Expert: No guarantees that Azerbaijan won’t attempt to repeat Baku pogroms

Factually, Azerbaijan remained unpunished for perpetrating the pogroms of Armenians in Baku, expert in Azerbaijani studies Anzhela Elibegova told a discussion on the 30th anniversary of the Baku pogroms on Monday.

“This means that we have no guarantees that they will not try to repeat it again,” she said.

Attending the discussion was former Armenian Ombudsman, Executive director of Foundation Against Violation of Law NGO Larisa Alaverdyan, who, according to Elibegova, participated in the swap of the prisoners of war, managed to negotiate with Azerbaijani officials in the most heated situation and talk about saving lives. Elibegova wondered if such a communication is possible today.

“Yes, I collaborated and held meetings, including on the hardest days of the war. At that time, the atmosphere of the meetings was completely different: we grew up watching the same cartoons, reading the same literature and studying at the same universities. We are representatives of the generation that did not have any problems with interpersonal communication. In this sense, these meetings in the humanitarian sphere yielded unprecedented outcomes,” Alaverdyan said.

She noted that the annual 5-6 meetings led to amazing results. Alaverdyan emphasized no Azerbaijani, not even the ones who had the greatest contribution to the humanitarian work, has never expressed thoughts on the Artsakh issue other than those expressed by the country’s authorities. “Moreover, Armenia is more free-thinking, the Armenian side presents its stance more freely,” she explained.

Commenting on the possibility of launching such a communication between the parties today, the ex-ombudsman said the settings for such contacts, including the atmosphere and the proper interpersonal relations, are absent today. “Welcoming all the meetings, I have never stated that meetings are not necessary,” she added.

Alaverdyan called for honesty by both parties in the event of such contacts,

“We need to be sober, clearly understand what such contacts can give, what not to expect from them and how important it's to be honest with one another,” she concluded.

Vice President of the Republican Party Galust Sahakyan had difficulty answering journalists’ questions about what could have caused the former director of the National Security Service, Georgi Kutoyan, to commit suicide. “Now is not the time to talk about whether it was a murder or suicide. When the investigation is finished, we will talk.”

When asked if he sees any connection between the deaths of former Police Chief Hayk Harutyunyan and Georgi Kutoyan, Sahakyan said, “People are saying different things. Some people are blaming the authorities. We are talking about what really happened. And I do not think that it’s the right time to wonder if their deaths are tied to one another.”

The funeral of former RA National Security Service Director Georgi Kutoyan took place in Yerevan, Armenia

When asked if he truly believes that law enforcement agencies will discover the circumstances of Kutoyan’s death, Sahakyan responded, “I don’t know what law enforcement agencies are being used, especially since law enforcement bodies are not working in Armenia.”

Galust Sahakyan gave a positive answer when he was asked if the law enforcement agencies were working when the RPA was in power. “Many small and large cases took place under our authority.”

During Georgi Kutoyan’s funeral service, Galust Sahakyan described him as being a very good-natured individual.

Third President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan was present at the funeral, but he did not wish to answer journalists’ questions. The President of the Constitutional Court Hrayr Tovmasyan, acting Director of the NSS Eduard Martirosyan, former Police Chief Vladimir Gasparyan, and other former officials were also present.

The body of former NSS Director Georgi Kutoyan was discovered with a gunshot wound on January 17th in one of the apartments on Paruyr Sevak Street in Yerevan. His wife found his body. A criminal case was opened on the grounds of suicide.

The Investigative Committee announced that there were no bruises or other marks on Kutoyan’s body to indicate physical violence. In order for several circumstances to be disclosed for the investigation, several examinations took place.

Music: German artist urges Azeri tenor to stop hating Armenians

PanARMENIAN.Net – Famous German operatic bass René Pape has weighed in on a scandal involving Azerbaijani tenor Yusif Eyvazov who reportedly made organizers of an event to force out Armenian soprano Ruzan Mantashyan with whom he was scheduled to perform.

“Usually I don’t comment on such things but as a Dresden native and as an ambassador of music, art and antiracism, I have to tell my esteemed colleague Yusif to not bring any hate into my town or somewhere else,” Pape said in a statement he sent to celebrated Armenian soprano Hasmik Papian.

“To be able to make music means to be able to build bridges, not to destroy them.”

In a statement, which Papian published on her Facebook page, the German artist reminded that Dresden has had a very bright and a very dark past, as well as a glorious musical history.

“To be invited to sing here and to make an audience happy is an honor and a privilege! You should be proud and happy to be asked to be a part of it,” pape said.

“You want to be remembered as an artist, not as a hater.”

According to earlier reports, Mantashyan was invited to perform at The Semper Opera Ball, a classical entertainment event in Dresden, Germany, alongside an American tenor. However, as the latter dropped out in the process, the opera house replaced him with Eyvazov. After realizing Mantashyan’s ethnicity, the Azerbaijani tenor reportedly refused to perform.

Opera singer Ruzan Mantashyan has issued a new statement about the cancelation of her participation in Semper Opera Ball in Dresden on February 7 because of the refusal of Azerbaijani opera singer Yusif Eyvazov to sing with an Armenian singer, "Armenpress'' reports.

In the statement René Massis, the representative of Ruzan Mantashyan urged chairman and artistic director of Dresden Opera Ball Hans-Joachim Frey to apologize from Ruzan Mantashyan.

''Dear Mister Frey,

One could think that you were forced to do so before the intransigence of your Guest Star. This is not what would have been desirable, but the facts are there: Ruzan Mantashyan has been withdrawn from the project.

The best attitude would have been, to say the least, to apologize to Miss Mantashyan.

In this case, we could have tried to overcome this lamentable situation.

You haven't even considered it necessary to establish a personal contact.
Instead, in your press release of January 15, you dismiss, in an arrogant and insulting tone, the concrete arguments we produce to back up the facts of our version.

By doing so, do you really want us to take another step and take this litigation to a further level ?'', reads the statement of René Massis, posted on Ruzan Mantashyan’s Facebook page.

There were media reports on January 13 that Azerbaijani opera singer Yusif Eyvazov had refused to sing with Armenian soprano Ruzan Mantashyan for ''political reasons''. The two singers were scheduled to sing together on February 7 at Semper Opera Ball in Dresden.

Later the Azerbaijani singer denied the accusations, publishing the statement of Semper Opera Ball, according to which the Opera Ball had no contract with the Armenian singer.

But back in December a statement had been issued, where Ruzan Mantashyan was mentioned as one of the singers. The final contract was not signed yet only for the reason that thgey negotiations were not over yet, but the agreement on the participation of the Armenian singer had been already reached.
