Evgeny Kissin vows to visit Armenia as long as he’s alive

World-famous pianist Evgeny Kissin promised at a meeting with president Serzh Sargsyan on Thursday, December 28 to keep visiting Armenia as long as he is alive.

Sargsyan said that the Armenian people greatly appreciate Kissin’s talent and mastery and his excellent performance.

Noting that Armenians will never forget the pianist’s support during the devastating earthquake of 1988, the president thanked him for his concert in New York City, dedicated to the centennial of the Armenian Genocide.

Late Egyptian-Armenian cartoonist's works to go on display in Cairo

An exhibition of late Egyptian-Armenian cartoonist Alexander Saroukhan’s works titled “Echoes of Past Visions” will open at Al Masar Gallery in Zamalek, Cairo on January 10, 2018 through February 19, 2018, Egypt Today says.

This is the second edition in a series of exhibitions on Saroukhan’s legacy. The previous was called “Political Comedy”, which showcased dozens of examples of the artist’s work done between 1930 and 1970.

“Echoes of Past Visions” will collect 35 original drawings of the artist that primarily relate to Egypt’s internal and foreign policies, along with comments on world events from nearly 50 years ago that are still relevant today, such as the Jerusalem conflict.

Born on October 1, 1898 in an Armenian town under the Russian Empire, Saroukhan is considered to be one of Egypt’s first cartoonists, helping to pioneer the art form as a type of important political commentary within the region. He moved with his family to Turkey’s capital of Istanbul in 1909, Saroukhan created a small newspaper with his brother – his first foray into his future career.

Upon going to study at the College of the Mekhitarists with his brother, the Armenian Genocide in 1915 forced them to stay after graduating. After his parents died, the only thing left was his art. Saroukhan focused on drawing until the end of the war, where he worked as a translator for the British Army until 1921.

He then went on to study art in Vienna, before moving to Egypt in 1924, after he already had over 100 completed artworks published.

His cartoons described the political atmosphere leading up to Egypt’s eventual independence in 1953 and were harshly critical of colonial rule.

Jose Mourinho believes substitutesJesse LingardandHenrikh Mkhitaryanbrought 'dynamism' to helpManchester Unitedearn a Boxing Day draw with Burnley.

United were 2-0 down at home to The Clarets at half-time and Mourinho decided to introduce Mkhitaryan and Lingard for Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, effectively switching to a three-man defence which included only one centre half inPhil Jones.

Lingard scored both goals having been accused of 'childish' finishing in Saturday's Leicester draw, while Mkhitaryan has not started a United game since November 5 and Mourinho is believed to be open to selling the Armenian in the January transfer window.

United's dropped points tally rose to 15 from the last five with their 2-2 draw on Tuesday but Mourinho was pleased with the impact of the substitutes and the 'risk' his players took in an attempt to salvage the game.

"We should have won, yes," Mourinho told the BBC. "I take satisfaction by the way the team played, by the way the team reacted, to try to recover from 2-0 down.

Jose Mourinho has to make the hardest decision of his Manchester United career

"The boys fought against the 2-0 at half-time, so nothing at all negative to say about my players. I praise their spirit, their reaction, the way they accept all the risks we took in the second half.

"For us to score two goals we need to play in their half for 45 minutes, with only one defender. The end product of so much dominance, two goals, is a miserable number.

"Lingard come in and helped the team, Lingard and Mkhitaryan gave us a good dynamic. All the boys accepted the risk to only play with Jones. All the boys accepted the risk that we took, at least the point is not a defeat and is the minimum the boys deserve for such spirit."

Sports: Mkhitaryan’s sister fuels Man Utd exit talk with deleted tweet

The Armenian has been linked with a return to Borussia Dortmund amid dwindling game time in England, and his family appear to support that proposal

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s sister has fuelled transfer talk suggesting that the midfielder could leave Manchester United for Borussia Dortmund.

The Armenia international departed the Bundesliga giants in 2016 when the Red Devils put a big-money deal in place to take him to England.

Mkhitaryan has endured a testing time at Old Trafford, with Jose Mourinho displaying an initial reluctance to utilise his talent.

Dwindling game time with United has not prevented Mkhitaryan from being named Armenia’s footballer of the year once again, but it has sparked transfer talk – with a return to Dortmund being mooted.

Acknowledging the support of his fellow countrymen after landing another prestigious personal award, the comment section of Mkhitaryan’s social media post was soon flooded by Dortmund supporters.

Those eager to see him back at the Westfalendstadion posted "thousands of yellow hearts" to a former fan favourite.

