Erdogan Legalizes Drugs Contrary to his Islamic Faith

Harut Sassounian

BY HARUT SASSOUNIAN

Pinar Tremblay, a Turkish reporter for Al-Monitor news website, exposed Pres. Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent announcement to legalize the plantation of cannabis.

Tremblay wrote in the January 24, 2019 issue of Al-Monitor that the Turkish leader has been an outspoken opponent of selling or using alcohol, tobacco, and drugs due to his Islamic beliefs, however, he has now decided to advocate the plantation of cannabis in order to boost the country’s failing economy and provide farmers with additional income on the eve of municipal elections in Turkey.

Tremblay explained that for decades the Turkish government burned cannabis fields using the excuse that this was a fight against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Erdogan is now presenting the plantation of cannabis as resistance to the West!

“Drug wars are enforced with harsh punishment for users and dealers. [Turkish] government spending to prosecute drug dealers has gradually increased, reaching up to $140 million. That is precisely why Erdogan’s advocacy for cannabis cultivation in his campaign speeches surprised audiences,” wrote Tremblay.

The Turkish government relaxed restrictions on planting hemp since 1990. The Parliament adopted even more liberal laws in September 2016. “It is already legal to grow hemp in 19 cities, but you need government permits,” according to Tremblay.

Erdogan has suddenly realized that there is a big profit to be made by the cultivation of marijuana, at a time when the Turkish economy is sinking. As the saying goes, “desperate times call for desperate measures!” On January 9, 2019 Erdogan criticized the “enemies of Turkey who pretend to be friends,” stating that they have forced Turkey to end its cannabis production. Amusingly, Erdogan recalled that in his ancestral hometown of Rize the locals used to make underwear from hemp which is more absorbent than any other material!

According to Tremblay, most Turks interpreted Erdogan’s statement “‘enemies who pretend to be friends’ as a reference to the United States, which pressed to ban opium poppy production in 1971. Up until then, Turkey was a major producer of legal opium, but farmers were known to produce also significant amount of the plants illegally. Currently, Turkey has one alkaloid processing plant in Central Anatolian province of Afyon, which means ‘opium’ in Turkish. Afyon is known for its high-quality poppy seed production. The factory produces ingredients to be used in prescription drugs.”

The Turkish media began obediently promoting Erdogan’s declaration about the benefits of cannabis production to the health sector and the economy. Sabah newspaper even wrote about the use of hemp by the Ottoman Turkish Navy.

“Turkish government television TRT started airing infomercials about cannabis while referring to it as an ‘Anatolian plant’ and elaborating on countless uses of hemp. Islamist media particularly was quite eager to back Erdogan. For example, Mehmet Toprak, a columnist for Dirilis Postasi, wrote a piece titled ‘Cannabis will make the US dollar weapon explode in their own hands.’ Toprak emphasized that ‘President Erdogan’s decision on cannabis production is a turning point in our history. It is as revolutionary as the July 15 [2016 failed coup] victory. This decision shows us how crucial it is to stand behind Erdogan for the future of our country and the Muslim lands,’” Tremblay reported. “Cannabis production is now presented as a form of national resistance to the West,” stated a Turkish Agriculture Ministry official.

However, several Turkish agricultural experts warned that the production of cannabis could have an adverse effect on the growth of food items. One government employee, an expert in this field, was quoted by Tremblay stating: “food prices have skyrocketed, particularly in the last year. For example, onion [which is a staple ingredient for most recipes in Turkish cuisine] prices went up 185% in 2018. While its population is increasing, Turkey is producing fewer basic crops like wheat, barley, chickpeas, beets, beans and potatoes now than it did five years ago. Plus, cotton and flax production, just like hemp, has been decreasing in volume gradually over the last 15 years. This can be blamed on the government’s lack of planning for the impact of climate change on crops; its policies to lift tariffs on these goods, encouraging cheaper imports; and the rise in pesticide and fertilizer prices, making production more expensive. The government has failed to support farmers almost every step of the way, leaving them alone to the whim of the weather, cheap exports and inadequate storage disasters.”

