European Parliament urges Azerbaijan to immediately release Afgan Mukhtarli

18:53, 15.06.2017

The European Parliament adopted resolution on Thursday calling upon Azerbaijan authorities to immediately release and drop all charges against Afgan Mukhtarli, an investigative journalist exiled in Georgia, from where he was abducted on May 29 and brought to Azerbaijan. He now faces prosecution and possibly a prison sentence of several years “following bogus charges”, say MEPs.

Azerbaijani authorities should end the selective criminal prosecution and imprisonment of journalists and human rights defenders, immediately release all political prisoners, and ensure compliance with fair trial norms, MEPs stress in a resolution.

Parliament also urges the Georgian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into Mukhtarli’s disappearance and to clarify “beyond any doubt all suspicion regarding the involvement of Georgian state agents”.

Expert: Azeris actively propagate about their ancestors due to connivance of Armenians

Expert: Azeris actively propagate about their ancestors due to connivance of Armenians

23:57, 15.06.2017

YEREVAN. – All the feats performed by our great Armeniologists due to the political situation eventually turn against the Armenian studies and Armenians.

Head of the Tigranakert archaeological expedition, Hamlet Petrosyan, stated the aforementioned at a press-conference on Friday, referring to the history of the emergence of Aghvan Kingdom, Aghvan church and speculations of the Azerbaijani side on this topic.

He added that it is due to the connivance of the Armenian scientists that the Azeris currently propagate the idea that the Aghvans (Caucasian Albanians) were the ancestors of the Azeris.

In this context, he pointed out to two examples. In particular, in his early works, Hovsep Orbeli writes that Artsakh is an indigently Armenian land. In 1935, being already the director of Hermitage, he claims—under the pressure of the Soviet propaganda—that Aghvans lived in the territory of Artsakh, the Armenians being foreigners there, who thus assimilated with the Aghvans. “Now the Azeris use that against us,” he noted.

According to Hamlet Petrosyan, the second classic example is Asatur Mnatsakanyan, who in the 60s claimed that there was no Aghvani writing system and literature.

But we know that Mesrop Mashtots created the Aghvani alphabet. “Armenians were in good neighborly relations with Aghvanis: they taught them, gave them a writing system and disseminated Christianity. But stemming from certain unclear Armeniological ideas, all these data were considered as a hopeless case, until Aghvani manuscripts were accidentally discovered in the Church of St. Catherine in the 90s. Now the entire world knows that the Aghvani writing system did exist. The Georgians have currently become famous specialists of Aghvani studies. In fact, the Georgian scientists are studying the Aghvani sources, which are kept at our Matenadaran [Institute of Ancient Manuscripts], while there is no specialist of Afghani language in Armenia,” the scientist noted.

Responding to the question of journalists as to who Aghvanis in reality were and what cultural heritage they left, Petrosyan noted that there was no such single ethnicity as Aghvanis: There was a kingdom, where different tribes lived. But there was also a writing system, which Mesrop Mashtots created for one of those tribes.

According to the scientist, the historical research shows that part of the Aghvanis have assimilated with Georgians, while the other part—with Armenians. Udins are the direct successors of the Aghvanis.

Social: Outraged widow’s battle over dead Kerkorian billionaire’s big bucks: Where’s my $600 million?

A widow’s battle for $600 million from the estate of billionaire Kirk Kerkorian hit a temporary legal roadblock Tuesday with a ruling by a Los Angeles judge.

The jurist is managing probate proceedings regarding Kerkorian’s estate, and she put a hold on litigation involving the bid by the business mogul’s widow for an approximate $600 million share of the late billionaire’s assets. Kerkorian died two years ago at the age of 98.

The judge ruled that one of the petitioner’s appeals in the case should be decided first.

Superior Court Judge Maria Stratton said her decision on Una Davis’ petition for a stay has no affect on the ability of a committee picked by the billionaire’s estate to make $200 million in charitable donations to continue with those distributions in the interim.

Kerkorian died in June 2015 at age 98 from age-related causes. His estate has been estimated to be worth $1.8 billion.

Davis is seeking a one-third interest in Kerkorian’s estate, saying she was pressured by those close to him into signing a waiver to any interest she had when the two married in 2014. Kerkorian was married three times previously.

