Weeklong honoring program for maestro Loris Tjeknavorian begins

TEHRAN – The Iranian-Armenian maestro Loris Tjeknavorian is being honored for his lifetime achievements during a weeklong program, which opened with a concert at Tehran's Vahdat Hall on Thursday.

At the beginning of the concert, the Tehran Contemporary Ensemble performed "Requiem for the Massacred", a piece composed by Tjeknavorian in memory of those who were killed in the Armenian Genocide committed by the Ottoman government.

Tjeknavorian was in attendance at the concert and said that he is eagerly waiting to see the performances of his compositions, most which have never been performed in Iran.

The honoring program entitled "80 Years of Loris Tjeknavorian" has been sponsored by the Tehran-based men's clothing store, Hacoupain.

The program continued at the Iranian Artists Forum on Friday by screening "Pilgrimage to Gyumri", a documentary film about a concert that Tjeknavorian performed to support the victims of the 7 December 1988 earthquake in northern Armenia, which killed 25,000 and left hundreds of thousands homeless.

Head of Armenian delegation to PACE: 2017 was very tense Head of Armenian delegation to PACE: 2017 was very tense

YEREVAN. – The year 2017 was tense for Armenian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), head of the Armenian delegation to PACE Arpine Hovhannisyan told Armenian News- NEWS.am.

According to her, 2017 was tense because several draft resolutions and documents, specifically concerning Armenian interests, were circulated in the PACE.

The delegation managed to neutralize the threats to Armenia, said Hovhannisyan, adding that it is impossible to completely avoid such situations because the Assembly is full of contradictory political interests.

According to her, the Armenian delegation to PACE will act in a more flexible manner and will change its tactics based on a specific situation and political agenda to effectively protect Armenian interests in this organization.

“We are actively involved in the discussion of general agenda, which is extremely important, since other members of the European family can be interested in the agenda of ther members in this way,” said Arpine Hovhannisyan.

According to the head of PACE, it is planned to improve the human rights situation in Armenia with European partners in 2018.

“We will also continue to cooperate with European Council and our EU partners in the coming year. In this regard, I would like to note that Armenia-EU Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, signed in November, 2017, provides for new prospects of cooperation to facilitate democratic institutions, the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms,” she said.

Asked about countering provocations of Azerbaijan in PACE, Arpine Hovhannisyan noted that provocations are a usual thing, but there are no such provocations that cannot be neutralized.

Armenia‘s Q3 GDP growth quickens to 3.5 pct yr/yr

YEREVAN, Nov 30 (Reuters) – Armenia‘s gross domestic product grew by 3.5 percent in the third quarter of this year, official data showed on Thursday, better than the same period in 2016 when it contracted by 2.6 percent.

The Caucasus nation‘s economic growth slowed to 0.2 percent last year, falling well short of the government‘s original target of 2.2 percent.

This year‘s figures are better so far. GDP growth hit 6.5 percent in the first quarter of 2017, outstripping a 4.4 percent rise in the same period a year earlier. The growth in the second quarter was 5.5 percent, up from 1.5 percent in the same period of 2016.

The country of 3.2 million depends heavily on aid and investment from former imperial master Russia, whose economic downturn has hit Armenian exports and remittances from Armenians working there.

The government expects the country‘s economy to grow by 3.2 percent this year, helped by lower borrowing costs and increased exports to Russia.

Armenian‘s Finance Minister Vardan Aramyan told Reuters in September the economy was set to grow by 4.3 percent this year.

The central bank said on Wednesday it had raised its forecast for GDP growth to 4.4-4.9 percent this year, up from an earlier estimate of 3.8-4.8 percent. (Reporting by Hasmik Mkrtchyan; Writing by Margarita Antidze; Editing by Alison Williams)

Armenia cenbank signals gradual change in its monetary policy

YEREVAN, Nov 30 (Reuters) – Armenia‘s central bank said on Thursday it planned gradual change in its monetary policy amid possible inflationary risks.

The ex-Soviet country‘s central bank launched a monetary easing cycle two years ago to prop up both consumer demand and inflation, but said in March it would be more cautious when cutting rates because of the potential economic and financial risks that lower rates carry.