Another expert at an Istanbul university told Tremblay: “These great promises on cannabis cultivation as a form of ultra-nationalistic stand against the West are exciting for the crowds … but how about other staple goods people need to survive? The arable land and number of farming families are dwindling. In 2017, meat [red and white] consumption in Turkey per person was averaging around 30 kilograms. In the European Union, that average is almost 70 kilos per person. We are much more dependent on grains and vegetables in our diet. Now if we switch to cannabis, what will people eat?”

Lydian Announces Updates for Hydrogeological Survey and Amulsar Project Audit

Lydian Announces Updates for Hydrogeological Survey and Amulsar Project Audit

TORONTO, Jan. 29, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Lydian International Limited (TSX:LYD) (“Lydian” or the “Company”) today announced the following updates.

Hydrogeological Survey

Lydian is pleased to announce the conclusion of an isotopic investigation of groundwater systems at the Company’s gold project at Amulsar (the “Amulsar Project”) and the Jermuk area (the “Hydrogeological Survey”).

In November 2018, work was commissioned in response to technical questions raised by interested parties. Twenty-five samples were collected from specific sampling points in the Amulsar and Jermuk areas. The samples were collected in the presence of agency representatives of the government of the Republic of Armenia. Lydian’s samples were analyzed by an internationally accredited laboratory (ALS (Czech Republic)) and the data was interpreted by Golder Associates’ (U.K.) principal hydrogeologist whose conclusion stated the following:

“the chemistry of the waters of the Jermuk thermal springs and minerals water boreholes are characteristic of hydrothermal waters based on their major and minor ion chemistry and environmental isotopic characteristics. The hydrothermal waters have an enriched d13C signature, along with clear differentiation with respect to d180 and d2H, d34S, 87Sr/86Sr and gross alpha and beta activity, which is clearly distinct from the surface water and shallow groundwater sampled and consistent with a separate flow regime of hydrothermal origin. This water type is not similar to groundwater encountered in the vicinity of Amulsar mountain and supports the conclusion that the groundwater system of Amulsar mountain is a distinct hydrogeological system to the Jermuk hydrothermal system. In summary, based on the data and analysis of the groundwater regime presented in the 2016 ESIA for the Amulsar Gold Project, combined with the major ion and isotope data presented in this memorandum it may be concluded that the Jermuk thermal mineral water system is not in hydraulic connection with shallow groundwater and surface water on the Amulsar mountain.”

The results of the Hydrogeological Survey confirmed the findings of Lydian’s previous work in 2013 and support the findings of the Amulsar Project’s Environmental Impact Assessment (“EIA”) and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (“ESIA”), conclusively demonstrating that there is no hydraulic connection between the groundwater regimes at the Amulsar Project and Jermuk.

The investigation was designed to develop and expand the data collected for the project in 2013 as part of the then baseline studies and to determine whether there was any hydrogeological connection between Amulsar and Jermuk water systems. The analyses on representative water samples were performed by the Jones Environmental Laboratory (UK) in 2013 and interpreted by Golder Associates (UK).

Lydian reiterates that the Amulsar Project is designed and developed following industry best practices to ensure the mine would not have an adverse impact on any surrounding water systems. The Hydrogeological Survey clearly concludes that the Amulsar and Jermuk water systems are not connected.

Amulsar Project Audit Update

Lydian Armenia CJSC (“Lydian Armenia”) has received formal notification from the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia that pursuant to the criminal investigation into alleged withholding of information by employees of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, an international consultancy group, Earth Link, and Advanced Resources Development (“ELARD”) has been selected to review all subject matter covered by Lydian’s EIA/ESIA, to determine the possibility of harmful impacts by the Amulsar Project and the validity of preventative and mitigation measures. However the contract award to ELARD is subject to state funding and therefore the audit start date has not yet been announced. The audit is expected to take up to 12 weeks to complete.

