Nicolas Aznavour, one of the sons of the legendary French Armenian artist, the late Charles Aznavour, was in Moscow. And he told the Russian-Armenian Information Agency (Rusarminfo) why he has decided to move to Armenia, and how he feels in his ancestral homeland.

Nicolas, who grew up in Switzerland, has been in Armenia numerous times. But it was this year that he made his final decision to move to the country.

“I love Yerevan, I like it, it’s comfortable there,” Nicolas Aznavour said regarding the capital city of Armenia.

But the main difficulty which he has faced in Armenia is his not knowing the Armenian language.

“Now I’m actively learning Armenian,” he said. “However, the Armenian language is very complicated, but I’m managing to speak [it] little by little. [And] by living in Yerevan, I can accelerate my [Armenian-language] learning.”

“I’m Armenian, and that’s not a subject for discussion,” added Nicolas Aznavour, who has Swedish roots from his mother’s side. “Perhaps, I don’t look like an Armenian in appearance, but there is a saying in French: ‘The clothes you wear don’t make you who you are;’ it truly is so.”

OSCE/ODIHR voices concerns about ‘intolerant, inflammatory rhetoric’ in Armenia ahead of snap elections

OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) conducting observation mission in Armenia, has published an interim report on the early parliamentary elections set for December 9.

The report says that elections are administered by the Central Election Commission (CEC), 38 Territorial Election Commissions (TECs) and 2,010 Precinct Election Commissions (PECs). The CEC is holding regular sessions and reaching decisions collegially and unanimously. No concerns were raised so far about the confidence in the CEC and TECs.

According to the report, preliminary lists have been posted for public scrutiny with a total of 2,577,112 registered voters. By law, after elections, the CEC will scan and publish all signed voter lists and post them on its website. A number of ODIHR Election Observation Mission (EOM) interlocutors expressed concerns about privacy of citizens' data.

The CEC registered candidate lists of nine political parties and two party alliances. All contestants met the 25 per cent gender quota. No concerns were raised about the candidate registration process.

OSCE/ODIHR says the election campaign officially kicks off on 26 November but early campaigning is not prohibited. Party interlocutors expressed confidence to the ODIHR EOM about the possibility to campaign freely, but some raised concerns about potential abuse of state resources, vote-buying and pressure on voters, especially in rural areas. Majority of ODIHR EOM interlocutors voiced concerns about intolerant and inflammatory rhetoric, particularly online.

The report also points to the fact that campaigning by government officials while performing their official duties is prohibited, adding that several political parties claimed in the media and to the ODIHR EOM that a 19 November event when the acting prime minister visited construction sites and attended a town celebration in the Gegharkunik region was an abuse of administrative resources.

It notes that the media are diverse, but many private outlets, including some major TV stations, are perceived as strongly associated with political parties. The public TV, financed by the state budget, continues to be perceived as having a pro-government editorial policy. In addition to the media, the role of social networks is growing rapidly. Facebook, in particular, has become a significant platform for political information and debate.

Some ODIHR EOM interlocutors noted improvements but characterized the public discourse as not conducive to criticism of the acting government, particularly the prime minister.

YEREVAN. – At all stages of independence, Russia and Armenia supported each other, Russian MP,  deputy chairman of Duma’s committee on CIS Konstantin Zatulin said at the first meeting of the Lazarev Club in Yerevan

“Be it within the CIS, CSTO, EAEU and other organizations, we are very interested, because Armenia, among other things, is going through very important internal processes so that lively exchange of views should not stop in all areas,” Zatulin said.

He added that since early parliamentary elections are coming soon in Armenia, the organizers tried to avoid discussing the situation related to internal processes, focusing on permanent values – issues of peaceful life of our peoples in conditions of secure borders and protecting the interests of two peoples.

“We love Armenia regardless of the presidents and authorities are at the helm,” Zatulin stressed.

The leaders of Armenia, the former presidents of Armenia and Artsakh, the current president of Artsakh, are invited to the meeting of the club.

“We respect the reasons for which many were unable to come,” Zatulin added.

The statement made by Armenia’s acting PM Nikol Pashinyan addressed to the authorities of Artsakh was not impulsive, it was well developed statement voiced as if unprompted, Republican party candidate Davit Shahnazaryan told the reporters today.

“It comes in the same chain with the statement of Sasun Mikayelyan,” Shahnazaryan said.

“The authorities of Karabakh did not respond to that provocative statement as Pashinyan’s experiment, he already carries out with his team, is aimed at creating public opposition with the authorities of Artsakh,” he said, adding that of course the latter will not give in to such provocation and unlike the ruling regime in Armenia they have high level of responsibility.

The United States and Israel are planning to create a chaos on the border of Karabakh and Iran, Republican faction lawmaker Artashes Geghamyan said today at the Lazarev Club’s first plenary session.

“The facts show that the United States, together with its closest ally Israel, will by all means create a chaos over Artsakh’s security zone, which has about 100 km-long border with Iran. This chaos will be managed by them. The first step to that is military aggression by the Azerbaijani side,” Geghamyan said.

He said Azerbaijan has spent $5,5 billion for acquiring Israeli military equipment.

Geghamyan stated that it is enough to study the dynamics of financial incomes received from different U.S. organizations to get convinced that the transfers received for “strengthening democracy”, “strengthening civil society” grow.

“As a result we have what we have today. After 20 days of revolution in Armenia U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo informs the Armenian side that they are discussing provision of $140 million to assist the efforts of the new Armenian government,” Geghamyan said.

Geghamyan also noted that Armenia believes in Russian and knows that President Vladimir Putin will not to allow war in Armenia and Karabakh.
