by Anita Iyer

Plan your last-minute holiday now.

It is a short working week in the UAE as two-day holiday is slated for both public and private sectors on the occasion of the 47th National Day.

Most residents working in private companies and the public sector will enjoy a four-day-long weekend from Friday to Monday. Offices will resume on December 4, 2018.

It is the perfect reason for a quick getaway, and in case you haven't planned anything, here are our last-minute options — with travel time under five hours!

Take your pick:

1. Georgia

You might have heard many of your colleagues head to Georgia for a long weekend. And this place is worth a visit with its scenic mountains and valleys.

Dig into the history of the place by visiting Tbilisi, the capital city. While there, bite into the popular dish Khachapuri (bread with cheese filling), Chakhokhbili (stewed chicken with fresh herbs).

Flight time: 3 hours 32 minutes.

Currency value: 1 UAE dirham = 0.73 Georgian Lari.

2. Istanbul

Flight time: 4 hours, 50 minutes.

Currency value: 1 UAE dirham = 1.49 Turkish Lira.

3. Azerbaijan

Bordering Russia and Georgia, Azerbaijan is known for having 9 of the 11 climates around the world. Baku, the central city, is a Unesco World Heritage site. Visiting the mud volcanoes figures amongst the fascinating things to do in Azerbaijan as it figures first in the world with over 350 located in the region. Thousands of tourists visit every year to watch the eruption.

Fashion: 2nd edition of Middle East Fashion Festival held in Cairo

Ahram Online, Egypt
Nov 25 2018
Ghada Abdel-Kader , Sunday 25 Nov 2018
Held on 23 November at Royal Maxim Palace Kempinski in Cairo, the 2nd edition of Middle East Fashion Festival gathered prominent fashion designers from five countries: Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Armenia and Morocco.

President of the Middle East Fashion Festival Walid Khalil spoke to Ahram Online about the one-day-event.

“This year, the festival showcased the work of three Egypt fashion designers: Omneya Hussein, Nadine Ezzat and Menna Agiza. Other notable names include Lebanese designer Anass Kadamani, Armenian designer Nuria, Moroccan Houda Benmlih and Jordan's Heba Idris.”

The seven designers were presenting their latest designs for their fall/winter collections, 2018/2019.

Designs included haute couture, elegant soiree gowns and wedding dresses.

Make up-artists from Egypt Heba Magdi, Hend Helmy and Libya’s Souad El-Bakush and Bay Tree beauty salon participated in the show.

The festival entertained more than 1,000 attendees, including VIP American visitors, media figures, artists, ambassadors and communities from the US, Belgium, Tunisia and Lebanon.

The guests of honour were Egyptian singer Anouska, and actress Rojina, and Tunisian actress Aisha Ben-Ahmed.

Attendees enjoyed the musical performances of Egyptian singers Zizi Adel and Ahmed Zaeem, pianist Dalal El-Khamisy and violinist Ahmed Mokhtar.

“The festival aimed at integrating and incorporating different cultures and bringing people closer together,” Khalil explained.

The first edition of Middle East Fashion Festival was held in March 2018. It is intended to be held twice a year (summer and winter).

Prominent Armenian designer Nuria has been in Egypt for 10 years. In her new collection she presented 20 different examples of soiree and wedding gowns. Nuria used blue, green, yellow, purple, creamy and off-white colours.

Nuria, who is fond of handmade garments, said: “All my designs were handmade and high quality of fabrics and textiles. I embroidered dantelle and guipure fabrics with Swarovski crystals.”

“My designs were inspired by Armenia’s nature. Also, some designs reflected Middle East cultures,” Nuria added.

Nuria made use of peach in her bridal gowns. “Wedding dresses are not necessarily white or off-white. We can use pastel colours,” she commented

Moroccan designer Houda Benmlih presented the traditional kaftan — which is the pinnacle of Moroccan fashion — with a modern touch. “My main concern," she said, "is reflecting Moroccan heritage or tradition in my designs. I tried to presented kaftans in modern way, and at the same time preserve its traditional shape as a kaftan, not as a dress.”

Benmlih's collection presented 10 different pieces of kaftans using dark blue, red, olive, green and off-white colours.

She used old Moroccan embroidery techniques, using payette, precious stones and Swarovski gems.

Lebanon was present through Anass Kadamani’s brand, "Anskada."

Kadamani described his collection as "prêt-a-couture". "It is how to look like a star; to have an understated luxury. We gave every woman the look fit to her body shape.”

Kadamani added: “In the collection, we have 10 different looks, including off-shoulder backless princess cut of one ivory-beige bridal dress. We used pastel colours and feathers in all designs.”

Egyptian designer Omneya Hussein has been in field of fashion for 10 years. This is her first time to participate in the fashion festival.