The following terms of reference were given to ELARD:

Water resources impact assessment;
Geology impact assessment;
Biodiversity impact assessment;
Air quality impact assessment; and
Unprejudiced clarification of technical issues raised by the decision to commission a complex expert examination.

Lydian is confident that the audit will conclude that the EIA/ESIA documents are valid and could serve as a blueprint for future projects in Armenia.

In anticipation of this investigation, Lydian completed the Hydrogeological Survey, a study of regional water resources to expand on work carried out in 2013. The Hydrogeological Survey concluded there was no hydrogeological connectivity between the water regime at the Amulsar Project and the groundwater of Jermuk.

Illegal blockades have prevented Lydian from accessing the Amulsar Project site to perform construction and associated work since late June 2018. The newly elected government of the Republic of Armenia has recently publicly announced their intolerance of illegal road blockades and has committed to its application of the “rule of law” to remove such blockades. Under this announced commitment, Lydian expects the Armenian government to apply the rule of law by permanently removing the road blockades to the Amulsar Project and to allow Lydian to fully resume its work on the Amulsar Project site in accordance with the permits the Company holds. Until Lydian is able to resume construction and associated work at the Amulsar Project, the Company will continue to evaluate a range of financing, strategic and legal alternatives.

Official: Radical opposition ready to turn Azerbaijan into Syria

Date

  • (MENAFN – AzerNews) By Trend

    The elements that fulfill the orders of foreign anti-Azerbaijan centers are engaged in destroying the country from inside, striving to find peace in the "passion for rallies", Vugar Rahimzade, a member of the Political Council of the New Azerbaijan Party, chief editor of the Iki Sahil newspaper, told Trend.

    "These people, who do not have social support, authority in society, each time under the pretext of holding rallies gather 3-5 people around themselves, put forward slogans based on the 'theses of foreign sponsors and thus once again demonstrate their disgraceful position," Rahimzade said.

    Commenting on the opposition rally on Jan. 19, he noted that this show demonstrates its weakness, the lack of support from the Azerbaijani people.

    He added that the true goal of such elements is to get grants from the Armenian lobby and anti-Azerbaijan forces.

    "For this purpose, they lie a lot, changing masks one by one. However, people are already tired of the slogans, speeches of these destroyers, their senseless and deceitful promises that have not changed for 25 years now," Rahimzade said.

    He also said that one of the 'missions of these destroyers is to seem 'heroic on social networks and do things that they cannot do in real life.

    "On one of the pages on social networks, the rally of Jan. 19 is presented as "great heroism". But people cannot be deceived by this kind of lie. Observations show that the rally on Jan. 19, as usual, is remembered as unsuccessful," he said.

    He noted that in order to fulfill orders received from abroad, these destroyers are even ready to turn Azerbaijan into Syria, Libya and other countries where there is confrontation between citizens.

    "Naturally, the Azerbaijani state, its leadership and the people have never allowed and will not allow these dirty intentions to be embodied. The destroyers themselves have only listened to their lies, the empty promises they have been making for 25 years," he added.

    Rahimzade also said the destroyers' attempt to come to the Martyrs' Alley on Jan. 20 and arrange outrage instead of paying tribute to the martyrs testifies to the lack of self-esteem among those persons.

    The radical opposition, organizing a political show on Jan. 20, showed disrespect for the martyrs who fell for the freedom of the country, he added.

    “I’d like to talk about something that has become an issue in Armenian football: the absence of a limit on foreign players. I know that many Armenian players agree with me on this. We touched on the subject many times, and we believe it is a serious problem,” Ghazaryan said in a Facebook post.

    He stressed that the demand for Armenian players is decreasing in Armenian clubs, although they are supposed to be the future of football in the country.

    “Good foreign players are important for any league, but there should be a limit so that Armenian footballers get the opportunity to show their quality and exchange experience,” he added.
