Asbarez: Theater Review: Satamian Group Mounts Lackluster ‘Liar’ at New Manoukian Arts Center

From l to r: Aram Muradian, Artur Margaryan, and Peter Nishan in “The Liar”

BY ARAM KOUYOUMDJIAN

The long-awaited Raffi and Tamar Manoukian Performing Arts Center, the stylish new venue with state-of-the-art amenities, is finally ready for use, and the AGBU Satamian Theatre Group’s latest production opened there the first weekend in November.

What theatrical work had the troupe staged for the occasion? A newly-commissioned piece? A world premiere by an up-and-coming playwright? An innovative take on an Armenian classic?

If you thought, even for a second, that the answer to any of those questions could be “yes,” then you are not familiar with the Satamian Group, a throwback ensemble devoted to comedies that are equal parts stale and mind-numbing.

Satamian Group’s selection was “Sdakhosuh” (The Liar), an 18th-century farce by Carlo Goldoni, which, according to press materials, launched AGBU’s Vahram Papazian Theatre Group in Beirut back in 1959, the Ardashad Theatre Group in New York in 1978, as well as the Ardavazt Theatre Group (as the current Satamian Group was originally called) in 1981. Why this Italian trifle has been integral to launching not one, not two, but three AGBU theater groups is not for me to explain. Suffice it to say that it has been retrieved from some age-old vault and dusted off for another round of service.

“The Liar” is built around the commedia dell’arte tradition of stock characters (such as greedy/foolish old men or devious servants). At the play’s center is Lelio, the son of a wealthy merchant, who arrives in Venice with little money and checks into a hotel (on credit) across from one Dr. Balanzoni’s house. One of the doctor’s daughters, Rosoura, is being wooed by a secret admirer named Florindo, who sends her gifts and poems – that is, until Lelio, representing himself to be a marquis, claims to be the source behind the serenades and tries to gain Rosoura’s favor instead. The situation quickly grows complicated, ensnaring Rosoura’s sister, maid, their various suitors, and Lelio’s manservant, Arlecchino (or Harlequin), and requiring Lelio to tell an ever-escalating series of lies – which he euphemistically describes as “new discoveries” – to keep his head above water.

Given the times in which we live, where “alternative facts” are offered in the place of truth, “The Liar” could have been a devastating satire on present-day events, but the production can’t be bothered with current relevance and makes no effort in that regard. Instead, with its outmoded patriarchal themes – depicting women as marriageable commodities – it proves altogether tone-deaf to the zeitgeist.

The production isn’t entirely devoid of humor – just for the most part. It is partly weighed down by the fact that a third of the cast is comprised of neophytes inexperienced with comic timing and delivery, while another third is comprised of Satamian veterans relying on their usual shtick. Only a trio of actors rises above the material: Aram Muradian, who overcomes a tentative start to offer a nimble and engaging take on Lelio in the second act; Peter Nishan, whose impressive turn as Arlecchino is a kinetic romp of physical contortions and high-jinx; and Artur Margaryan who manages to steal scenes while playing a statue – yes, a statue – which comes to life at opportune moments to impart loaded commentary by way of a single word or gesture.

Bookended by random dances, the production looks out of place in the sleek Manoukian space. There’s no lighting design to speak of, and the set looks amateurish on the elegant stage. Without question, the company will have to considerably up its game to deserve its new home.

Aram Kouyoumdjian is the winner of Elly Awards for both playwriting (“The Farewells”) and directing (“Three Hotels”). His most recent work was the world premiere production of “William Saroyan: The Unpublished Plays in Performance” this fall.

The State Revenue Committee (SRC) of Armenia says it has revealed fraud at Gazprom Armenia.

SRC said it has inspected Gazprom Armenia as part of ongoing anti-fraud operations of the agency and discovered a number of violations and major tax evasion cases.

SRC said that in 2016 and 2017 Gazprom Armenia has reported fake data in its VAT and profit tax calculations to taxation authorities which resulted in ‘several billions drams less calculated tax obligations’.