The bank last trimmed the refinancing rate to 6 percent from 6.25 percent in mid-February and has since kept it unchanged.

“It will be necessary to neutralise monetary policy‘s stimulating conditions gradually in order to reach annual inflation target in mid-term,” the bank said in its inflation review.

The bank said it expected annual inflation to get closer to the target range of 4 percent plus/minus 1.5 percent helped by a restoration in consumer demand and a boost to economic growth.

Gross domestic product grew by 3.5 percent in the third quarter, as against a contraction of 2.6 percent in the same period last year, official data showed.

Consumer prices in Armenia rose by 0.8 percent in October, month-on-month, and by 1.2 percent year-on-year.

Armenia‘s Finance Minister Vardan Aramyan told Reuters in September he expected annual inflation to enter the target range in 2017 and dip under 4 percent in 2018.

Annual deflation in 2016 was 1.1 percent as Armenia felt the pain from an economic crisis in Russia, which hit consumer demand as remittances from Armenians working in its former Soviet ruler went down. (Reporting by Hasmik Mkrtchyan; writing by Margarita Antidze; Editing by Matthew Mpoke Bigg)

Armenian MP: Ankara takes into account Baku's position in normalizing relations with Yerevan Armenian MP: Ankara takes into account Baku's position in normalizing relations with Yerevan

YEREVAN. – There are several reasons that prevent the establishment of official relations between Turkey and Armenia, secretary of the Tsarukyan bloc NEWS.am заявил секретарь парламентской фракции блока «Царукян» Ваге Энфиаджян, отвечая на вопрос, могут ли возникнуть какие-либо предпосылки для сдвига в направлении налаживания армяно-турецких отношений. ">Vahe Enfiadjyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am asked whether there could be any preconditions for a shift towards the establishment of the Armenian-Turkish relations.

According to him, the main obstacle is a negative reaction to this process of the Azerbaijani side.

The precedent, as you remember, was the reaction of the Azerbaijani side to the Armenian-Turkish protocols, signed in Zurich. We should not forget about Baku's reaction to the plans to open the Yerevan-Van flight, which, however, was not realized,” he explained.

As the secretary of the faction noted, it is quite obvious that Turkey is fully aware of the fact that the hard and unpleasant reaction of Baku can be caused by the de-blocking of the Armenian-Turkish border.

At the same time, he added that the Turkish side understands that the opening of the border will lead to the economic development of other border regions, raising living standards in some provinces of the country, which are currently underdeveloped. However, as Enfiadjyan noted, Turkey is also aware of its benefits that it can get from the supply of Azerbaijani gas, since Azerbaijan and Iran are its main and cheapest gas supplier after Russia and Iran.

“Taking into the account the above and the Armenian-Turkish issue as a general, I do not see any real prospects for establishing relations in the near future," the secretary of the parliamentary faction of the Tsarukyan bloc concluded.

The Armenian-Turkish border has been closed since 1993 on the initiative of the Turkish side. Some reconciliation in the relations started in autumn 2008 initiated by Armenia's president Serzh Sargsyan

Armenian and Turkish Foreign Ministers signed “The Protocol on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Armenia and Turkey” and “The Protocol on Development of Relations between Armenia and Turkey” in Zurich on 10 October 2009. Later, Ankara put forward preconditions for the Karabakh conflict that disrupted the Armenian-Turkish reconciliation

Politics under the flowers in Pasadena: The politics of independence

Richard Kagan: The Kagan Conversation

On the first day of January, I watched the Rose Bowl Parade.  A particular float caught my eye.  The display of flowers and decorations depicted a scuba diver above sea turtles, latticed butterfly fish, sea grass and colorful coral formations, while real live young women were picking up stranded bottles and debris left from the waves on the shore.

This float won the International Award for the most Outstanding Float from Outside the U.S.  Its theme of “Caring for Our Sea” skillfully represented the themes of environmental conservation and value of the natural environment.

The owner of this float was China Airlines which surprisingly did not represent China but did represent the island government of Taiwan. Besides the contrary name, why not Taiwan Airlines, the display of sustainable development and environmental conservation was another clear distinction between the culture of Taiwan and that of China.

