United’s Europa League final win over Ajax last month.

The Armenian was an integral component of Man United’s journey to Stockholm, claiming six goals – four of which coming in the knockout phases – as Mourinho’s men cemented their place in the Champions League by claiming a 2-0 win over Ajax.

And the 28-year-old, who scored the decisive second goal in the final, is now eyeing up similar feats in next season’s Champions League.

“Lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy in Stockholm [was my favourite moment of the season],” he said.

“We worked so hard to win this competition and it was truly special to be able to do it. Now we are really looking forward to be back in the UEFA Champions League.”

“The Champions League is where Manchester United belongs and we are all happy to be playing this great competition again.

“For the new season we definitely want to fight for the title. For the Super Cup it should be a fantastic game against Real Madrid.”

To put it bluntly, United would have gotten nowhere near Stockholm without Mkhitaryan. The attacking midfielder has, on balance, had a relatively muted season – punctuated most notably by an almost three long absence from the first team.

And yet, looking back, it would be hard to say he disappointed: the Armenian has displayed an aptitude for producing moments and spells of mesmerising brilliance that can alter the entire complexion of a game. It may be something as simple as a clever turn and pass, but even that invokes a sense of slickness and urgency into United’s play that, mixed with their muscle in midfield, proved too much for continental opponents last term.

How far they will go amongst the European elite, however, remains an unknown quantity.

Rep. Schiff, Colleagues Send Letter to State Senate Urging Passage of
Bill Divesting Public Pensions from Turkish Government

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) News Release

Washington, DC - This week, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) and nine of
his Congressional colleagues from California sent a letter to
California State Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin De Leon in support
of California Assembly Bill 1597, which would divest California's
public pension funds from investment vehicles that are owned,
controlled, or managed by the Turkish government.

"California has acted in the past to prohibit new investments by its
pension funds in sectors that are inimical to our state's values, such
as the 2015 state law mandating divestment from coal companies," the
Members wrote in the letter. "The narrowly drafted AB 1597 proposal is
an appropriate use of that authority, blocking future investments
directly owned by the Turkish Government, such as government bonds."

Rep. Schiff sent the letter along with Jackie Speier (CA-14), Anna G.
Eshoo (CA-18), Zoe Lofgren (CA-19), Grace Napolitano (CA-32), Tony
Cardenas (CA-29), Brad Sherman (CA-30), Ro Khanna (CA-17), Salud
Carbajal (CA-24) and Jim Costa (CA-16).

"Given the recent assault on peaceful protestors in Washington, D.C.
by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's personal security forces,
as well as Turkey's continued denial of the Armenian Genocide,
divestment by California is an appropriate response," the Members
wrote.

AB 1597 passed the California State Assembly on June 1st by a vote of 67-0.

Full text of the letter is below:

June 19, 2017

The Honorable Kevin de Leon

California State Senate President Pro Tempore

State Capitol, Room 205

Sacramento, CA 94249

Dear Mr. President:

We write to voice our strong support for AB 1597, which would divest
California's public pension funds from investment vehicles that are
owned, controlled, or managed by the Turkish government. This
legislation passed the Assembly on June 1st by a vote of 67-0. Given
the recent assault on peaceful protestors in Washington, D.C. by
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's personal security forces, as
well as Turkey's continued denial of the Armenian Genocide, divestment
by California is an appropriate response. We hope that the State
Senate takes up and passes this legislation as soon as possible.

As you are aware, the once dynamic and relatively open Turkish
democracy has slid towards authoritarian rule by President Erdogan.
With the recent passage, beset by voting irregularities, of a
constitutional referendum, Erdogan has amassed dictatorial powers.
Turkey has become the world's leading imprisoner of journalists,
suppressed free speech, and has engaged in a brutal campaign to stamp
out political dissent.