The State Revenue Committee said that the research data on the volumes of supplied natural gas to filling stations (natural gas stations) also prove fraud. SRC said that Gazprom Armenia’s volume of loss in the distribution network reduced on an average of more than 3 times in June-July 2018 compared to January-May of the same year. At the same time, according to the SRC, the volumes of Gazprom Armenia’s supplies to the filling stations in June-September 2018 has increased nearly 37% as compared to the first five months of the year.

The SRC said it has launched a criminal investigation on major tax evasion based on the findings.

Of course, we know that your agenda is too busy, but this meeting is also a necessity in order to discuss with you key issues concerning our church, national life and also to get solutions to the issues concerning our church. Of course, we know that the country faces many challenges, and the important events are ahead, the parliamentary elections. Our wish and desire are for these elections to be held peacefully, in an atmosphere of solidarity, without undesirable incidents, contribute to raising the kind reputation of our people and country, and for the election results to contribute to the country’s progress. Once again accept our best wishes to you and welcome to the Holy Etchmiadzin”, His Holiness Garegin II said at the meeting.

Of course, the values of the Armenian Apostolic Church have a key significance for identity for us, our people and our country. This perception has always guided us and will continue doing so. You mentioned in your remarks the peaceful holding of the upcoming elections. It’s interesting that there is such a perception in Armenia: elections and peace terms have started to be perceived as antonyms for some reasons known to us, but I want to assure you that otherwise cannot happen, and the elections in Armenia will be definitely held peacefully. In general, it’s time for us not to notice contradictions in the elections and peace terms. This will be constant: our people will make a decision, and what decision they will make, it will become a political reality. This is one of the main meanings of the recent changes in Armenia”, Pashinyan said. “The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin has a special significance in the life of our people, each follower of the Armenian Apostolic Church, including in my life and that of my family. It’s also the most convenient place to think about the past and the future”.

Major tax fraud revealed in Gazprom Armenia

Panorama, Armenia
Nov 15 2018

The State Revenue Committee (SRC) of Armenia has revealed a major tax evasion scam in Gazprom Armenia – a subsidiary of Russian gas giant Gazprom – as part of its ongoing anti-fraud and anti-shadow operations.

The inspections have found that Gazprom Armenia presented fake figures in the value-added tax (VAT) and income tax reports to tax authorities in 2016 and 2017, due to which the company’s tax duties were reported several billion drams lower.

The comparative analysis on the volumes of supplied natural gas to self-service gas stations also testify to the fraud allegations, the SRC said in a statement.

According to the committee, Gazprom Armenia’s volume of loss in the distribution network reduced by an average of over 3 times from June to July 2018 compared to January-May of the same year. Meantime, the research data shows that the company’s gas supply volumes to the filling stations rose sharply by 37% in June-September from the first five months of 2018.

A criminal case has been launched under Article 205 (Part 2) of Armenia’s Criminal Code – evasion from taxes, duties or other mandatory payments.

Investigative and procedural operations are being carried out to clarify the damages caused to the state and reveal corruption cases in natural gas consumption.

YEREVAN – The Armenian State Revenue Committee announced on Nov. 14 it has discovered major financial irregularities in the operations of Gazprom Armenia, a subsidiary of Russia’s gas giant Gazprom.

Inspections carried out at the company revealed that it submitted inaccurate income tax and VAT returns in 2016 and 2017, “paying several billion drams less than its tax obligations to the national budget [amounted to],” it said.

The State Revenue Committee opened a criminal case on charges of evasion of taxes, duties, or other mandatory payments.

Special procedures have been launched to determine the amount of damage caused to the state and look for signs of corruption in the consumption of natural gas, it said.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said earlier that he could not rule out that corruption risks might be involved in the scheme by which Russian gas is supplied to Armenian consumers. He said Russian President Vladimir Putin and he had agreed to study the pricing system for natural gas shipped to Armenia.
