More than half of the people surveyed believe that Armenia needs the mining industry when fulfilling certain conditions

DATELINE: Yerevan,November 07.ArmInfo, Emmanuel Mkrtchyan. More than half of the respondents surveyed believe that Armenia needs to develop the mining sector of the economy when fulfilling certain conditions of its operation. These are the findings of a survey conducted by the Gallup public opinion research institute in cooperation with the Marketing Association of Armenia on the example of the Amulsari mining project. According to the study, one of the topics of which was the attitude of the Armenian public to the implementation of the project for the operation of the Amulsarsky zalotonosnogo field and the suspension of mine construction due to protest actions of environmental activists, 28% of respondents said that the field cannot be exploited, 26.5% thought that the project should be implemented and bring benefits to local communities, 18.9% considered that the mine should be exploited, but with active monitoring by the public and 5

2% – that the Amulsar deposit should kspluatirovatsya from Armenian, not foreign companies. Thus, from the point of view of environmental risks, which, according to the project management, were completely neutralized through technology and the implementation of a number of preventive expensive environmental programs, more than 45% of respondents considered the operation of the Amulsar project to be quite acceptable provided some of these or other conditions were observed (technology, control and .d.)

Commenting at the request of ArmInfo, the results of the poll, project manager Hayk Aloyan noted that they consider them to be fully justified and correspond to the real picture of the public perception of the Amulsar project, in which risk management was originally built into an unquestionable imperative. "Over the years of project preparation, we have been confronted with a purposeful, specifically funded campaign against the implementation of our project. In Armenia, there is no other business project, so much money would have been invested in the misinformation and denigration of which, despite the years of information war against us and the mountains of black PR, the result of the survey shows that the population of the country, of course, under certain conditions , for example hard social and state monitoring, not against its implementation. Many understand that the suspension of the construction of the mine is the result of unprovoked actions of certain forces that deliberately disorient the public and manipulate public opinion, "said Hayk Aloyan. He noted that the public is well aware that the mining industry is an integral part of the industrial complex of Armenia and it should function on the availability of modern, neutralizing possible damage, technologies and continuous public monitoring, that is, the whole set of measures that, in principle, lay at the very core of the Amulsar project.

Recall that the Amulsar project is being implemented by Lydian Armenia, which is a subsidiary of the British Lydian International, whose shareholders are major international institutional investors from the United States, Great Britain, and a number of European countries, including EBRD. The Amulsar project is the largest industrial project in Armenia today for the development of the Amulsar gold deposit with a total value of $ 370 million. In August 2016, the project for the construction and development of the deposit was launched. Preparatory work has been going on since 2006. The life of the Amulsarsky deposit will be 10 years and 4 months, with an average of 200 thousand ounces of gold (about 10 million tons of ore) planned annually. The company is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Amulsar deposit is the second largest reserves in Armenia.

Yerevan, Baku differ on direct link set up to ease tensions

By BBC Monitoring

Armenian and Azerbaijani officials have made conflicting statements on a direct communication line between the leaderships of the two countries.

The idea of a direct line comes from a short conversation between the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders, Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev respectively, on the side-lines of the CIS summit in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on 28 September. The two men reached a verbal agreement on taking measures to reduce tensions and prevent ceasefire violations along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and the contact line in Azerbaijan's breakaway Karabakh and agreed to set up a direct communication line.

Since then, Armenian officials, including Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, have said that tensions have eased and the situation has improved in Karabakh and on the border.

Sputnik Armenia website quoted on 6 November Armenian Defence Minister Davit Tonoyan as saying that a direct phone link with the Azerbaijani side, which was set up to coordinate military issues along the border, was already functioning. He added that the communication line was not between the two countries' defence ministers. He said a relevant official was responsible for communicating and reporting the minister's messages.

"When we fix movements of troops, engineering works, or some other actions, we communicate to the Azerbaijani side to stop it," Sputnik quoted Tonoyan as saying and adding that the Azerbaijani side's reaction was "very constructive".

Tonoyan said there was no direct phone link between Acting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, but he said "the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry also communicates not with me personally, but with the ministry, also constructively".

Tonoyan also noted that the tension on the frontline reduced after the Pashinyan-Aliyev meeting in Dushanbe.

However, the Azerbaijani Minval.az quoted a statement made by the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry on the same day that denied Tonoyan's statement.

"There is no connection or any other kind of contacts between the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry and the Armenian Defence Ministry," the statement said.

"Under the Dushanbe agreement, a responsible person has been identified to maintain connections with Armenia over the situation on the front line, but the person is not an officer of the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry," the statement by the Defence Ministry said.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ – Rachael Jerahian (www.ladywithapassport.com) has been traveling the world for much of her adult life, often moving from coast to coast in the U.S. and abroad for business. But in what became a journey of self-discovery as well as a testament to the human spirit, Rachael recently launched history's first all-inclusive world travel expedition. Rachael will complete the American leg of her tour by March 2019.