They have recently brought that campaign to the United States. On May
16th, members of Erdogan's security detail brutally attacked a
peaceful protest outside of the Turkish Embassy, causing serious
injuries. Videos show Erdogan speaking to his security forces
immediately prior to the attack, and observing from a distance as his
armed security beat peaceful protestors. The House of Representatives
recently passed H. Res. 354 unanimously, condemning this assault and
calling on the Administration to hold Turkey responsible and take
appropriate actions against those who carried out the attack.

Finally, Turkey has engaged in a decades long campaign to deny the
Armenian Genocide, expending millions of dollars to lobby against
recognition of the historic fact of the extermination of 1.5 million
Armenians by the Ottoman Empire from 1915-1923. California has been a
leader in the United States in speaking frankly about the genocide,
serving as a home for tens of thousands of Armenian-Americans whose
families survived the genocide to build new lives in the United
States.

California has acted in the past to prohibit new investments by its
pension funds in sectors that are inimical to our state's values, such
as the 2015 state law mandating divestment from coal companies. The
narrowly drafted AB 1597 proposal is an appropriate use of that
authority, blocking future investments directly owned by the Turkish
Government, such as government bonds. The investments make up a small
portion of the pension funds' holdings, and reallocating these
resources in an orderly fashion will have no measurable impact on
their fiduciary duties.

We hope that the Senate acts quickly on AB 1597, and that it can be
signed into law as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Edinburgh heritage experts to help Turkey save historic buildings

Edinburgh heritage experts to help Turkey save historic buildings

by: Phil Miller

SCOTLAND is to export some of its heritage expertise to two ancient
Turkish cities whose historic buildings are at risk of being ravaged
by conflict.

The team of monument experts from Edinburgh World Heritage (EWH) will
use their conservation prowess built up over decades to document at
risk buildings in south-east Turkey over the next three years.

Both cities date back to Roman and Byzantine times and are dominated
by stone-built architectural masterpieces - not unlike those found in
Edinburgh's Old Town.

Perched on a rocky hill is Mardin. It is crowned by a citadel and
includes Syriac buildings brimming with Muslim heritage and Armenian
churches.

The other, Diyarbakir, has been on the World Heritage list since 2015
and lies in the area of Sur, which is bustling with ancient mosques,
churches, inns, madrasas and bazaars.

In 2015 large parts of Sur were damaged in a three-month clash between
the Turkish army and Kurdish militants.

Diyarbakir is considered the unofficial capital of the Kurdish area of
Turkey and has been centre of recent conflict between Kurds and the
Turkish army and police.

In November 2015, Tahir Elci, a prominent lawyer, spoke at the foot of
a 500-year-old monument in Diyarbakir that had been damaged by armed
clashes, and made a plea for the protection of the city's unique
cultural heritage.

During the speech he was assassinated - shot as he spoke at the Four
Legged Minaret of the Sheikh Mata Mosque.

Professor Eva Sarlak, of the Turkish cultural body, the Külturel
Mirasi Koruma Dernegi (KMKD) said the cities are home to a "diverse
cultural heritage that has suffered as a result of recent conflict and
political uncertainty".

"Many historic buildings and neighbourhoods, much loved by the local
community, are in a very poor state of repair, and risk being lost,"
she said.

"This project is a first for Turkey."

Hollywood film The Monuments Men depicted rescues of art treasures
during wartime but in this real initiative, backed by a £1.2million
pot from the British Council's new Cultural Protection Fund, the
Edinburgh team will work to inform local stonemasons and architects
about preservation techniques while creating a comprehensive Building
at Risk Register.

Adam Wilkinson, director of EWH, said the project was not about
imposing Western methods on Turks, but sharing ideas and collaborating
with local groups on the best methods to aid the two cities' heritage.
He said he hoped it would the beginning of a long relationship between
the Turkish cities and Edinburgh.

Mr Wilkinson added: "Helping to protect cultural heritage at risk is
important not only in Edinburgh, but also in the world's conflict
zones.

"In both Mardin and Diyarbakir, the historic buildings and archaeology
are a daily reminder of the richness and diversity of the region's
culture, and must be preserved for current and future generations."