The usual cultural identity displayed by China is its long and rich history, its dancing minorities, and its imposing imperial monuments as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and dams on the Yangtze.

The culture on the Taiwan float was hardly different from any cosmopolitan country that is engaged in a pragmatic attempt to make a better future for its citizens and a cleaner environment for all. A further distinction between the government on Taiwan with the party-state government in Beijing is Taiwan’s exemplary democratic system, its strong economy and its distinctive heritage.

Today there is a momentous cultural and political conflict between Taiwan and China.  It is so great that America has determined that the status of Taiwan is still not settled.  The island is not necessarily under the authority and legitimacy of the government in Beijing.  The two territories are separated by the Strait of Taiwan, and by the 7th Fleet.  The U.S. does not have an embassy or ambassador in the capital of Taiwan which is called Taipei.  Yet, it has a representative to Taiwan who lives in Hawaii and meets with his staff in a large compound in Taipei during his visits there.

While Beijing insists that Taiwan is and has been part of China for centuries, Taiwan disagrees.  In fact, a former president of the island had his presidential carpet in his office designed as ocean waves to represent the identity of Taiwan as a maritime nation.  The history of the island was never to be viewed as part of the continent of East Asia, or what has often been called mainland China.

China has increased its claims against the “renegade” province of Taiwan by preparing thousands of long range missiles for barrages against the island.

China’s military operates massive military exercises that mimic an invasion and occupation of the Taiwanese nation. Beijing uses economic and political pressure to threaten other countries who want to treat Taiwan as an independent country. Most oppressive internationally, Beijing enforces an embargo against allowing Taiwan a seat in international organizations.  Threateningly, China has passed a resolution that justifies an attack on Taiwan if the island seeks the status of independence.

There is great concern that President Trump may make a deal with China regarding Taiwan.  If China helps to denuclearize North Korea, we may make a deal for Beijing to have control of Taiwan.  Some Taiwanese fear that the island will fall under some decentralized control by Beijing.  Or it may mean full domination of the population like the Communist Party rules over its Chinese citizens.

Even worse is the fear that if war breaks out, or even just hostilities, America will not have the ability to prevent China from forcing control over Taiwan through embargos, internal uprisings and even invasions.

Although the float did not carry the flag of Taiwan, it did have the slogan of the Taiwan Tourism Bureau on its side which could be felt by the nationalists in Beijing as a slap in the face — “Taiwan:  The Heart of Asia.”

Incidentally, there was no Taiwan flag on the float nor the official name of the island nation — The Republic of China.  In contrast, the American Armenian float had their representative dressed in a scarf with the official colors, red, blue and orange of the Armenian Nation.  There are 700,000 Armenian Americans from a homeland of 3 million.  The 700,000 Taiwanese Americans who left their island of 23 million did not have a chance to be represented by their ancestral flag in the parade.

Truly , China Airlines participated in two parades:  one with shining confidence in a safe and abundant future, and one with an invisible fear of being submerged into the depths of China’s present.

Why should we care?  First, even in the high emotions of a fantastic parade, we should not be blind to some of the realities.  And second, there are many hot spots in the world today.  But not less threatening are the ones that are beneath the surface that can catch us in a deadly surprise.

Sports: Borussia Dortmund enter talks with Manchester United for Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Borussia Dortmund enter talks with Manchester United for Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Borussia Dortmund have been heavily linked with a move for Henrikh Mkhitaryan over the course of the transfer window.

The reports in Germany suggested that Borussia Dortmund have entered talks with Manchester United for Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenia international was signed by Manchester United in July 2016 from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of 42 million euros. The 28-year-old has a contract until 2020 with the club.

Since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund, Mkhitaryan has scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists in 62 games for Manchester United, including two goals and six assists in 21 games in all competitions this season.

His record for Armenia is also impressive. Mkhitaryan has scored 25 goals in 70 matches for Armenia at senior level.

The Manchester United manager does not see him in his plans and would be open to letting him leave.

Peter Stoger is looking to shore up his midfield options and Mkhitaryan happens to be a target.

