Turkey on Monday commemorated the assassination of Consul Gen. Mehmet Baydar and Consul Bahadır Demir in Los Angeles, who were assassinated by an Armenian terrorist in the U.S. on Jan. 27, 1973.

"We remember with respect our martyrs Mehmet Baydar, Consul General, and Bahadır Demir, Consul in Los Angeles, assassinated by an Armenian terrorist in the #USA on 27.01.1973." the Foreign Ministry said in a tweet.

Baydar and Demir were the first Turkish diplomats who were killed by Armenian terrorists.

These attacks were just two of the many assassinations of Turkish diplomats and family members around the world by the Armenian terror groups, the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) and Justice Commandos of the Armenian Genocide (JCAG).

Founded in 1975 in Beirut, Lebanon, during the Lebanese Civil War, ASALA is responsible for hundreds of bloody terror acts.

According to Armenian Terror – a 2006 study by Ömer Engin Lütem, a former Turkish diplomat – the killings spanned continents, taking place in the U.S., Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Lebanon, Greece, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, Portugal, Iran and the U.K.

Though the group formed in 1975, the first killing of a diplomat and his deputy came on Jan. 27, 1973, when Gourgen Yanikian, an Armenian, assassinated Baydar, and his aide, Demir.

A total of three diplomats were killed between 1973 and 1978, after which Turkish public servants abroad became targets for Armenian terrorist organizations like ASALA and JCAG.

While Marxist-Leninist ASALA not only targeted Turkey but also other countries and became infamous for a 1975 bombing on the Beirut office of the World Council of Churches, the nationalistic JCAG only targeted Turkey because it believed that attacking other countries would damage the so-called "Armenian struggle."

Armenian terrorist attacks intensified from 1980 to 1983, when 580 of the 699 attacks – over 80% – occurred.

The attack at Esenboğa airport on Aug. 7, 1982, was one of the most notorious attacks by ASALA, as the group targeted non-diplomat civilians for the first time.

Nine people died and over 80 were injured when two terrorists opened fire in a crowded passenger waiting area at the airport in the Turkish capital Ankara.

The 1981 and 1983 Paris attacks are among the group's other notable acts. ASALA terrorists held 56 people hostage for 15 hours during the Turkish Consulate attack in 1981, while a suitcase bomb killed eight people – most of them non-Turks – in 1983 at a Turkish Airlines check-in desk at Paris's Orly Airport.

According to some Turkish officials, after the Orly attack, the group lost much of its support and financial backing from the Armenian diaspora and had to dissolve.

The terrorist attacks ended in 1986, according to the Armenian Terror study.

In order to compel the Turkish government "to acknowledge publicly its responsibility for the so-called Armenian genocide in 1915, pay reparations, and cede territory for an 'Armenian homeland'," ASALA and JCAG targeted Turkish diplomats in numerous bloody attacks in that decade.

In 1915, the Ottoman Empire relocated Armenians in eastern Anatolia following revolts when some sided with invading Russians, which resulted in some Armenian casualties.

Armenia has demanded an apology and compensation, while Turkey has officially refuted Armenian allegations over the incidents saying that, although Armenians died during the relocation, many Turks also lost their lives in attacks carried out by Armenian gangs in Anatolia.

The Turkish government has repeatedly called on historians to study Ottoman archives pertaining to the era in order to uncover what actually happened between the Ottoman government and its Armenian citizens.

Rebuffing the "genocide" allegations, Turkey has officially acknowledged past experiences as a great tragedy in which both parties suffered heavy casualties, including hundreds of Muslim Turks.

Commentary: A journey along Armenian Street in Singapore

People gather during a rally in Singapore in June 2013. “An in-depth look at Singapore’s history … reveals a history of civic and commercial involvement by Armenian merchants who helped to develop this Asian hub in earlier times,” writes Gus Gomez, who recently visited the island city-state in Southeast Asia.

Singapore visitors are impressed by the marvelous architecture of the Raffles Hotel in this island nation located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula.

An in-depth look at Singapore’s history also reveals a history of civic and commercial involvement by Armenian merchants who helped to develop this Asian hub in earlier times. This history is memorialized in part by the existence of Armenian Street in Singapore.

Some, guided by a spirit of travel and adventure, have come upon this jewel of knowledge entirely by chance, while others search for a better understanding of history.

The Republic of Singapore is a nation founded in the 1960s. It is, in fact, one large island in addition to several dozen smaller islets. Today, it is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in Asia, with a population just over 5 million.

