Five ministries to be cut in Armenia

Aysor, Armenia
Dec 24 2018

According to the official draft decision of the Armenian government, 5 ministries will be cut in Armenia – Diaspora, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs, Agriculture and Energy ministries, vice speaker of the parliament, Republican party member Arpine Hovhannisyan says.

“As it was expected the new government has not made us wait long. Only a week after publication of voting results the government puts into circulation bill on making changes and amendments in the law on Government’s structure and activity,” Hovhannisyan said.

According to the bill five ministries will be united with others.

Hovhannisyan said the bill will create two direct impacts with the first and most painful one the unavoidable staff cuts.

“Leaving the people without jobs in the New Year the “person-oriented” government once again reiterated that it acts with the principle of finding not right but easy solutions,” she said, adding that their party has voiced about it throughout the campaign but people believed Pashinyan.

She said she will refer to the other surprise prepared by the government for state employees after New Year holidays.

Report: Falcons could fire Steve Sarkisian, Marquand Manuel

ByJAMES PARKS Dec 18, 1:13 PM

It looks like some changes are on the way in Atlanta.

The Falcons organization could be undergoing some “significant changes” on their coaching staff in the approaching offseason, according to a report from NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

It appears that second year offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian is the one name currently on the hot seat after suffering another late season decline in his offensive play calling duties.

But defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel is also looking at the possibility of losing his job as well after the Falcons endured a major regress in the quality of defensive play over the season.

One name under consideration to replace Sarkisian on offense is Darrell Bevell, who was the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings from 2006 to 2010, and the Seattle Seahawks from 2011 to 2017. Bevell and Dan Quinn maintain a close relationship, as both were with the Seahawks organization during their Super Bowl run.

Sarkisian appeared to have made significant progress calling the offense, including a run of a dozen straight red zone scoring drives, but in the latter half of the season, the offense struggled again, with their rushing attack ranking last and emerging as the last unit in football to rush for 1,000 yards.

There’s a strong possibility of significant changes to Dan Quinn‘s #Falcons staff, including replacing OC Steve Sarkisian. One name to keep in mind: ex-#Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell, who actually spent a few weeks in camp working with Atlanta‘s defense.

“You’d better believe we’re evaluating everything and doing anything to get it right,” head coach Dan Quinn said about prospective changes in the organization this offseason.

Naturally, the organization will lean heavily on the injury angle for their failures.

As they have every reason to. The Falcons lost some of their best players, particularly on defense, early on this season. Middle linebacker Deion Jones, their tackles leader and play caller on defense, strong safety Keanu Neal, arguably their hardest hitter in the secondary, free safety Ricardo Allen, in addition to both offensive guards Andy Levitre and Brandon Fusco, and running back Devonta Freeman, among others, have been put on injured reserve.

The absence of both starting safeties has in turn compromised the play of their cornerbacks, as Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford have been on the receiving end of some big plays from opposing offenses, and consequently come under heavy criticism from the fan base.

But the season went on, regardless of those injuries, and it was the Falcons’ job to find some way around those missing players, by making some alteration to their approach.

For a while, it worked. After a poor 1-4 start, the Falcons suddenly went on a three game win streak and actually crawled back to .500 on the year.

But then came a five game losing streak that has seen the team suffer notable and consistent declines in all phases of the game.

“It hasn’t been to the level that we’ve needed to for a while, not just in the last few weeks,” Quinn said. “To have some of these inconsistencies show up over an extended period of time has been definitely something that’s been at the front of my mind.”

The Falcons will likely not be making any great changes, considering the general quality of their roster, and will instead look to re-group after the return of their injured starters.

But there will be a wide ranging investigation from top to bottom.

“As we’re going through it, from players to staff to everything, we want to make sure we look at the body of work,” Quinn said.

“And get clear, concise evaluations on everybody. When you’re standing where we’re at, it’s not what you want to do, but that’s part of it and what we’re looking at for sure. If you’re clearly at four wins during this time, then we have not met expectations.”

Alex and Ani Brings Up Pandora in Suit With Sterling

December 12, 2018 by ROB BATES

In a Dec. 7 filing in Ohio federal court, Alex and Ani asked Judge Sara Lioi to let it seek evidence to determine whether rival charm brand Pandora interfered with its relationship with Sterling Jewelers.

Pandora’s charms are currently sold at Jared, which is owned by Sterling. Jared briefly carried Alex and Ani, but the relationship ran aground, leading to the current lawsuit.

“Through the discovery conducted in this matter to date, Alex and Ani has substantiated various concerns related to Pandora’s interference with the contractual relationship between itself and Sterling, to the detriment of Alex and Ani,” reads the motion for reconsideration, submitted by Alex and Ani’s counsel Mark Geragos.

