"The world is still learning about what still we Armenians have to offer. We are proud people, very proud and two of Armenian national treasures – Chess and Brandy. That is why we called our brandy "Shakmat" which means chess in Armenian. For us, shakmat is more than game. A Tribute to Charles Aznavour, an Armenian Icon Who Sang in French

If you want to know any group with a long history and strong sense of self, you could do worse than to immerse yourself in its culture.

If you want to unearth the mysteries of any nation, people or civilization, you merely need to expose yourself to its culture, for culture is the key to any human society, representing the culmination of a people’s desires, ambitions, lifestyles and relationships.

Cultures that persevere in the face of ethnic cleansing and forced displacement are, by definition, more resilient than the borders of the country or region that gave birth to them.

As a Lebanese of Armenian descent, I consider myself one of the luckiest souls on this planet, for I have the chance to identify with not only one but two resilient cultures.

I’m proud to live in the country that gave birth to Fayrouz and honored to be a descendant of Sayat-Nova (Georgian-born Armenian poet) and Komitas (Armenian priest and musicologist). I consider my culture to be both a weapon and a treasure. I felt a small part of me died when I heard that Charles Aznavour an icon of Armenian and French music had passed away.

Referring to Aznavour as an icon is an understatement in terms of both his career and his life philosophy, but sometimes words can’t convey everything.

Aznavour gave so much that for a time his generosity was taken for granted. His kindness had no limits. Whenever people needed a leader, he was there. Whenever they needed a savior he was on the front line.

When an earthquake struck Armenia in 1988, he quickly got on a plane to help ease his people’s misery. In 1989 he partnered with French musicians to record “Pour Toi Armenie,” which exposed the world to the aftermath of the earthquake. He was also responsible for attracting a lot of foreign aid which helped save thousands of lives. He was always a step ahead of the game.

“Who is going to take care of his people and nation after he is gone, who is going to fund the schools?” he asked in one of his last interviews. “Who is going to represent Armenia on the international scale? Who will be our voice in a world where the small and weak have no place?”

Aznavour’s passing reminds us of that saying, that you only know the value of something when it’s lost. Who will defend the Armenian people’s cause before the international community?

As an advocate for the memory of the Armenian genocide, Aznavour risked his career, fame and fortune. In the face of apathy and criticism, he raised awareness about ongoing injustice. For this, he will always have a special place in the hearts of Armenians.

At the end of the day, what I know is that I’m only a 21-year-old student trying to show his respect to one of the greatest Armenians who have walked on the face of this earth. Just like me, not just the entire Armenian diaspora and the Armenian Republic but also that of France went to enormous lengths to pay tribute to the deceased icon. Paris organized a spectacular ceremony, where many honorable musicians and President Emmanuel Macron were present.

The ceremonial march was also broadcast on national television and the Republic Square of Armenia was lit with thousands of candles where “Emmenez-moi” and “La Boheme” were played for tens of thousands until morning light.

As a part of this huge “Aznavourian” community it is now our turn, not only as the Armenian community of Lebanon, but Lebanon as a whole to pay homage to our hero on Nov. 15-16, because I am truly confident that just like us, the Lebanese people have always had huge respect for this great artist, who occupied a special place in their hearts.

We are truly aware that no matter how grand our efforts, they will be nothing compared to what this man has done for us. I would like to end with his own song lyrics: “Take me to the edge of the world, take me to the city of miracles.”

I hope that the divine powers granted this icon his wish, for he deserves nothing less.

Armenian village joins settlements using energy-saving technologies

PanArmenian, Armenia
Nov 14 2018

PanARMENIAN.Net – In mid-summer, construction work was been launched in the village of Arpi in Armenia's Vayots Dzor province and is set to be completed by the end of the year. As a result, Arpi will join the list of settlements using energy-saving technologies.

Residents, looking forward to the launch of the state-of-the-art energy-efficient LED system, highlight the importance of the solution of street lighting issue from several points of view: the difference of development between the capital and their village will be partially reduced, the flow of people and security during evening hours will increase, the financial burden of the village will be relieved.