“In my winter collection, all my designs have a simple look. They are semi-couture. All colours are vivid and cheerful. I broke the rule of using dark shades of colours for the winter season,” Hussein said,

“My bridal dress was beautifully set with pearls and embodied florals,” Hussein added.

Libyan make-up artist Souad El-Bakush highlighted her routine by saying, “I used dusty colours with a simple look. It gave a fresh and perfectly natural look.”

“Eyeliner and lip-liner are out of fashion. Contouring and sculpting the face are trending. A natural medium set of eyebrows is fashionable,” El-Bakush added.

Azerbaijani press: MFA: Sahakyan’s visit to Russia undermining efforts to advance negotiation process on Karabakh conflict

00:12 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, November 25

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Issuing entry permit to Russia for Bako Sahakyan, a representative of the illegal separatist regime established in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, is undermining efforts to advance the negotiation process on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and contradicts Russia's mediation as co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, said Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry.

The ministry’s remarks came in response to the information about the visit of the "head" of the separatist regime created in Nagorno-Karabakh to Russia.

"This step of the Russian side does not correspond to the high level of current relations between Azerbaijan and Russia and contradicts the legal framework of bilateral relations, in particular the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Security between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Azerbaijan, which reads that "the Parties undertake not to support the separatist movements, as well as prohibit and suppress the activities of individuals, aimed against state sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the other side".

“Such voyages of the “head” of the illegal regime in the countries of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs can lead to an unpredictable development of the situation around the conflict. In this case, the entire responsibility will be on the Armenian side," the Foreign Ministry said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

Azerbaijani press: Statement: Overlooking Karabakh conflict is harmful for reputation of EaP CSF

00:25 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov.25

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Overlooking the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the context of the Draft Resolution of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum is harmful for the reputation of the EaP CSF in the eyes of the broader Azerbaijani community, reads a statement from the Azerbaijani National Platform of the EaP CSF.

“We, the Members of the Azerbaijani National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum (EaP CSF), following the widespread discussions of the Draft Resolution of the 10th Annual Assembly of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum in the Azerbaijani media, feel the need to clarify our position on the following points.
We appreciate the role of the EaP CSF in aiding all EaP countries’ civil societies in their strengthening of democracy, rule of law and sustainable development, which leads to greater integration with the European community,” said the statement.

The Azerbaijani National Platform said it acknowledges the positive role of the EaP CSF in bringing Azerbaijani and Armenian civil society representatives together, helping them to advance their peace agendas on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict; however, the Draft Resolution has failed to uphold the importance of territorial integrity issues for all of the EaP countries.

“This position has been stressed by the Joint Declaration of the Eastern Partnership Summit, held on 24 November 2017 in Brussels, Belgium, stating: “The European Union remains committed in its support to the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of all its partners”.”

The Azerbaijani National Platform is also concerned regarding the lack of Azerbaijani government representatives in the list of invitees. “It wishes to see the active participation of Azerbaijani government representatives in the Forum and calls on the Forum, the government of Georgia and the EU to issue the invitations in a speedy manner.”

The Azerbaijani National Platform stresses once more its appreciation for the work of the EaP CSF.

“At the same time, it would like to draw attention to the fact that the Azerbaijani government and civil society have developed complementary narratives on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, which remains a sensitive issue for the country.

“Overlooking the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the context of the Draft Resolution is harmful for the reputation of the EaP CSF in the eyes of the broader Azerbaijani community.

“We would like to remind that the core objective of the CSF is to establish mutual cooperation and understanding among the Civil Societies of the Eastern Partnership Member Countries in the best interest of our peoples. Unfortunately, the adoption of such a Draft Resolution within the CSF platform would lead to dissatisfaction among Azerbaijani government and society representatives, undermining the credibility of the Forum,” reads the statement.

The 10th Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum Annual Assembly will take place in Tbilisi on 10-12 December. This annual event brings together civil society organizations from all six Eastern Partner countries and the EU. It has been organized every year since 2009.

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 24, ARMENPRESS. 2018 year will be the first during the last decades to be summed up with immigration instead of emigration, ARMENPRESS reports acting Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan said during the city-wide procession.

“All the experts say and the latest data show that for the first time in the last decades we will sum up 2018 year with immigration, rather than emigration. This is the first time during the last 15-20 years, maybe even 30 years. The Armenian people will live in their motherland free, happy and powerful”, Pashinyan said.

The acting Pm noted that a new stage of the revolution kicks off by the procession organized by him.

“Today we sum up a very important stage of the procession that kicked off on March 31, but we also start a new and much longer procession and that procession will be transferred from government to government, from generation to generation. This procession is dedicated to the eternity of the Armenian people, the Armenian statehood, and the eternity of the Republic of Armenia”, Pashinyan said.