Finishing in Hawaii next year, Rachael has been working closely with various state tourism boards as she moves throughout the U.S. in a bid to help those states educate the public about the sites and destinations they have to offer visitors. She has already worked with multiple locations in Washington including The Long Beach Peninsula, Whidbye Island and Bellingham, as well as the board in Ketchum, Idaho.

After her tour of the U.S., Rachael's next step will be to travel to all countries of the world, as well as ski both the north and south pole before scaling all seven major summits of the Earth. Rachael's main goal is the education of herself and others about her country and the world in which she lives. Visiting everything from National Parks to historic monuments, Rachael wanted to completely immerse herself in both culture and nature.

In a world full of both good and evil elements, Rachael desires to showcase the positive aspects of the various cultures and societies that populate this diverse planet. This information will better position her to give back to a world that has bestowed so much upon her, despite the terrible tragedies she experienced at such a young age.

Rachael's Motto: A Blueprint for Living

Overcoming tragedy is something everyone faces: perhaps life is balanced in such a way that great highs can only be experienced after horrific lows. But it is how one handles both situations that ultimately defines one's character. As an Armenian and a Syrian who was raised Jewish, Rachael tragically lost both of her parents to cancer by the age of 30. Her story now is a tale of perseverance and love in the face of devastating grief.

Rachael wants most to illustrate that anyone, from any background, can travel. And that travel is truly the only way to understand the world. Travel can be more than a selfish indulgence; but rather, it is a tool for education, grounding a person in the reality of the diversity of their surroundings. People should not fear traveling to places on their own, regardless of sex, class or financial status. Through travel, Rachael has found herself better informed with political, gender and social justice issues that affect the world.

Rachael gladly welcomes those who are interested to follow her on her journey. She is also available for:

Foreign musicians will continue their work in Armenia

LENGTH: 254 words

DATELINE: Yerevan November 8

Alexander Avanesov. Foreign musicians will continue their work in Armenia. At the November 8 sitting, the RA government decided to allocate 48.4 million drams to pay their fees.

According to Acting Minister of Culture of Armenia Lilit Makunts, the National Philharmonic Orchestra periodically invites leading foreign musicians, which enhances not only the professionalism of the orchestra, but also the image of Armenia in the international arena.

Earlier this issue was handled by the ''Luys'' Foundation, however, after its liquidation, the state assumed the costs of their maintenance. Acting Minister stressed that we are talking about six musicians employed in the orchestra. Moreover, funds will be allocated only for the current year. In the future, Lilit Makunts promised to find funds from alternative sources foreign funds, grants and donations.

The proposal of the Ministry of Culture raised concerns about Acting Minister of Finance of Armenia Atom Janjughazyan, who pointed out that the initiative of the Ministry of Culture would be an additional burden on the budget. He recalled that according to the draft basic law of the country for 2019, funds for these purposes are not provided at all. "It would not have happened later that in 6 months you will begin to demand new financial investments," the country's chief financier expressed his concern.

In response, Makunts again promised to find alternative sources of financing in the future.

To note, we are talking mainly about musicians invited from Russia and Spain.

For the second year in a row, Lebanon's Homenetmen Antelias women's basketball team were crowned champions at the Arab Clubs Championship, defeating Egypt's Ahly 83-57.

The Lebanese-Armenian team, part of the Lebanese League, remained undefeated in this, the 20th tournament of its kind, held in Alexandria from 23 to 31 October. On the way to the crown, they beat Ahly twice.

Homenetmen dominated the final from beginning to when they were crowned champions. Results of the first three quarters were 19-14, 39-26 and 63-41. Throughout the game, the champions managed to score nine three-pointers out of 27 attempts and made all their 12 foul shots.

Apart from the final game, Homenetmen Antelias played five matches, sweeping all before them. The team managed to secure first place in Group B by beating Ahly 96-72. In the quarter-final the Lebanese beat Alexandrian Olympi Club 85-51 and in the semi-final flew past Jordan's Al-Fuheis 97-62. Eight Arab clubs, including two from Egypt, participated in the championship.

Throughout the tournament, the Lebanese team showed a high level of basketball skills and team spirit. "My team is a great team, we work hard everyday in practice, we actually came to Egypt knowing we will defend our title. Our opponents were great, especially Al-Ahly, but I believe we were strong enough and we deserved the trophy," Homenetmen's Greek coach Kapogianni told Al-Ahram Weekly.

At the closing ceremony, Ahly's Rana Abdel-Zaher won the cup for most three-pointers and Thorayya Mohamed, also from Ahly, was top scorer, while Lebanese team's Rebecca Akl was selected the tournament's best player.