The Borussia Dortmund manager wants to continue to strengthening his squad so they’re able to compete both domestically and in the Europa League in the second part of the season.

According to the report, Borussia Dortmund have intensified plans this week to re-sign Mkhitaryan from Manchester United. BVB management are serious about bringing the Armenian back to the Bundesliga and have stepped up negotiations. The Armenia international has made it clear via intermediaries that he would be happy to return to his old club. There are two major obstacles for Borussia Dortmund to overcome, Manchester United’s asking price and the midfielder’s personal demands (in the region of 12.5 million euros per year).

Signing the 28-year-old in January would be a masterstroke from Peter Stoger.

A move to Borussia Dortmund is exactly what Henrikh Mkhitaryan needs to reignite his career, and we hope he is able to do just that.

Sports: A list of top ten 2017 Armenian athletes provokes a lively debate

JAM News
Jan 5 2018

The list was also criticised by one of the athletes mentioned in it

The Armenian media has published a list with the names of the top ten best athletes of Armenia in 2017. These names were chosen via votes received from sports journalists and mobile text messages of sports fans.

The top ten athletes were:

  • Henrikh Mkhitaryan, football, midfielder of the English Manchester United club.

  • Artur Aleksanyan, greco-roman wrestling, Olympic champion and three-time world champion.

  • Levon Aronyan, international chess grandmaster, two time world cup winner.

  • Grigor Mkhitaryan, member of the Armenian sambo team, world champion.

  • Maksim Manukyan, greco-roman wrestling, world champion.

  • Hovhannes Bachkov, boxer, multiple-time champion of Armenia, European Championship gold medalist.

  • Simon Martirosyan, weightlifting, Olympic silver medalist.

  • Edgar Stepanyan, member of the Armenian cycling team.

  • Artur Tovamasyan, member of the Armenian gymnastics team.

  • Tigran Kirakosyan, member of the Armenian sambo team, four-time world cup winner, world champion and three-time European Championship gold medalist.

The athletes were given symbolic statue-trophies and keys to Hyundai Elantra vehicles.

However, not everyone believes that the selection was fair. Some think that athletes equally deserving of this title were not included on the list.

This discontent was expressed by greco-roman wrestler Artur Aleksanyan. His statement resonated in the sports world as he was one of the athletes nominated.

“I don’t agree with this list. This year we had winners on the world and European level who didn’t make it onto the list. I think that this is the fault of the Ministry of Sports. It is likely that the vote was not properly organized. How can a world champion remain off the list? I don’t want the  impression to be formed that my opinion is being affected by the fact that I was not number one on the list. I simply do not agree with the results of the voting,” said Artur Aleksanyan.

The list of the ten best athletes of the year was also criticised by Artur Aleksanyan’s brother, Rafael Aleksanyan, who is also a greco-roman wrestler. He believes that footballer Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who plays for the English Manchester United club shouldn’t have been on the list.

“I respect Henrikh Mkhitaryan greatly. He is, without a doubt, the best footballer in the history of Armenia, but he didn’t win anything for our country – and so he shouldn’t have been on the list. The fact that he brought us into the limelight doesn’t mean that he has to be included in the rating of the best athletes of Armenia,” he said.

'He's finished'

Red Devil supporters have called for the club to cash in on the Armenian international after he had a mare against the Championship club

MANCHESTER UNITED fans have stuck the knife into Henrikh Mkhitaryan after his first-half showing against Derby.

The Armenian looked totally devoid of confidence against the Championship opposition before being hooked off for the second period.

He was greeted by jeers from the Old Trafford faithful when his cross was massively over hit when United were on the attack.

And he barely had a kick as he struggled to make a statement to boss Jose Mourinho before being replaced by Romelu Lukaku.

Fans have taken to Twitter to slate the attacking midfielder with many claiming it's time the Portuguese boss cashed in.

One said: "Mkhitaryan is finished at Utd I'm telling you."

Another wrote: "Surely this will be Mkhitaryan's last outing for Man Utd? Doubt he'll be coming our for the 2nd half at this rate."

One Manchester United fan said: "Actually feel a bit sorry for Mkhitaryan not sure I've seen many United players before look so shot of confidence, can't see a way back for him."
