Hendrik Daems elected new PACE President

YEREVAN, JANUARY 27, ARMENPRESS. Hendrik Daems, a Belgian Senator, has been elected as the new President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for a one-year term, PACE said on Twitter.

He was the only candidate running for the position.

“I want to sincerely thank you for your trust”, he said at the PACE session, expressing hope that during his tenure he will manage to visit all member states of PACE.

Catholicos of All Armenians receives President of Supreme Judicial Council

YEREVAN, JANUARY 27, ARMENPRESS. His Holiness Garegin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, received today President of the Supreme Judicial Council Ruben Vardazaryan at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the SJC told Armenpress.

His Holiness Garegin II wished that God supports the SJC President and Council members in fulfilling the key mission to establish justice. The Supreme Patriarch said at all times the humanity has strived for fair and true justice, and in this context the Supreme Judicial Council has a key role to play.

In his turn Ruben Vardazaryan thanked for the reception and introduced His Holiness Garegin II on the ongoing actions and the goals set by the Council.

Armenian MFA spox releases comment on implementation period following Brexit

YEREVAN, JANUARY 27, ARMENPRESS. Spokeswoman of the foreign ministry of Armenia Anna Naghdalyan issued a comment on the implementation period following Brexit (the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union).

“In accordance with the revised Withdrawal Agreement and Political Declaration agreed at the European Council on 17 October 2019, the UK and the EU concurred that existing international agreements would continue to apply for the duration of the transition period from the entry into force of the Withdrawal Agreement until the end of December 2020.

The Government of the Republic of Armenia fully supports this continuity and is ready to grant reciprocal rights to the UK during the implementation period, having in mind the need to ensure stability and certainty in relations with the UK until the end of 2020”.

Situation in frontline in 2019 was quite calm, says Armenian defense minister

YEREVAN, JANUARY 27, ARMENPRESS. The session of the Board adjacent to the defense minister of Armenia was held on January 27 dedicated to the combat readiness of the Armed Forces in 2019, the results of combat service and the actions taken to further improve the moral-psychological condition within the troops, the defense ministry told Armenpress.

The session was also attended by the representatives of the commanding staff of Artsakh’s Defense Army.

In his opening remarks Defense Minister of Armenia Davit Tonoyan said the situation in the frontline in 2019 has been quite calm thanks to the efforts of the military-political leadership and the concrete strategy and actions of the armed forces. But he added that this is not enough and additional efforts are needed to further strengthen the combat preparedness of the troops and ensure the inviolability of borders.

Chief of General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General Artak Davtyan delivered a report at the session introducing the works done so far, the achievements and shortcomings. He informed that the upgrading works of new armament and military equipment continued with a large scale. The Armed Forces fulfilled their tasks at the highest level and managed to give counter response to the provocative actions of the adversary.

Defense Minister Tonoyan gave certain instructions and tasks on the upcoming activities.

At the end of the session several subdivisions and officers were awarded for their service.

Delegation of US Kansas National Guard to attend Armenian Army Day celebrations in Yerevan

YEREVAN, JANUARY 27, ARMENPRESS. Foreign Minister of Armenia Zohrab Mnatsakanyan received today the US delegation led by Kansas National Guard's Adjutant General, Major-General Lee Tafanelli, the MFA told Armenpress.

Welcoming the guests in Armenia the FM praised the fact that the US delegation is going to participate in the Armenian Army Day celebrations in Yerevan. The minister said during the course of years Armenia has established a firm partnering dialogue with the United States and is ready to continue making efforts to further strengthen and enrich the relations between the two peoples.

The officials exchanged views on the Armenian-American strategic dialogue, highlighting the importance of implementation of agreements reached recently.

As a key component of the bilateral agenda the sides outlined the development and expansion of decentralized cooperation. Both expressed readiness to take joint actions at traditional directions, such as peacekeeping, military medicine, etc. In this context the foreign minister highly valued the US contribution to the strengthening of Armenia’s peacekeeping capacities.