During the two games in which Ahly and Homenetmen met, the Alexandrian Olympi Stadium where the tournament was held rocked with vociferous cheering from both teams' supporters. At the end of those two specific matches, the champions, led by their manager Taline Khatchadurian and coach Eleni Kapogianni, made special shoutouts to greet the 150 supporters of the Homenetmen Armenian family from Cairo and Alexandria, expressing their gratitude for attending both games to support the team.

"The organising committee in Alexandria did a very good job, it was a great tournament, you people gave us a great hospitality," Kapogianni, who started coaching with the team only this season, told the Weekly. However, her wish was that the tournament's schedule could be available in English too.

Homenetmen, also known by its acronym HMEM – which translates into the Armenian language as Armenian General Union of Body Culture – is a pan-Armenian Diaspora organisation founded in November 1918 in Constantinople. The organisation, which is celebrating its centennial this year, is the sports and scouting wing of the worldwide Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Party. Its motto is 'Rise and raise, elevate yourself and elevate others with you'.

Since its establishment, Homenetmen's main aim has been to find a haven for Armenian children and youths living in orphanages, as well as those who were saved from the genocide committed by Ottoman Turks in 1915, and give them moral support.

After its founding, several Homenetmen chapters were established in the Armenian Diaspora, in many cities in the Middle East, Europe, the United States, Canada, South America and Australia.

Before the official establishment of Homenetmen in 1918, Alexandria's Gamk and Cairo's Ararat clubs were founded in 1912 and 1914 respectively, who later joined the pan-Armenian Diaspora organisation for sharing the same ideology.

Sports: Armenia’s Martirosyan claims maiden global crown with men’s 109kg triumph at 2018 IWF World Championships

Insidethegames.biz

  • Friday, 9 November 2018

Armenia's Simon Martirosyan claimed his first-ever global title after powering to victory in the men's 109 kilograms category on the penultimate day of the 2018 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships here in Turkmenistan's capital.

Despite finishing second in the snatch with 195kg after failing with a world standard-breaking attempt of 197kg, the 21-year-old went onto win the clean and jerk with a world standard of 240kg for a world standard total of 435kg.

The first of Martirosyan's two successful clean and jerk lifts, which came at 230kg, also proved to be enough to secure the gold medals in that event and the total.

It earned the Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist and 2017 European champion a world standard total of 425kg that he would go onto break for a second time.

"I knew I will have a lot of strong competitors," Martirosyan, who opted not to carry out his final lift, said.

"I just did the same thing I always do, I gave my best."

The silver medallist in the total with 419kg was China's Yang Zhe, who won the snatch with 196kg and finished fourth in the clean and jerk with 223kg.

Rounding out the overall podium with 403kg was Poland’s Arkadiusz Michalski after he came 15th in the snatch with 175kg and second in the clean and jerk with 228kg.

Surprisingly, Rio 2016 gold medallist Ruslan Nurudinov of Uzbekistan bombed out of the snatch following one failure at 187kg and two at 189kg.

The 26-year-old bounced back, however, to win the clean and jerk bronze medal with 227kg.

"This is more than I expected tonight," Nurudinov said.

"I was unfortunately sick all week.

"I had a temperature and I feel weak."

The snatch bronze medallist was Russia's Rodion Bochkov with 190kg, earning his country a third podium finish of these World Championships after Artem Okulov claimed double gold in the men’s 89kg category on Tuesday (November 6).

The 2018 World Championships are the first event to be held since the re-structuring of the IWF’s weight classes, nullifying earlier records.

It is for this reason that the term "world standard" is being used as oppose to "world record".

There were also medals awarded today in the women’s 87kg category as China’s Ao Hui beat North Korea’s Kim Un Ju to overall gold following an intriguing battle between the two lifters.

The 21-year-old Ao won the snatch with 117kg to give her a 6kg advantage over third-placed Kim, the 2014 Asian Games champion in the 75kg category.

Kim managed to overcome Ao in the clean and jerk, registering 152kg to her nearest rivals 151kg, but it was not enough to ensure victory in the total.

Ao finished on 268kg overall, while Kim had to settle for 263kg.

The Dominican Republic’s Crismery Dominga Santana Peguero won the bronze medal in the total with 254kg having finished second in the snatch with 116kg and fifth in the clean and jerk with 138kg.

The fourth medallist in the category was Chile’s Maria Fernanda Valdes Paris, who came third in the clean and jerk with 140kg.

Another notable performance came from 40-year-old Ecuadorian Oliba Seledina Nieve Arroyo as she defied her age to record an impressive seventh-place finish in the total with 241kg.

Action in Ashgabat is due to conclude tomorrow.

Medals will be awarded in the women's over-87kg and men's over-109kg categories.

Competition will be followed by the Closing Ceremony.

Arsenal secured a place in the last 32.

"He is at the hospital. The news is that we are going to wait, but we think it's a serious injury," said Arsenal boss Unai Emery.

Welbeck was hurt in the 25th minute when he jumped for a header and landed badly on his right ankle.
