YEREVAN, November 13. /ARKA/. The Republican Party of Armenia will fail as opposition, just as it failed as ruling party, Tigran Avinyan, acting deputy prime minister of Armenia, told journalists on Tuesday.

Commenting on the Armenian Republicans’ statement that their party intends to become a constructive opposition, he said that the party has already shown “its merits” while ruling the country.

Avinyan said he sees no difference between the Republican Party of Armenia and other political forces.

He also told journalists that he will race in the early parliamentary elections on the rating system in the second electoral constituency.

All the members of our team will be race on the rating system as well.

Avinyan said he sees no any serious rival to the My Step bloc – (its list is topped by Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan).

In his words, there are various persons in the list and there are many who enjoy respect in the society.

They are political and public activists as well as specialists in various areas.

On April 23, Serzh Sargsyan resigned as prime minister after one month and one week in office amid widespread disaffection for him and his party.

On May 8, Nikol Pashinyan was elected as prime minister.

However, to dismiss the parliament Nikol Pashinyan had to resign and the parliament had to fail to elect him two times. Pashinyan resigned on October 16.

The National Assembly failed to elect him two times and after that the parliament was dismissed and the snap parliamentary elections were scheduled for December 9. -0—

Reddit and Initialized Capital co-founder Alexis Ohanian has announced the launch of new brand of Armenian brandy, Shakmat.

According to Ohanian, the first batch will contain 2400 bottles and be sold EUR 100 per bottle. A part of profits will be allocated to Armenia Tree Project, which has planted over 5.5 million trees all over Armenia.

“Shakmat 23 Year Old is a premium brandy originating from the birthplace of winemaking. It is an embodiment of Armenia’s two national treasures – Chess and brandy. The time has come for Armenian brandy to reclaim its rightful place on the World Spirits map,” emphasized Ohanian.

He visited Armenia with a team to find the right flavors for the new brandy.

“Shakmat (or shakhmat) is the Armenian word for chess. But our Shakmat is so much more than a game. It is a symbol; a symbol of life, persistence, patience, and wisdom of a people that do not fall, even when held in check,” concluded Ohanian.

Armenian Church commemorates St. Martyr Demetrios, Priest St. Basilikos

The Armenian Apostolic Church commemorates on 13 November St. Martyr Demetrios and the Priest St. Basilikos, the Araratian Patriarchal Diocese's official website reports.

St. Demetrios (Demetrius) was born in Persia. He has lived during the period of reign of the King Kostandianos the Great. Believing in Christ, he has lived a secluded life in the Monastery on Nisibis, Mesopotamia and then moved to the Monastery of Theodosopolis, where he has been ordained as a deacon. Not agreeing with the Archimandrite, who wished to ordain him as a priest and considering himself undeserving of priesthood, Demetrios has gone to live in a cave near the river Euphrates.

When the King Julianos the Betrayer and his army go to fight against the Persians and pass by the cave where the saint lived and where many people had gathered waiting to be healed, the king orders to block the entrance to the cave with large stones. The saint and his two disciples are martyred in the cave. Later the martyrs’ relics are brought out of the cave and buried.

Priest Basilikos (Basil) has been martyred in 362 AD, by the order of the King Julianos the Betrayer. Basilikos blames the King for renouncing Christ. The king orders to cut daily seven pieces from the martyr’s skin. After lasting severe treatments the saint’s body is swabbed by heated metal sticks.

Armenia acting Premier: North-South road does not meet qualitative standards Armenia acting Premier: North-South road does not meet qualitative standards

16:58, 13.11.2018

YEREVAN. – We have a problem connected with the quality of the surface of the North-South road. We reliably know that the road that was constructed doesn’t meet qualitative standards, especially in terms of the quality of the cement and the concrete.

Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Tuesday said the abovementioned at the National Assembly, during the debates on the 2019 State Budget draft of Armenia.

He noted that an expertise study was being conducted to determine how to continue the construction of this road corridor in the country.

“The North-South definitely shall be built,” the acting PM added. “And the quality is under the accountability of the state itself.”

And commenting on the construction of the highway that will become an alternative for Armenia to the Upper Lars highway between Georgia and Russia, Pashinyan said this was an important matter, but Armenia was not a negotiating party in that process, and the negotiating parties were Georgia, Russia, and a Swiss company which acts as a mediator.

