Iranian diplomat: Iran, Armenia and Georgia have a brilliant
opportunity to implement a number of trilateral projects

Yerevan 11.01.18

Marianna Mkrtchyan. Armenian Ambassador to Georgia Ruben Sadoyan
during the meeting with his Iranian counterpart Seyed Javad
Kavamshahid discussed the Armenian-Iranian economic relations.

As the press service of the Armenian Embassy in Georgia told ArmInfo,
the parties agreed at the beginning of the meeting that the relations
between Armenia and Iran are at a sufficiently high level and are
intertwined with many threads.

Speaking about economic cooperation, Sadoyan touched upon the
opportunities of Armenia as a transit country, and stressed that
official Yerevan is the only member of the Eurasian Economic Union
(EAP), which has land communication with friendly Iran and can become
a gateway for IRI in terms of access to the countries of the EAEC, CIS
and the EU.

In this context, the interlocutors stressed the importance of the
North-South road corridor as the shortest transit route connecting the
ports of the Persian Gulf and the Black Sea. The Iranian Ambassador to
Georgia noted that Tehran, Yerevan and Tbilisi have a brilliant
opportunity to implement a number of tripartite projects in such areas
as transport, energy and business. According to him, there are no
obstacles on this issue. The sides stated that the
Iran-Armenia-Georgia corridor could become a new and important bridge
linking Europe and Asia.

In this regard, Sadoyan stressed the importance of the interaction of
companies and management structures operating in the territory of the
free economic zone (FEZ) "Meghri" and FEZ "Araz." The interlocutor
also touched on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Sadoyan stated that the
efforts of Armenia and the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group are
constantly confronted with the opposition of Azerbaijan. According to
him, a vivid example of this, the last incident in Artsakh, when an
Armenian soldier died from the bullet of an Azerbaijani sniper.

The Ambassador stressed that Armenia highly appreciates the balanced
position of Iran on an exclusively peaceful settlement of the Karabakh
conflict on the basis of the norms of international law. Sadoyan also
inquired about the internal processes in Iran and stressed the
importance that the friendly IRI has for Armenia.

The RA Parliament`s special commissions approved the project "On Genocide Actions against Yezidis on the Territories of Iraq Controlled by Terrorist Groupings"

The RA Parliament`s special commissions approved the project "On
Genocide Actions against Yezidis on the Territories of Iraq Controlled
by Terrorist Groupings"

Yerevan January 11

Ani Mshetsyan. The Commission on Foreign Relations and European
Integration of the Armenian Parliament unanimously approved the draft
statement on "Genocide actions against Yezidis on the territories of
Iraq controlled by terrorist groups."

As the deputy from the ruling Republican Party and the Yezidi
community of Armenia, Rustam Mahmudyan stated during the commission
meeting, the genocidal actions against the Yezidis of Iraq can not be
qualified otherwise than as a crime against humanity. RPA MP Shirak
Torosyan said that the issue was submitted for discussion with a
significant delay, and that the text of the statement should indicate
the number of victims and victims of the actions of militants.

Secretary of the parliamentary faction Tsarukyan Vahe Enfiazjyan noted
that the actions that were committed against the Yezidis are, beyond
any doubt. a genocide, and this fact must be recognized.

Meanwhile, RPA deputy Artashes Geghamyan said that the adoption of
such a statement is somewhat risky, as it puts, in Geghamian's
opinion, into questioning the existence of statehood in Iraq. "Armenia
and Iraq are linked by long-standing friendly relations, and the
authorities of this country have always positively treated the
representatives of the Armenian community," the deputy said,
suggesting adding a provision on the support of friendly Iraq by
Armenia. The MP also noted that such issues should not simply appeal
to the international community, but to the UN Security Council. In
addition, Geghamyan suggested replacing the phrase "genocidal actions"
with the term "genocide" in the text of the statement.

The head of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, RPA
Vice-President Armen Ashotyan, responding to Geghamyan, said that this
issue was repeatedly discussed with experts-genocide experts and
specialists in international law who stated that the term "genocide"
can only be used in If this crime was carried out by a certain state
in relation to one or another nationality. "Since ISIS is a terrorist
organization, it's rather difficult to evaluate its actions against
the Yezidi people from the point of view of international law. We de
jure and de facto condemn this crime," explained Ashotyan,
nevertheless, having agreed to the introduction of some changes in the
text of the statement. The Yezidi community of Armenia earlier raised
the issue of the need to recognize the "Yezidi genocide" by the
parliament of Armenia, not only in Iraq, but also in Ottoman Turkey in
the early 20th century. However, the Armenian parliamentarians
considered that in order to recognize the "Yezidi genocide" in Ottoman
Turkey, there were not enough facts, and decided to wait for
recognition of the "genocide" in Iraq, which caused a backlash from
the Yezidi community. Nevertheless, RA President Serzh Sargsyan raised
the issue of the massacre of the Yezidis in Iraq from the UN tribune
and stressed the need for their international protection.