Davis maintains she is an “omitted spouse” who is entitled to the same amount of money she would have received had Kerkorian died without a will. She has appealed various prior rulings in the case, including one in March by Stratton that allowed the Kerkorian estate’s executor, Anthony Mandekic, to oppose her omitted spouse petition.

Davis’ lawyers maintained that without the stay, Mandekic could have participated in the pretrial and trial proceedings in the Davis petition before the appeals court could decide whether his involvement was proper.

Lawyers for the Kerkorian estate maintained Davis’ motion for a stay was another attempt by her lawyers for a delay in the case.

Documents filed by Kerkorian’s attorneys when his estate was opened included a copy of his will, written in July 2013. Kerkorian designated that $15 million be given to Patricia Mary Christensen, the wife of longtime Kerkorian attorney Terry Christensen, and $7 million to Anthony Mandekic, secretary-treasurer of Kerkorian’s Beverly Hills-based Tracinda Corp.

He left $6 million to another of his attorneys, Patricia Glaser.

Medicine: SoCal doctors embark on medical mission to heal in Armenia

ABC 7, Los Angeles

Every year, local doctors, dentists and nurses journey to Armenia to help those in critical need of care.

Wednesday, 06:18PM

Every year, local doctors, dentists and nurses journey to Armenia to help those in critical need of care. This is the ninth trip, but this year's mission will take on new meaning.

Every piece of equipment is needed. When Dr. Albert Phillips and his wife Susan set up their makeshift medical clinic in the Lori Province of Armenia, throngs of patients will be waiting for them.

"To this day, the area is still suffering economically in a lot of ways," said Dr. Phillips, an OB-GYN. A 1988 earthquake killed 25,000 people in the area.

The couple, working with the Armenian Missionary Association of America, started going on these overseas trips in 2008.

Thirty-seven other Armenian-American doctors, dentists, nurses and other caregivers will travel with enough medicine to supply patients for up to a year.

"You look into the faces and they could be your mother, grandmother, child and you can relate to them that way," Susan said.

"We have helped people with certain conditions that doctors in Armenia couldn't diagnose," Dr. Phillips said.

And this year for the first time, doctors are going to be treating Armenian refugees from Syria. The refugees have been on the run and probably haven't seen a doctor for a long time.

"In the four-and-a-half days which we are working, we will see close to 1,000 patients," Dr. Phillips said.

Pews in a church turn into exam areas. Sunday school classrooms become fully operable laboratories.

Many in Armenia live a harsh life, but Dr. Phillips said his group provides benefits beyond medical care. "We try to give them hope, not just for today, but forever," he said.

This mission is so inspiring that people are waiting in line to go next year.

"If you have a love for people and love to serve and use your talents then you need to come," Susan said. "You will never be the same. It changes your life in a radical way."

BAKU: NATO reaffirms support for OSCE MG efforts in Karabakh talks

Trend, Azerbaijan
11:07 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, June 15

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

NATO continues to encourage both Armenia and Azerbaijan to work towards a peaceful resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, a NATO official told Trend June 15.

The official was commenting on the recent visit of James Appathurai, NATO secretary general’s special representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia, to Armenia, where he made several statements regarding the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“NATO fully supports the [OSCE] Minsk Group’s efforts to that end,” the NATO official said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

“Appathurai’s recent visit to Armenia was aimed at taking stock of NATO-Armenia cooperation, on the basis of an Individual Partnership Action Plan (also referred to as IPAP) signed by NATO and Armenia,” noted the official. “This IPAP focuses on areas such as interoperability and defense reform.”

BAKU: Russian, French FMs may discuss Karabakh issue in Moscow

AzerNews, Azerbaijan

By Rashid Shirinov

Moscow does not exclude the discussion of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict during the meeting of Russian and French Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Jean-Yves Le Drian on June 20 in Moscow.

“We do not exclude the raising of this issue during the discussion of a number of international problems. We are in dialogue with our French colleagues, including on this issue,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on June 15.

She noted that the essence of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is in finding a compromise of seeming diametrically opposed positions.

“The situation requires progress and resolution, therefore contacts in different formats have lately intensified,” Zakharova said.

The spokeswoman added that Russia, as a mediator, is doing everything so that a compromise would be found, but not to the detriment of the peoples of the two countries.

The conflict between two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding regions. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia still controls fifth part of Azerbaijan's territory and rejects implementing four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding districts.