In modern times, Singapore served as a trading post with the arrival of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles in the early 1800s. Singapore gained independence from Great Britain in 1963 along with Malaysia and became a sovereign nation in 1965.

Armenian Street in Singapore opened as Armenian Church Street sometime after the construction of the Armenian Apostolic Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator. The street is tucked between Coleman Street and Stamford Road.

Today, the street features galleries, restaurants and other attractions adjacent to the Singapore Art Museum just east of the Singapore River and Fort Canning, famous for Raffles House and Fort Canning lighthouse.

The Armenian population in Singapore is described as a small community numbering about 100 individuals at their peak in the 1920s. They were among the earliest merchants to arrive when Singapore was established as a trading post by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles.

The first Armenian settlers in Singapore were descendants of Armenian people who migrated from Persia. In the early 1800s, Armenian trading firms like Sarkies and Moses became more prominent in Singapore’s economy.

One merchant, Catchick Moses, co-founded the Straits Times. The newspaper went on to become the most prominent English language newspaper in Singapore.

Later, Agnes Joaquim cultivated a hybrid orchid flower which eventually became the national flower of Singapore. Her younger brother became a respected lawyer and served as president of Singapore’s town council.

In the 1880s, the Sarkies brothers founded the Raffles Hotel, now one of the most famous hotels in the world. Over the years, the grandest balls and banquets were hosted at Raffles, according to Australian author and historian Nadia H. Wright, who is of Armenian descent.

In total, about 830 Armenians lived in Singapore between 1820 and 2000, as noted in Wright’s book, “Respected Citizens: The History of Armenians in Singapore and Malaysia.” The Armenian community virtually disappeared by the 1970s. But the small Armenian diaspora’s contribution to business and cultural endeavors was significant.

As author Nadia H. Wright points out, every municipality has street names peculiar or unique to its history and culture. In Singapore, Armenian Street brings this point home, even as the city has transformed into a vibrant financial center in Asia.

Gus Gomez is a former mayor and councilman in Glendale and is now a Los Angeles Superior Court judge. He recently visited Singapore and came upon Armenian Street while exploring the city.

Hrayr Tovmasyan: The purpose of the authorities is to remove me from the post of head of the Constitutional Court

Arminfo, Armenia
Jan 24 2020

ArmInfo. The purpose of the authorities is to remove me from the head of the Constitutional Court. Head of the Constitutional Court of Armenia Hrayr Tovmasyan  stated this on January 24 in an interview with reporters, commenting  on the search in his apartment.

He noted that he was invited to interrogation several times. "Today,  when investigative actions began in my apartment, I requested that  during these actions a photo-video recording and sound recording be  carried out." The fact is that everything will not end with today's  search, this process will continue, and everything that happens will  fall into basis of new criminal cases. Therefore, I requested that  all actions be filmed. And I don't understand why the investigation  refuses to record the interrogations and the search of my apartment,  "Tovmasyan emphasized.

The head of the Constitutional Court said that by its actions the  government undermines the authority of the country. "The actions of  the authorities, carried out in my attitude, are very rude and not  covered up. I am very sorry that this happens, because for me the  most important thing is not my personal affairs, but the future of  the country. I would not want everything that we reached for many  years, in a few minutes it was nullified, "Tovmasyan stated.

In turn, Tovmasyan's lawyer Amram Makinyan stated that the search was  over, but nothing was found.

It should be noted that this morning the SIS reported that a search  was being conducted in the apartment of Hrayr Tovmasyan. However,   lawyer of Tovmasyan, Amram Makinyan, said in an interview with  reporters that the search was not carried out, since the rights of  his client and lawyers were violated, they were not allowed to  familiarize themselves with the court decision on the search.

Then, the SIS  denied the lawyer's statement, saying that the lawyers  and Tovmasyan were given the opportunity to familiarize themselves  with the court decision. "The persons participating in the search,  including lawyers, the investigator were given the opportunity to  familiarize themselves with the court's decision in accordance with  the criminal procedure law," the SIS statement emphasized.

To recall, Tovmasyan was charged under Article 308 of the Criminal  Code of the Republic of Armenia (abuse of power, resulting in  negligence with grave consequences, Ed). This is the same criminal  case in which the godson of Tovmasyan Norair Panosyan was indicted.

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 24

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Israel fully supports Azerbaijan's territorial integrity, Israeli Ambassador to Azerbaijan George Deek said at a press conference in Baku, Trend reports.

"We know what a conflict is, and we fully support the efforts of the countries of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," the ambassador said.

"Israel will support any agreement that will be reached between the two countries," said the Israeli ambassador.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