Climate of Armenia can become tropical

There was snow in the Sahara Desert several days ago, but it is “spring” in Yerevan today. This is not the first time, however, that the Meteorological Center of the RA Ministry of Emergency Situations predicted a higher air temperature than norms r weather anomalies for this winter. Environmentalist, Karine Danielyan, president of the Association for Sustainable Human Development, does not consider this unexpected.

“Global climate change is taking place. This is not surprising for scholars, as many decades ago this warning was made by scientists that if humanity continues its attitude towards nature, then the environment will change, so that man can no longer live on this planet,” says Karine Danielyan.

“Changes can be made, for example, to the National Climate Change Convention report, so the desertification risks and the risks of reducing water resources will increase. There are also, however, other predictions, such as that our climate can become tropical and the nature can change in positive direction. Thus, the system is so destabilized that it seems impossible to predict something seriously,” says Karine Danielyan.

This type of winter in Armenia will first of all hit agriculture. If there was frost, snow and ice, we would lose most of the crop.

Regardless of the fact that meteorologists consider this winter a weather anomaly, citizens are satisfied.

Will citizens participate in protest action of Yelk faction?

Let us remind that the Yelk (Way out) faction will hold a protest march on January 19 with the slogan “No rise in prices and tax burden.”
The attitude of citizens to this protest is different.

These days, the rise in price has become a serious topic. Yesterday, Serzh Sargsyan also held a meeting in the presidential palace during which he instructed to compile a list of socially important goods and continuously study the dynamics of the prices of these goods and to present whether the prices are normal. Also, he instructed to take measures to reduce the impact of the rise. Some citizens have hopes, but some others do not.

It should be reminded that the inflation in goods is conditioned by the changes introduced by the new Tax Code. Also, several goods have increased because of the increase in the excise tax rate. As well as about 800 types of goods imported to Armenia from third countries with the accession of EEU, they will have high customs duties for Armenia on January 1.

Argentine Armenian businessman Eduardo Eurnekian reportedly will pass the ownership of the Corporacion America Airports SA to his nephew, Martin, according to a report in Bloomberg  on Thursday.

Eurnekian’s company, which operates concessions in 51 airports worldwide is looking to sell as much as $750 million of shares between January and February in an initial public offering said he will oversee the deal, “but that doesn’t’ mean I’m in charge.”

“I am doing this IPO, but that doesn’t mean I’m in charge — the one who manages the airports is my nephew,” Eurnekian told Bloomberg during an interview in his Buenos Aires office. “I will oversee this deal this month, and my career in airports will be complete.”

Armenia International Airports, which operates Yerevan’s Zvartnots and Gyumri ‘s Shirak International airports, is part of the Corporacion America Airports, which announced the IPO.

A son of Armenian Genocide survivors, Eurnekian, who has other holdings in Armenia, and has been a fixture in Armenia since its independence, transformed the Zvartnots airport from its Soviet structure to a bustling international travel hub. His investments in the Shirak airport enabled air travel to Armenia’s second largest city, which had long been dormant.

State Dept. Ranks Armenia among ‘Safest Countries for Travel,’ Azerbaijan Not So Much

Yerevan’s Republic Square is a major tourist attraction

WASHINGTON—The State Department has ranked Armenia among the safest countries for travel.

On January 10, the Department of State launched improvements to how it shares information with U.S. travelers. The improvements are meant to provide US citizens with clear, timely, and reliable safety and security information worldwide.

Under the new system, every country has a Travel Advisory, providing levels of advice ranging from 1 to 4.

Armenia has been included in Level 1, the lowest advisory level for safety and security risk. Armenia’s neighbor Georgia has also been ranked in the same category, while Azerbaijan has been included in Level 2, where the State Department recommends toexercise increased caution.
Meanwhile, Russia and Turkey are at Level 3. US citizens are advised to avoid travel “due to serious risks to safety and security.”