Alex and Ani’s filing claims that “Sterling admitted to four separate instances in which Pandora communicated to Sterling its dissatisfaction with respect to Alex and Ani and Sterling’s competing contractual relationship.”

The motion for reconsideration seeks a telephone conference to discuss modifying the existing scheduling order to permit additional discovery. On Nov. 20, Lioi denied Alex and Ani’s initial request for a telephone conference as untimely.

The motion also asks the court “to grant [Alex and Ani] leave to amend its pleadings and add claim(s) against Pandora as a third-party defendant.”

Asked for comment, a Pandora spokesperson said that it has “no involvement in this case” and that it has “not been contacted by any of the parties.”

Sterling, a division of Signet Jewelers, originally filed suit against Alex and Ani last year. The two had forged an ill-fated agreement in 2015 to sell Alex and Ani’s products in more than 100 Jared stores.

Sterling claimed in its suit that Alex and Ani’s refusal to allow “certain discounting strategies” left it stuck with millions in inventory. In its counterclaim filed in February, Alex and Ani charged that Sterling deliberately breached the two parties’ contract,

According to a status report filed Dec. 7, the two sides engaged in settlement discussions in November but did not come to a resolution.

Sterling declined comment, citing pending litigation. Alex and Ani’s attorney Geragos did not return a request for comment.

Spitak is the brilliant proof of what collective, progressive beautiful things humanity can do – Serj Tankian

18:59,

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 21, ARMENPRESS.  U.S.-Armenian rock singer, soloist of “System of a Down” group Serj Tankian gave an interview to “Rolling Stone” magazine. ARMENPRESS reports to the question of the journalist if he is somehow connected with the 1988 earthquake of Spitak, the singer answered that his wife is a survival of the earthquake.

“My wife actually lived through the earthquake. She was in school when it happened, and luckily their building didn’t collapse. They were pretty close to the epicenter.

The years after the earthquake were the darkest days that Armenia had seen for a long time, because they were without power through heavy, cold winters. She’s told me stories of how they lit fires at school just to stay warm. Right after the earthquake, there were a lot of robberies, so crime went up. She has all these horrific stories of living without water or using only one hour of water a day. People would go, “Oh, shit, we just found out we’re going to have water in 20 minutes. Everyone run home.” You had to learn how to connect batteries so you could watch something on TV, ’cause there’s no power. My wife’s generation is unique. They know how to do everything”, Tankian said.

According to him, he was in the USA at that time and remembers going around door-to-door trying to fund-raise to send money to Armenia.

“If you go to Armenia now and go to Spitak, the city where the epicenter of the earthquake in ’88 was, you’ll see it’s such a unique city because each block, each street has completely different architecture, because one is built by the U.S., one by the Swedes, one by the Italians and another by the Germans. It is such a beautiful scene in that way. It’s really, really very emotional seeing that because it shows you what collective, progressive beautiful things humanity can do”, Tankian said.

Speaking about his future plans the rock singer said that he has some pieces intended for films.

“We have a few other soundtracks we’re going to release for films that we did a while back but never put out soundtracks for, such as The Last Inhabitant and Midnight Star, which is a video game. But I am working on a number of things right now, including Kavat Coffee, and I’m executive-producing two documentaries.

One is a film, I Am Not Alone, about the Armenian revolution. I met with the prime minister now and said, “We have to make a film about this. No one is going to believe that in 40 days, a post-oligarchic, monopolistic, corrupt regime has been replaced by a modern, progressive, democratic, true society without one person dying. No one’s going to believe that.” I’m going to compose for it as well.

I also have a music documentary I’m doing that’s tentatively called Truth to Power, looking through my eyes at how message becomes reality through the arts. Instead of focusing on me as an artist, it asks, how does one’s message come to fruition? Can music change the world? We’re shopping that and looking for co-production partners. We’re hoping it will be done by next year as well”, he said.

“It was an impressing evening, and we are delighted by the support of the Diaspora and our global family, with the people who for 15 years deeply believed and provided donation to the COAF mission. This enables us to expand our activity by serving 150.000 residents of already 100 communities. Moreover, the recent peaceful revolution [in Armenia] further highlights the COAF fundamental values by instilling democracy and freedom for the citizen to determine his/her future”, COAF founder and executive director Garo Armen said.

A significant component of the evening was a live art auction guided by Gala Honorary Chair Tony Shafrazi, one of the art world’s most prominent figures.

COAF ambassador Andrea Martin once again hosted this year’s gala. The Andrea Martin Performing Arts Auditorium, located in the COAF SMART Center, was named after the Emmy and Tony Award-winning Armenian-American actress in appreciation of her love and support for the children of Armenia.

COAF’s Humanitarian Award was presented to Vartan Gregorian (president of the Carnegie Corporation) and his late wife Clare Gregorian, who was a founding COAF board member. Nine college scholarships were established for COAF youth in Armenia in appreciation of Clare Gregorian’s dedication.