“In contacts with our Russian, Georgian and Swiss colleagues, we [Armenia] constantly raise that matter,” the acting PM noted. “But we are not a negotiating party.”

Armenian servicemen’s salaries not to be raise, but rewards implied instead – Tonoyan

ARKA, Armenia
Nov 13 2018

YEREVAN, November 13. /ARKA/. Armenian Acting Defense Minister David Tonoyan, speaking Monday at a news conference, said that despite the 26.6 percent growth of the ministry’s budget, salaries will not be raised.

Instead, the ministry intends to pay rewards to frontline servicemen thanks to efficient spending of the budget funds, he said.

“If the economy develops properly, tax inflow intensifies and the budget grows, it will become possible to speak about increase in salaries,” Tonoyan said.

In his words, 1,400 apartments will be allocated to officers in service and retired servicemen from the ministry’s housing fund.

The process is under way now, he said, and 120 servicemen have already received apartments.

The acting defense minister also said that another decision implies preferential mortgage lending terms not only for young for servicemen, but also for those having significant service records. –0–

HHK and Civil Contract Party definitely won’t form coalition, argues Yelk faction MP

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS. Yelk faction MP Hrachya Hakobyan rules out any coalition between HHK (Republicans) and Civil Contract Party.

“First of all the HHK should appear in parliament, and then only form a coalition,” he told reporters today.

“The Republican Party definitely will not form a coalition with Civil Contract. I think the party [HHK] won’t even enter parliament,” he said.

He argues that attempting to garner the vote of the people by manipulating the name of Nikol Pashinyan is yet another manipulation of the HHK.

He said that the HHK has already started campaigning in order to mislead the people.

“They won’t even vote for themselves in the voting booth, they’ll vote for the Im Kayl [My Step] alliance,” Hakobyan said.

The Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) will run for parliament in the upcoming early election of parliament.

Today the HHK elected ex-defense minister Vigen Sargsyan (HHK) to serve as First Vice President of the party.

Speaking to reporters today after a HHK Council session, Sargsyan (no relation to President Serzh Sargsyan) said that he will lead the proportional list of the party for the December 9 polls.

“The list will be comprised of both our party friends and candidates representing other parties or independent candidates. Anyone included in the list will also be in the [district] list,” Sargsyan said.

Sargsyan refused to disclose other names in the list and said that it will be published November 14.

He said that HHK President Serzh Sargsyan, the former President of Armenia, and ex-PM Karen Karapetyan, won’t participate in the election.

“We are going through a very interesting process: it is a transformation of status after being [government],” he told reporters, adding that the HHK, in its new status, as an opposition force, is seeking ways to use its knowledge and experience for the country’s progress.

Vigen Sargsyan said that the HHK Council today discussed ‘a very important’ document, which stipulates the Republican Party’s approaches for all processes taking place in the country, the results of the incumbent government’s activities and the problems which the party sees in terms of policy and ideological approaches.

Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan resigned on October 16 to trigger the process of disbanding the parliament.

Pashinyan took office after massive protests in April forced president-turned PM Serzh Sargsyan to resign. But Sargsyan’s Republican Party (HHK) still has most seats in the 105-seat parliament. Since taking office, Nikol Pashinyan has numerously said that the incumbent parliament doesn’t represent the people and that early elections should take place as soon as possible.

In accordance to the Constitution, when a Prime Minister resigns the parliament must elect a new PM within two weeks. Lawmakers deliberately failed to elect a new PM as a formality in order to pave the way for dissolution.

The last round took place on November 1 and the parliament was dissolved by virtue of law.

Later on the same day, President Armen Sarkissian signed an order on dissolving the parliament and calling early elections on December 9.

The parliament will function until the new parliament is elected.

The government is formally a caretaker government until a new government is formed after the election.

The Republican Party (HHK) district list in the upcoming election of parliament will include young figures, devotees of the party, as well as people who believe they enjoy the confidence of the residents of a given district, HHK Vice President, MP Armen Ashotyan told reporters today in parliament.

He argues that the presence of the HHK in the next parliament is needed for the country’s political system.
