Book: Acclaimed Journalist William Rempel to Present New Biography of Kirk Kerkorian at Naasr

BELMONT, Mass.—William C. Rempel, a veteran investigative reporter who spent more than three decades at the Los Angeles Times, will present his new book The Gambler: How Penniless Dropout Kirk Kerkorian Became the Greatest Dealmaker in Capitalist History, on Thursday, February 1, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. at the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR) Center (395 Concord Ave., Belmont).

The program is open to the public and copies of The Gambler will be available for purchase and signing by the author.

The Gambler is the rags-to-riches story of one of America’s wealthiest and least-known financial giants, self-made billionaire Kirk Kerkorian—the daring aviator, movie mogul, risk-taker, and business tycoon who transformed Las Vegas and Hollywood to become one of the leading financiers in American business.

In this engrossing biography, Rempel digs deep into Kerkorian’s long-guarded history to introduce a man of contradictions—a poorly educated genius for deal-making, an extraordinarily shy man who made the boldest of business ventures, a careful and calculating investor who was willing to bet everything on a single roll of the dice.

Rempel’s 36-year career at the Los Angeles Times, both as a writer and an editor, produced a collection of high-profile projects. His groundbreaking reports on Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda were published before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and his extensive coverage of supertanker safety flaws began years before the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster.

Rempel’s work has been recognized with numerous journalistic honors, including an Overseas Press Club award and the Gerald Loeb Award. He was also a finalist for the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting. And in 2015 he toured the former Soviet states of Ukraine and the Republic of Georgia for the U.S. State Department, meeting with professional and student journalists to advocate the value of aggressive investigative reporting in those young democracies.

Armenians among world’s top backgammon players in 2017 Armenians among world’s top backgammon players in 2017

The year 2017 was successful, especially for Armenian professional backgammon players.

In particular, the national backgammon team of Armenia became the winner in the final of world’s best backgammon teams’ tournament, the Worldwide Team Challenge, which was held in Georgia within the framework of the Backgammon World Championship. In addition, Tsaruk Manukyan (Armenia) won the Grand Prix at this event.

Separately, Muscovite Armenian Mikayel Vardanyan became bronze medalist in speed gammon at the annual Backgammon World Championship, which is held in Monte Carlo.

Armenians were among the best also at the tournaments of the Russian Sport Backgammon Federation.

In addition, Russian Armenian football journalist Artur Petrosyan became the winner of the speed gammon competition at the annual International MERIT Open Backgammon Championship, which is held in Cyprus.

Food: Khachapuri is a big, wonderful mess of melted cheese, dough, salt, and crunch

Until recently, Americans didn’t appreciate the simple beauty of eggs. Yes, they knew eggs could raise baked goods, enrich a casserole, and elicit a smile if presented sunny-side up at breakfast, with fat pieces of crusty potato beside them.

But where Chinese cooks stirred an egg into fried rice or dropped one into bubbling soup, French cooks added an egg and bacon to frisee lettuce, and North Africans poached them in spicy tomato sauce, chefs here were still using them in cooking — as ingredients really, rather than celebrating the perfect ovoid on its own.

Then the light dawned (or as my friend likes to say, “dawn breaks over Marblehead”), and eggs were everywhere: a fried egg might appear on a seared pork chop, a poached egg on steamed asparagus, a soft-cooked egg on a grain bowl, a jiggly egg on cheese pizza. Tender whites and yolks that spill open with the touch of a fork are extremely appealing we all discovered, and not just at breakfast.

Jose Mourinho is ready to sell Henrikh Mkhitaryan .

The Armenian playmaker has struggled to win over the Manchester United boss this season and was reported to be part of the package to tempt Arsenal to sell Alexis Sanchez.

Mkhitaryan was bought from Borussia Dortmund in a £26.8million deal 18 months ago after being named the Bundesliga players’ player of the year.

Mourinho said: "My approach is that every player has a price. And I am not the kind of blind manager.

"Blind in the sense that this player is untouchable, this one can never be sold."

"So when the transfer window is open it’s also open for any club that is interested in our players. Then it’s up to us to make the decision yes or no. It’s up to us to make the right price.

"Mkhitaryan played the last match in the FA Cup against Derby. He probably will play the next one against Stoke. He is our player and a very good player. So tomorrow training, then Sunday selected and Monday play."

In his final season for Dortmund Mkhitaryan scored 18 goals in 51 games as well as making 15 assists. But this season he’s without a goal in his last 13 games for United and was left out in November after a spat with Mourinho.

Sports: Armenian athlete pulls a hefty car with her hair

Where extreme stress and attempts of reaching impossible beauty standards has added hair damage to the long list of worries for women, this girl flaunted the strength of her hair in an exceptional manner.

This strong young lady dragged a weighty car several feet forward with the help of nothing but her hair.

Karine Sargsyan, is a young sportswoman from Armenia who overwhelmed the crowd by pulling a two ton car in the Armenian capital city of Yerevan.

The 16 year old claimed that “there were many people who pulled a car fixed to their hair, whereas she will be the first one to do it facing the car.”

Karine , an ardent boxing fanatic,  expressed her great desire of getting universal recognition stating that she wants to be a “world champion.”

The young athlete’s family told the media that she had gotten these inborn abilities of strength from her father who used to pull boats and planes with his skin.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has phone chat with football chief amid Manchester United exit talk

Doubt has been cast of the future of the Man Utd player

By Anthony Jepson

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been linked with a Manchester United exit and the head of the Football Federation of his home country, Armenia, believes he is too good to languish on the bench.

