Thousands marched for slain journalist Hrant Dink in Istanbul

Thousands of protesters marked the 12th anniversary of a Turkish-Armenian journalist's murder on Saturday as outrage continues to grow over a trial which failed to shed light on alleged official negligence or even collusion, Turkish news site Diken reported.

Jan. 19 marks the 12th anniversary of prominent Armenian-Turkish journalist, the editor-in-chief of Istanbul-based Agos newspaper Hrant Dink's murder.

Protesters and human rights activists placed red carnations on the spot where Dink was gunned down in daylight by a teenage gunman in Istanbul, outside of his minority Agos newspaper.

Many carried black banners that read "We are all Hrant, we are all Armenian" and "We want justice", as they did in the previous eleven commemorations.

Filiz Ali, daughter of slain writer Sabahattin Ali, made a commemoration speech at the ceremony.

"In 1948, on a snowy morning, my father Sabahattin Ali, took his way to Istanbul from Ankara after he shot a few photos of my mother and me. And he never came back. The killer, who said he murdered my father due to 'nationalist feelings', was not different from the man who posed with a Turkish flag after killing you," Filiz Ali said.

"Dear Hrant, despite all difficulties, we are not hopeless. There are still people who do not remain silent. We are not going anywhere, and we are not giving up…These lands, this country is ours!" Ali concluded.

Dink, a Turkish citizen of Armenian heritage, was outspoken about Armenian issues; he was prosecuted three times for violating Article 301 of the Turkish penal code, which makes it a crime to insult Turkishness, the Turkish nation, or Turkish institutions. Dink spent his career challenging the intolerance behind such statutes, becoming a champion of minority rights in a country where such causes are punishable.

At the doors of Agos offices, 12 years ago, on Jan. 19, 2007, teenager Ogün Samast shot Dink at close range as he was returning to work.

The murder instantly became a symbol of the racism and ultranationalism grinding at the core of Turkish society, a war against freedom of _expression_, and the complacency of Turkey’s intellectuals.

Since Dink’s murder, the movement called "We Want Justice" which demands a fair trial for Dink's murder case, has grown and become more complex, bringing together Turkish liberals, Armenians, journalists, Kurds and Alevis, and women and members of the LGBTI community—basically all marginalised minorities in Turkey.

Armenian Church in Holy Land celebrates latest Christmas in the world

By Jeremy Sharon
The Armenian Christian community in Israel celebrated Christmas on Friday night and Saturday with the traditional procession from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, headed by Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem Archbishop Nourhan Manougian.

The Armenian Christian community in the Holy Land is the only community to celebrate Christmas on January 18 and 19 due to historical differences with other Orthodox denominations, which celebrate on January 6 and 7.

On Friday, Manougian led the vehicular procession from the Armenian Patriarchate in the Old City of Jerusalem to the Mar Elias Monastery in the south of the city, followed by some 450 pilgrims, including a group from Turkey, as well as priests, seminarians and other officials.

There they were greeted by the deputy mayor of Bethlehem, the mayors of nearby Beit Jala and Beit Sahur, mukhtars of Bethlehem and notables of the Armenian community, and then continued on to Bethlehem.

After the Solemn Entry ceremony of the archbishop and the procession into Bethlehem, where they were greeted by the mayor of Bethlehem and a scout troop, they made there way to Manger Square, and from there to the Armenian convent in the city where Manougian received officials from the Armenian church in Bethlehem.

The Christmas service took place at night in the Church of the Nativity and at midnight, the patriarch went to the Grotto of the Nativity to read the gospel and gave his Christmas sermon.

On Sunday, the Armenian Patriarchate will celebrate Epiphany, which for Eastern Christians celebrates the baptism of Jesus, at the Qasr el-Yahud site on the River Jordan in the West Bank.

TBILISI, January 19. /TASS/. Georgia expects to complete talks on a new deal with Gazprom on the transit of Russian gas to Armenia within the coming two weeks, Georgian Economy and Sustainable Development Minister George Kobulia told reporters on Saturday.

"At present, we are discussing the terms of reaching a new agreement on the transit of the Russian gas to Armenia. The terms of the previous contract [expired on December 31, 2018] will remain in force pending the end of those negotiations," he said. "After the talks with Gazprom, which are expected to be completed within the coming two weeks, we will make their results public,"

Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze said on January 18 that his country was not planning to give up its role of a transit nation for Russian gas supplies to Armenia.

Prior to January 2017, Georgia received 10% of the total volume of Armenia-bound Russian gas for its transit services. A new agreement with Gazprom, signed in early 2017, stipulated that the Russian side paid to Georgia for the transit with money and partially with gas in 2017, and only with money in 2018.

The days when Azerbaijani authorities are traditionally engaged in inciting hatred toward the Armenians as a part of their propaganda stunt called “the anniversary of the January 20 tragedy”, a protest rally is held at Mehsul Stadium organized by the National Council of Democratic Forces.

Activists of the Popular Front Party, Musavat and REAL take part in a protest rally demanding the release of blogger Mehman Huseynov and all other political prisoners.

The police are taking heightened security measures and three cordons are checking for those who come to the rally, contact.az reported.

As usual, the authorities are blocking access to the Internet at the venue of the rally in order to prevent live transmission to social networks.

Azerbaijani authorities force their population to mark the anniversary of the “January 20 tragedy” on January 19-20.  On the night of January 20, 1990, units of the Soviet Army entered Baku in order to stop the mass pogroms of the local Armenian population, which had already spread to the Russian residents of the city. The organizers and participants of the Armenian pogroms in Azerbaijan have been declared “fighters for the territorial integrity and independence of the motherland.” Those of them who died as a result of troops were buried in the “Alley of the shekhids”, where crowds of officials and employees of state institutions, students and schoolchildren are driven every year. The authorities are completely silent about the fact that the troops were deployed to stop the Armenian pogroms.

15:25,

YEREVAN, JANUARY 19, ARMENPRESS.  Turkish novelist and playwright Adalet Ağaoğlu sent an exciting letter to Hrant Dink’s family and “Agos” newspaper on the occasion of the 12th anniversary of Dink’s murder. ARMENPRESS presents the letter pusblished in Agos.

‘'Family of my much beloved Hrant Dink, 'Agos' periodical…

Hrant Dink, my brother, I do not forget you even for a second. I remember you alive during the conferences on peace, standing together with us. It was important that an open-minded person, who is opposed to violence and stands for peace like you talked about such topics. I do not forget for a minute. You talked so beautifully that, believe me, every time I wanted to hug you with enthusiasm. It's a pity, great pity. Violence took you away from us. I have always been against violence, but when we lost you as a result of violence, my convictions reinforced.

Dear Hrant, when once I heard that you were taken to the court I immediately came in front of ‘Agos’. I was shouting ‘I will not give you to anyone’. We together were trying to prevent your imprisonment. What a pity you fell victim to violence. I miss you very much, Hrant Dink.

My Hrant Dink. I and my husband bowed in front of your memory and greatness. I lost my husband who respected you very much in July. So I became even smaller, but I still resist. The best thing I can do for the memory of both of you is that I do not abandon my own ideas and moving forward along my own path’'.