“There are problem the solution of which systematizes many issues. Outdoor lighting is one of them. A farmer dealing with farming and cattle-breeding goes to haying in the evening hours to avoid the heat. Yet, during those hours security issues emerge: wild animals enter the village in the evening hours. The issue of street lighting of the village is an urgent problem that must be solved,” said the head of the administrative territory of the village Gagik Hovsepyan.

VivaCell-MTS and the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) are collaborating organizations that have made the development of infrastructures of rural communities an important program direction and contribute to the provision of outdoor lighting in Arpi village. Residents are sure that the solution of this problem will enable coordination of other important issues concerning, for example, first medical aid: evening visits to the patients’ houses will no longer be difficult.

“Usually diseases become aggravated during evening hours, and for providing necessary injections or medical assistance, we have to reach the patient’s home through dark streets. The absence of lighting complicates everything: not everyone has a car in the village; sometimes no one accompanies us to the patient’s home. Outdoor lighting is a necessity,” said family nurse Nektar Martirosyan.

With the efforts of collaborating structures, the post-soviet situation will remain in the past. The attitude of the villagers towards public property and their confidence in not being neglected will change. The program of installing energy-sufficient technologies will give an opportunity to relieve the financial burden of the village and will contribute to the preservation of clean and sustainable environment.

New South Wales MP declares solidarity with Armenian-Australians

PanArmenian, Armenia
Nov 14 2018

PanARMENIAN.Net – The Vice-Chair of the New South Wales Parliamentary Friends of Armenia, Walt Secord MLC rose in the Legislative Council of Australia's largest state and declared his continuing solidarity with the Armenian-Australian community, reported the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU).

Secord, who is the son of a Mohawk-Ojibway First Nation man from Canada, has taken a keen interest in Armenian issues since the very beginning of his political career in Australia. His pioneering visits to Armenia, Western Armenia, Artsakh and Javakhk solidified his support for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the rights to self-determination for the Armenians in the Republic of Artsakh.

In his speech on Tuesday, November 13, Secord said: "As deputy chair of the parliamentary friends, my personal relationship with the Armenian community has also deepened. I have also visited Armenia on two occasions, Artsakh, Javakhk, the Gulbenkian in Portugal, Western Armenia including Kars, Van, Ani, Masis and Pokr Masis."

"To my deep pleasure every time I visit a community—whether it is in Singapore, Lisbon, Gyumri, Lake Sevan, Tbilisi, Stepanakert or Sydney's north—I discover a new aspect of the Armenian story. Since getting to know the Armenian community, I find myself seeking out all things Armenian. Most recently, it was the films of Atom Egoyan, Ararat and Noy Armenian brandies, Vasily Grossman's An Armenian Sketchbook, the music and ballet of Aram Khachaturian, and Sydney soprano Natalie Aroyan, whom I have seen perform in many Opera Australia productions. I now take a deep interest in the Armenian entry in Eurovision."

ANC-AU Executive Director, Haig Kayserian thanked Secord, who is the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the NSW Legislative Council and the Shadow Minister for Health, the Arts, and the North Coast.

"Our community has long recognised that Mr. Secord embodies morality in politics," Kayserian said. "Mr. Secord visited Artsakh and faced the ire of the petro-dictatorship of Azerbaijan for supporting the rights to self-determination of the Armenians of the Republic of Artsakh. He has always argued for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and maintains his exemplary moral compass on issues that impact other survivor communities around the world."

Kayserian added: "We thank Mr. Secord for his speech and look forward to continuing our community's relationship with him."

YEREVAN. – It is yet unknown as to how the electoral list of the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) will be for the upcoming snap parliamentary election, Iravunk (Right) newspaper reported.

“According to our information, the PAP leader [and oligarch MP Gagik Tsarukyan] is going to seriously review the politicians around him, especially the women.

“Tsarukyan essentially fears that he will no longer be the second political force in parliament, whereas more organized MPs are needed to have a more modest representation [at the National Assembly].

“The fiery fight [at the PAP] is not mitigating, and each and everyone is concerned about his [or her] political future,” Iravunk wrote.