Mkhitaryan’s sister, Monika, was quick to acknowledge the tribute, with it suggested that she was opening the door to a possible reunion.

Her tweet has since been deleted, further fanning the flames regarding a possible switch during the January transfer window.

It now remains to be seen whether Dortmund will make a move – seeking either a loan deal or permanent transfer – with the club’s chief executive, Hans-Joachim Watzke, having previously claimed that it would take a “great deal of imagination” to put an agreement in place.

Turkey Buys 4 Russian S-400 Systems, Partially Financed by Russian Loans

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Turkey purchased four Russian S-400 air defense systems worth $2.5 billion with 55 percent of the sum under the contract being covered by Russian loans, CEO of Russia’s Rostec Corporation Sergey Chemezov told the Kommersant newspaper in an interview issued on Wednesday.

He confirmed that Ankara had bought four S-400 systems. “Yes, [they bought four S-400 systems] worth $2.5 billion,” Chemezov said.

He also pointed out that the Russian and Turkish Finance Ministries had already completed talks on Moscow’s loans for Ankara.

“They should finalize financial papers now. I can say, they [Turkey] will pay 45 percent of the whole some in advance, 55 percent [of the sum] is being funded by Russian loans. We are going to start deliveries in March 2020,” Chemezov added.

Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the documents Russian S-400 had been signed and that Ankara wanted to take steps to implement the agreement as soon as possible.

Istanbul Patriarchate Slams False Statements by Ateshian

Archbishop Aram Ateshian

ISTANBUL—The Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul issued an official statement slamming remarks made by the Patriarchate’s former Vicar General, Archbishop Aram Ateshian, who during a recent visit to Yerevan claimed that official Ankara did not recognize the elected Patriarchal deputy—locum tenens—Archbishop Karekin Bekdjian.

Ateshian, who has close ties to the Turkish government and has been going out of his way to ensure that he will become the next Istanbul Patriarch, has been engaged in a smear campaign to derail the upcoming elections of a new church leader in Istanbul.

In its statement, the Istanbul Patriarchate said that Ateshian’s remarks prove that he continues his efforts to distort the truth even outside of Turkey and warned the archbishop of further muddying the waters.

After a tumultuous start earlier this year, the Patriarchate’s religious council finally held elections last spring and chose Archbishop Bekdjian as the locum tenens. Dismayed from the results, Ateshian stormed out of the meeting, only to return minutes later to produce a letter by the Istanbul Governor’s Office, which deemed the entire Patriarchal election process as illegitimate, calling into question the validity of the locum tenens elections.

In response to Ateshian’s latest outbursts, the Patriarchate said that he is obliged to respect the result of the election and to avoid making internal church affairs into public distpute.

“According to the decision passed in the assembly, which he [Ateshian] personally attended, he is bound to step down as General Vicar. On the contrary, he refused to resign, a step which has put us in a precarious situation,” said the Patriarchate’s statement.

“His conduct forces the Church Assembly, which had installed him in this post, to dismiss him, something which is an extremely upsetting fact. In addition, the state hasn’t issued any statement signaling that it doesn’t recognize the elected locum tenens,” added the statements.

“Our desire is that the Archbishop stops looking for faults and avoids clashes,” said the statement.

Officials in Istanbul have continued their intervention into the Patriarchal elections by not responding to official requests from the church body and ignoring deadlines. Ateshian’s public statements and private machinations have also added disrupted the process.

President Sargsyan to continue leading ruling party – Sharmazanov on future tenure

Vice Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov, who also serves as spokesman of the ruling Republican Party, commented on a question on where President Sargsyan will continue his acitivites after his term in office ends in 2018.

Sharmazanov told a press conference that the ruling coalition hasn’t yet discussed this matter.

“We will discuss and answer. Mr. President has clearly and directly answered all questions in his recent interview. He spoke about all challenges of Armenia, he said what will happen in 2018. And what will happen? HHK together with the ARF will continue to lead until 2022. In terms of who will work where, the ruling party and the ARF will discuss and say”, he said.

“Among current politicians, I don’t know any other than President Sargsyan who will be able to more effectively carry out the work of resisting foreign and security challenges and giving right solutions”, he said when asked whether or not he would like to see the incumbent president as PM, adding that wanting something isn’t a political category.

At the same time, he disagreed with the opinion that there are no irreplaceable people.

He also added that it is an honor for every member of the ruling party to be a representative of a political party the commander of which is Serzh Sargsyan.

Sharmazanov said Serzh Sargsyan will continue leading the ruling party.
