Regarding Vugar Gurbanov's Jan. 26 letter "The real discontent is in Armenia":

How remarkable. A counselor for the Embassy of Azerbaijan criticized the lack of attention to the democratic change in Armenia while noting that Azerbaijan has dropped all new charges against Azerbaijani blogger Mehman Huseynov – bogus charges that had led to hunger strikes against continued violations of his (and others') human rights.

As Panorama.am leant from Theatre Director Vardan Mkrtchyan the new modern stage will open in an adjacent building of the theatre that has been completely reconstructed in line with modern standards.

“This huge theatre cannot have simply one stage as it will ultimately lead to stagnation, while small theatre stages may serve as practice spaces for experiments, new ideas and prospects,” Mkrtchyan said.

Referring to the specifics of the black box theatre, Mkrtchyan noted that the staging director himself decides the number of spectators and the setup at a performance. In the words, the new space of the Sundukyan theatre is designed to accommodate around 150-200 people.  To note, one feature of the black box theatre is  that in the case of experimental performances, unusual arrangements of seating and stage can be offered.

Music: Paris bids farewell to the legendary Michel Legrand

PanArmenian, Armenia
Feb 2 2019

PanARMENIAN.Net – The legendary French-Armenian film composer Michel Legrand was laid to rest Friday, February 1 after a final standing ovation in a Paris theatre decorated to look like one of his favourite movies, AFP reports.

The musician who scored such French screen classics as "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and "The Young Ladies of Rochefort" — both starring Catherine Deneuve and directed by Jacques Demy — died on Saturday aged 86.

Legrand won three Oscars for his work in Hollywood, most famously for writing "The Windmills of Your Mind" for "The Thomas Crown Affair" in 1969, as well as the music for Barbra Streisand's "Yentl" (1984) and the "Summer of '42" (1972).

A magic forest reminiscent of another Demy film, "Donkey Skin" — which also starred Deneuve — was created inside the Marigny theatre in Paris where his coffin was taken after a funeral service at the Alexander Nevsky Russian Orthodox cathedral.

Clearly on the verge of tears, Demy's widow, the legendary French director Agnes Vardy, led the moving tributes to Legrand at the theatre.

After the audience had risen to give him one last standing ovation, she said, "Having to talk next to Michel's coffin is a little difficult. The last time we saw each other we held each other's hands and I felt transported back to our years together with Jacques Demy."

The cream of the French music and showbiz worlds had earlier crowded into the church, with Deneuve recalling the genius and energy of the man, who was planning a concert tour for April when he died suddenly.

"We could feel the emotion that was coming straight from the music when we were recording 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg'," she told French television on Thursday.

"I can still remember entire passages of the lyrics" from the hugely influential musical, in which every line was sung.

Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, was among the mourners, with Legrand taken from the theatre for burial at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in the east of the city.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo had a giant screen set up outside the city's town hall to show the highlights of Legrand's seven-decade career.

A musical prodigy, Legrand worked with the greats of jazz and popular music on both sides of the Atlantic from Miles Davis, Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra to Charles Trenet and Edith Piaf.

Born into a musical family near Paris, he started out by playing songs on the piano he had heard on the radio.

His father Raymond Legrand was a composer, and although he left the family home when his son was only three, he later helped him launch his career.

His mother, of Armenian origin, enrolled him at the Paris Conservatory at the age of 10. He was to spend seven years there, before graduating with top honours in 1949.

ISESCO condemns Armenia’s move to build a water canal in occupied territories of Azerbaijan

Rabat, February 2, AZERTAC

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) has issued a statement condemning Armenia’s move to build a water canal from Sarsang Reservoir in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

The statement describes the Republic of Armenia’s move to build a new canal from the Sarsang Reservoir which is located in Azerbaijani territories occupied by Armenia as a flagrant violation of the international law since the construction of such canal will cause floods in winter and droughts in summer in lower Karabakh and the adjacent regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and endanger the safety and security of their populations.

ISESCO Director General Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri said that Armenia’s expansionist plan aims to alter the situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and loot the natural resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, ISESCO Member State. He further qualified it as a violation of private and public property rights and of the international law, namely the Fourth Geneva Convention which calls the “occupying power to provide protection to civilians in the territories under occupation”. ISESCO Director General called on the international community and the international human rights organizations to act swiftly to force Armenia to give up its expansionist plan that is designed to promote its economy through exploiting Azerbaijan’s natural resources and continue its policy of ethnic cleansing, and urge it to immediately withdraw from the Azerbaijani territories it occupies to protect international peace and security in this important region of the world.

Turkish Press: Turks in Los Angeles targeted in new smear campaign

Unidentified man in Los Angeles caused tension between Armenian and Turkish communities, investigation underway

ANKARA

Turks in Los Angeles slammed a smear campaign against Turkey and the Turkish community by the Armenian diaspora after an unidentified man hung Turkish flags on the premises of Armenian schools.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has been investigating the matter since Tuesday in a bid to find the masked man in black who erected the flags at Manoogian-Demirdjian School in Canoga Park, a small city in northern Los Angeles.

Flags were allegedly also found at Holy Martyrs Ferrahian High School, another Armenian school nearby.

Both schools are located in San Fernando Valley area which is close to the city of Glendale, a stronghold of Armenians with almost no Turkish presence.

The senseless act by the unidentified man has concerned both Armenians and Turks living in the U.S. state for decades.

The Armenian diaspora jumped to conclusions and rushed to blame Turks, even though the police has not yet identified the person's ethnicity in the video footage.

Mayor Eric Garcetti tweeted about the incident and urged the police to find the perpetrator as soon as possible.

Congressmen and state senators who rely on Armenian votes in their districts have also rushed to linking this act to the so-called Armenian genocide.

The Turkish community in Los Angeles has denied any involvement and rejected Armenian allegations.

The Turkish Consulate in Los Angeles in a statement to Anadolu Agency called the defamation campaign against Turkey "unacceptable".

“Despite the history of terrorist attacks against our diplomats in Los Angeles and the subsequent hate incidents, which targeted the Turkish American interests, the Turks of this city have always acted with great restraint and refrained from acts that would undermine their relations with the Armenian community," said the statement.

Armenian terrorist organizations like ASALA and Justice Commandoes for Armenian Genocide have committed 699 terrorist acts across the world against Turkish diplomats and civil servants.

One of the victims was Los Angeles Consul General Kemal Arikan who was killed in 1982 by an Armenian JCAG terrorist, Hampig Sassounian.

He is currently in an American prison serving a life sentence.

"Premature statements that prejudge the outcome of the ongoing investigation into the recent events are unsettling for the Turkish Americans, who have no interest in provoking any other community in Los Angeles. The recent joint statement issued by the members of the Turkish community articulates their reaction towards the recent events," concluded the statement of the Turkish Consulate.

A joint statement by the representatives of several Turkish civil society organizations also denounced Armenian allegations and called for calm.

"We firmly believe that what happened earlier this week was not an act of a Turkish-American. We condemn the person behind this provocative act which caused an unnecessary alarm in both communities," said their statement.

Urging LAPD and other agencies to "investigate diligently and catch the perpetrator", the Turkish community leaders extended an olive branch to the Armenian community:

"We wish and seek peaceful dialogue between the two communities, not hostile polarization and intimidation."