Mkhitaryan has endured a troubled season, with United manager Mourinho dropping him from the squad for lengthy spells.

The Old Trafford manager is believed to be willing to sanction a sale and the forward – who he bought from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 – has been mooted as a possible makeweight in a move for Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez.

Armenian football boss Ruben Hayrapetyan says he has had phone conversations with his country's national hero.

“I talked to Henrikh on the phone, but I don’t want to make any comments," he told Public Radio of Armenia.

"The coach-player relations can often worsen or improve. There is no need in intervening with their working process.

“Should he fail to regain his place at Manchester United, he can play in any other world-class club. He will never remain on the bench, because he is a professional and diligent player and will always have a place in the main squad."

Mourinho apologised to Mkhitaryan for taking him off after just 45 minutes of United's FA Cup clash with Derby last week as he made a tactical change.

“[It was] unfair [to take Mkhitaryan off] and I told him that at half-time," he said.

“I didn’t like what I did. He didn’t deserve it, he was playing well, he wasn’t playing bad.

“Mkhi was the one that I sacrificed but it’s something that I don’t normally do but I did at half-time and apologised to him in front of other people because he didn’t deserve it.”

Mourinho has previously questioned Mkhitaryan's contribution and talk of a return to Dortmund has been suggested as a possible solution.

However, his wages at United would be a hurdle for most clubs interested in taking him and a move in the summer is seen as more likely.

Sports: Wins and fails of Armenian athletes in 2017

A review of last year’s achievements. It’s time to determine the next steps

Last year can be regarded as a rather successful one for Armenian athletes. Achievements were made not only in sports, in which Armenia has traditionally been strong in, but also in sporting events where ‘success’ and ‘Armenia’ have been utterly incompatible until now, for example in cycling and basketball.

However, before we proceed to some particular achievements it should be mentioned that in 2017 Armenian athletes brought home 201 medals, of which 61 were gold. These were won in various sporting events at the world and European championships.

Artur Aleksanyan, three-time World Champion in Greco-Roman Wrestling

Major achievements of the previous year include: the world champion titles won by Arthur Aleksanyan and Maksim Manukyan at the Greco-Roman wrestling tournament; the gold success of Armenian boxer Hovhannes Bachkov at the European Boxing Championship; the victory of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and F.C. ‘Manchester United’ in the Europa League and chess player Levon Aronian’s victory in the FIDE World Chess Cup in Tbilisi.

Simon Martirosyan, an Armenian weightlifter (105kg weight category) who won the title of champion at the European Weightlifting Championship in Split, Croatia.

Edgar Stepanyan, an Armenian cyclist, won the scratch race silver at the Track Cycling World Championship in 2017. After winning this tournament he has set a new goal – to make it to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The national basketball team which took part in the World Cup qualifiers also looked promising. It was one victory shy of being included in the list of top contenders. This achievement wasn’t without consequence though. The Armenian Basketball Federation organized a home championship league entitled ‘A League’, with seven teams participating in it.

There is certainly room for failure and defeat in sports, and the most noteworthy would probably be the disqualification of the Armenian weightlifting team. Some Armenian athletes turned out to be involved in a doping scandal. As a result, the entire national team was prohibited from participating in the 2017 World Cup.

Armenian football is still facing a crisis. Poor performance at the national championships and the uncertain future of the national team has given cause for reflection: is Armenian football’s driving force heading in the right direction?

A couple of new teams failed to breathe new life into Armenia’s club football. Such attempts were made in the past as well, but they were equally unsuccessful. An effort to develop provincial football seems to be the only right solution to the problem, and such a project has already been launched. F.C. Lori, which currently plays in Armenia’s A League, has been set up in Vanadzor city.

A list of the top 10 Armenian athletes was announced at the end of 2017 wherein athletes were selected through a new procedure. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, a football player, came in at 3rd place based on the votes received from sports journalists, but he was ranked 1st by sports fans via sms-voting.

This decision has stirred up debates in sports circles. It’s been said that the Armenian sports ‘envoy to the world’ led the top ten list undeservedly because he didn’t make any particular achievements as part of the national team.

JAMnews reported about that at the end of last year in its article: ‘A list of top ten 2017 Armenian athletes provokes a lively debate’.

In view of the aforesaid, the people responsible for selecting the best athletes will likely have to develop a new approach. Some countries for example have an additional nomination in the year’s top ten athletes rating, specifically designed for those who perform abroad and who have achieved considerable success there.

Head of the Football Federation of Armenia says Henrikh Mkhitaryan can play in any world-class club, should he not succeed to regain his place in Manchester United’s first squad.

“Henrikh Mkhitaryan will never remain on the bench,” Armenian football boss Ruben Hayrapetyan told a press conference today.

Hayrapetyan said he last talked to Armenia captain during the national team’s last friendly.

The FFA chairman, however, refrained from commenting on the current situation. “I talked to Henrikh on phone, but I don’t want to make any comments. The coach-player relations can often worsen or improve. There is no need in intervening with their working process,” Hayrapetyan said.

The Football chief said he possesses no precise information on whether Mkhitaryan is going to move to another team or not.

“Should he fail to regain his place at Manchester United, he can play in any other world-class club. He will never remain on the bench, because he is a professional and diligent player and will always have a place in the main squad,” Hayrapetyan stated.
