ArmInfo. The European Court of Human Rights has registered complaints from the lawyers of the second President of the Republic of Armenia, Robert Kocharian. This  is reported by a group of lawyers of the second president of the  Republic of Armenia.

According to the source, one of the complaints  concerns the second and third paragraphs of Article Six of the  European Convention, which provides for the presumption of innocence  and the right to defense, which, according to the lawyers,  were  violated. Another complaint concerned the election of an arrest  against Robert Kocharyan as a preventive measure.

The ECtHR secretariat informed Robert Kocharian's defense team that  the court would consider cases as soon as possible.

Note that Robert Kocharyan is accused under Art. 300.1 of the  Criminal Code of Armenia in overthrowing the constitutional system in  the framework of the criminal case on the dispersal of protest  actions on March 1, 2008. On December 7 last year, the Court of  Appeal upheld the verdict of the first instance for the arrest of the  2nd President of the Republic of Armenia Robert Kocharian. Without  waiting for the transfer of the verdict to the investigator, Robert  Kocharyan himself appeared in the "Kentron" penitentiary unit, where  he was later arrested. The office of the second president of Armenia  called the arrest a political vendetta. RPA, however, qualified it as  pressure from the current government on political opponents.

ArmInfo. In his speech in the courtroom, Robert Kocharian described in detail the situation that developed in Armenia on February 23, 2008. The lawyer of the second  president of Armenia Robert Kocharian Hayk Halumyan said this in a  conversation with journalists.

"The second president, in particular, noted that on these days  information was received that work was being conducted in the army so  that the military would join the demonstrators. Moreover, there were  also rumors that the deputy defense minister should join the  demonstrators Manvel Grigoryan, who was also the head of the  Yerkrapah union. After that, discussions began in the administration  of this union so that members of the union join the protesters.  Robert Kocharyan, in the current situation, invited the army  commander , and instructed the Minister of Defense Mikayel  Harutyunyan to ensure the neutrality of the army, "said Halumyan.

He said that Kocharyan, in his speech, stated that he had instructed  the minister that the army should not interfere in these processes.  Moreover, high-ranking officers, who were going to continue their  military service, had to remain aloof from the processes taking place  in the Yerkrapah union. As Halumian noted, otherwise, they could drop  out of the army.

"I would like to note that in his speech, Robert Kocharian also spoke  about the well-known order" 0038.  "The second president of Armenia  reiterated that, like any order of the Minister of Defense, this  order was neither during his presidency nor Levon's presidency  Ter-Petrosyan or Serzh Sargsyan have never been sent for coordination  with the head of state, "said Halumyan. He added that during the rule  of three Armenian presidents there was simply no need for such a law.  The second president of Armenia also noted in his speech: "There was  nothing bad in the order 0038, which could be held criminally  liable," Kocharian concluded.

It should be noted that in February 2008 it was expected that Deputy  Defense Ministers Manvel Grigoryan and Gagik Melkonyan would join the  opposition.

'Pope's visit to shine light on UAE's coexistence'

by Binsal Abdul Kader, Senior Reporter

Head of Armenian Church praises UAE's initiatives for dialogue between different faiths

Waiting, preparing the way for Pope's visit to Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: The Pope's visit to the UAE from Sunday to Tuesday will prompt people of all faiths across the world to make the emirates a permanent pilgrim centre, demonstrating the peaceful coexistence of different religions in one society, according to the head of the Armenian Church in the UAE.

"The world should make the UAE a permanent pilgrim location for all faiths to mark respect for the country's religious tolerance," Bishop Mesrob Sarkissian, Catholicosate Vicar in the UAE Armenian Church, told Gulf News.

The non-Catholic senior priest said the Pope's visit is a testimony to the UAE's successful initiatives for dialogue and interaction between two major monotheistic religions in the world.

"This shows the openness of the Muslim rulers of this country towards a top Christian spiritual leader," he added. "It further reinforces the UAE's status as an example for other Muslim countries as it shows, Muslims and Christians and people of many other faiths can live together in a peaceful society. That's why I said the UAE should be a new permanent pilgrim location for all faiths, let everyone from across the world come here and experience it."

The Armenian church in the UAE has two centres of worship, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, catering to around 12,000 Armenians. Belonging to the Orthodox family, the church's supreme head is the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia, based in Antelias, Lebanon.

"We have historical links with the Pope. Therefore, the Pope's visit is important to us," he added. "This visit will enhance our good relationship with our Muslim brothers, and I am sure that this will inspire local people to know more about Christian culture, further strengthening our coexistence in a tolerant society."

Personally, the bishop said he was very excited, as he will be meeting Pope Francis for the third time.

"This is the most important occasion in my six years living here in the UAE," he said.

Sarkissian attended meetings with the Pope in the Vatican in 2014 and in Armenia in 2016.

"I was very surprised to experience Pope Francis' humility and ability to touch the hearts of people he meets. He is the people's Pope," he said of those two previous meetings. "Even as clergy belonging to the Orthodox family, we have a lot to learn from the Pope by taking examples from him."

For the Armenian community, this is an occasion to express their gratitude to the UAE leadership.

"Since we started coming here in the 1960s, we have enjoyed the openness and multicultural education system introduced by the government. They accepted us with love and tolerance. They went further and gave land and permitted us to build churches for our religious practice."

The first Armenian Church was opened in Sharjah in 1998 and the second one was opened in Abu Dhabi in 2014.

"It's a great opportunity to live in a Muslim country with all the facilities to worship our God in our own churches," he said. "This is possible because leaders of this country are open to other religions, while keeping their own faith. That's why their tolerant image has gained worldwide attention."

BERLIN, February 1. /TASS/. Resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh issue requires much time and both parties to the conflict must be ready to search for a solution, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a joint press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Friday.

"There is no way that only one party shows goodwill, it should come from both parties," Merkel said. "I think there is a long road ahead. We believe that the Minsk process should continue and the OSCE should have opportunities to use its tools," she added.

Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

The highland region of Nagorno-Karabakh (or Mountainous Karabakh) is a mostly Armenian-populated enclave inside Azerbaijan’s territory. It is a self-proclaimed independent republic, not recognized by any of the United Nations member states

In 1988, hostilities broke out there between the forces reporting to the Baku government and Armenian residents. In 1994, a ceasefire was reached but relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia has remained strained ever since.

Azerbaijan insists that its territorial integrity be restored and refugees return to Nagorno-Karabakh, which will create conditions for talks on the region’s status. Baku is ready to grant autonomy to the region but is unwilling to hold direct talks with Nagorno-Karabakh. At the same time, Armenia strongly opposes the region’s reunification with Azerbaijan and says that its right to self-determination should be considered.

Russia, France and the United States co-chair the OSCE Minsk Group, which seeks to broker an end to the conflict. The Group also includes Azerbaijan, Armenia, as well as Belarus, Germany, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland and Turkey.