The minister also introduced the guests on the ongoing reforms of the Armenian government, highlighting the constant cooperation with the US partners in this process.

Armenia will celebrate the 28th anniversary of the establishment of the Armed Forces on January 28.

Maestro Tigran Mansurian celebrates 81st anniversary of birth

YEREVAN, JANUARY 27, ARMENPRESS. Concerts, tours, meetings, new works: Armenian renowned composer Tigran Mansurian’s creative life is full of events.

Today, on January 27, Maestro Mansurian is celebrating his 81st birthday, but his age doesn’t hinder the composer to continue actively working. From early morning Mansurian receives congratulations and birthday wishes. He says he will spend his day with family members and friends, but before that he gave a press conference today in ARMENPRESS to present his upcoming programs. He has just returned from abroad, this time his works were performed at a concert in the Czech Republic.

“My Requiem was performed for two days at the city of Brno. An amazing orchestra and choir were participating. Requiem has been performed in many countries of the world. But these two concerts received a particular welcome by the audience. I received a warm welcome by Armenian Ambassador Ashot Hovakimyan”, Mansurian said, adding that he also met with the Armenian community representatives and the Czech reporters.

Tigran Mansurian continues creating and performing his works in different stages of the world. As he describes, today he is engaged in a very heavy work which will be performed in Italy in autumn.

“It’s a great work for the orchestra, choir and soloist. This year the world’s cultural reality is celebrating the jubilee of Dante Alighieri. Proposals were made to three composers so that each of them will write one part of an overall work. The work consists of three parts – hell, purgatory and heaven. Purgatory part was proposed to me, and I agreed. I must complete my work by the end of March”, he said, adding that this work will be performed in three Italian citizens.

The composer informed that he also has other proposals, but still is thinking about them. Mansurian is going to pay much more place to the Armenian poetry in his works.

Changes expected in Police of Armenia, says Acting Police Chief

YEREVAN, JANUARY 27, ARMENPRESS. Changes are expected in the Police of Armenia, Acting Police Chief Arman Sargsyan told reporters at a briefing.

“We are going to have a new-quality police. On the sidelines of the judicial reforms the issue of making changes in the Police is also being discussed. The concept already exists, and I think that the changes will be visible”, he said.

The Acting Police Chief said these changes firstly relate to the formation of a new image of a police officer. The police officer should be more educated and be well aware of his duties and rights.

“Police is a living organism and is changing which is positive. I assure you that the work done with the citizen is going to be of new quality”, he said.

Leader of Bright Armenia Party Edmon Marukyan has been elected First Vice-Chairperson of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, one of the major committees of the PACE. This is what Edmon Marukyan wrote on his Facebook page.

Armenian ombudsman slams Yerevan councilman’s move against Hrayr Tovmasyan’s daughter

Armenia’s Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Arman Tatoyan has strongly condemned the move of Yerevan City Council member Henrik Hartenyan against Armenian top court head Hrayr Tovmasyan's daughter.

ArmDaily reported that Henrik Hartenyan, who represents the ruling My Step faction in the City Council, posted a photo of Sara Tovmasyan user in a Facebook story, adding that the account belongs to the daughter of Constitutional Court Chairman Hrayr Tovmasyan.

“Period, folks!” he added to the story.

“In general, I strongly urge anyone holding public office to clearly understand his/her official status and act exclusively within that status, displaying a proper conduct. You are restricted to your official status,” the ombudsman said in a statement.

“No one has the right to target [an official’s] family life and especially children whether or not the case refers to the official's family.

“I urge our compatriots using social media to show respect for each other, respect each other's opinion, dignity, personal and family life,” Tatoyan said.

In a statement on Sunday, the My Step faction said it “strongly condemns any manifestation of hate speech.”

“Please accept our apologies for the incident. Tomorrow, the My Step faction of the Yerevan City Council will convene an emergency meeting, after which it will issue a statement,” the statement read.
