BAKU, January 17. /TASS/. Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev held talks by phone with Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Azerbaijani president’s press office said on Saturday.

"The heads of state spoke about the launch of the Turkish-Russian Joint Monitoring Center in Aghdam soon, noting that the operation of the Center will contribute to ensuring long-lasting peace," the statement says.

Aliyev informed Erdogan about the reconstruction work underway in the areas retaken by Baku and "hailed the Turkish companies' active involvement in this work."

"The Turkish President emphasized that his country would continue to support Azerbaijan. The head of state thanked the Turkish President for this," the statement reads.

On Friday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Turkey and Russia would field 60 service members each to work at the monitoring center.

On November 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on a complete ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh starting from November 10. Under the statement, the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides are to maintain the positions that they have held and then, Armenian forces are to turn over control of certain districts to Azerbaijan. In addition, Russian peacekeepers are to be deployed along the contact line and to the Lachin corridor, which links Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia. The memorandum on establishment of the Russian-Turkish monitoring center to control the ceasefire was signed on November 11 after the talks involving Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

Turkey: Germus, an ancient Armenian church used for a barbecue party

Germus, an ancient Armenian church used for a barbecue party

A man lit a fire and cooked kebabs in the church of the Virgin Mary in Germuş. The building dates back to the 1800s, but has been unavailable to Christians for over a cebtury, subject to excavations and looting. The condemnation of local groups and opposition deputies. In Turkey, hostility towards Armenia and the Armenians continues, considered unwanted neighbors, intensifies.

Istanbul (AsiaNews) – A man organized and publicized a barbeque inside the historic 19th century Armenian church of Sourp Asdvadzadzin, in the village of Germuş, 10 km north-east of Urfa, in southeastern Turkey. At the beginning of the 1900s the village was made up of more than a third of Christians, especially Armenians, later decimated by the genocide or emigrated abroad to save themselves from the slaughter.

The church of the Virgin Mary of Germuş is in ruins due to illicit excavations that have taken place for a long time in the area and for the looting carried out by bounty hunters looking for ancient treasures; for almost a century it has been unavailable to the local Christian community, which has repeatedly asked for its return to be restored and used again as a place of worship. The barbecue (in the photo) set up in recent days is just the latest example of the havoc that is taking place against the structure.

According to some testimonies and images posted on social media, a kebab seller cooked liver and served it to the people present "at the event". The "barbecue party", which had a wide echo among the internet users of the area, raised a wave of indignant comments, especially among Christians. Unanimous condemnations also come from local exponents of the pro-Kurdish opposition party HDP, including the Armenian-born MP Garo Paylan.

Some residents have appealed to the local administration and the central government to protect the historic church and return it to its original use, not to be used as a backdrop for a barbecue or parties of a different nature.

Ubeyit İnci, a local Christian, confirms that "we are devastated by the treasure hunters" who dig and plunder. "We protect – he adds – this cultural heritage with our efforts […] We want the church to be restored, protecting it from attacks by treasure hunters and the exploits of those who use it for different purposes".

It is another blow to the Christian community in Turkey’s history and traditions, after last year’s conversions to mosques of the ancient Christian basilicas – then museums in the early 1900s under Ataturk – of Hagia Sophia and Chora.

The controversial decisions were made in the context of the "nationalism and Islam" policy of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in an attempt to hide the economic crisis and maintain power. Following the presidential decree that decreed its transformation, the Islamic authorities covered the images of Jesus, frescoes and icons that testify to the Christian roots with a white curtain both in Chora and in Hagia Sophia.

The hostile climate towards Christians, especially Armenians, also emerges from the results of a survey entitled "Research on trends in Turkey", conducted by the Kadir Has University in Istanbul, according to which fewer and fewer people accept to have Armenian neighbors.

Furthermore, Armenia is considered among the first three nations in the world to pose a threat to the Turks. When asked "I don't want to be close to …", 47.6% of the respondents answered the Armenians, while the Greeks are in second place with 45.2%. Only 11.8% of the people interviewed agree to have Armenian neighbors.

Mobilization of foreign terrorist fighters in conflicts a new alarming trend, Armenia’s envoy to UN says

– Public Radio of Armenia

Armenia remains firmly committed to the global fight against terrorism and is actively engaged in international and regional activities aimed at the implementation of the counter-terrorism conventions and their additional protocols, as well as the relevant resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Mher Margaryan said at the UN Security Council VTC Meeting on “20th Anniversary of Resolution 1373 (2001) and the Establishment of the Counter-Terrorism Committee: Trends, challenges and opportunities.”

He stressed that mobilization of foreign terrorist fighters in conflicts represents a new alarming trend.

“Our region is not immune to the scourge of terrorism and its radical ideology and violent practices. Amidst the outbreak of an unprecedented global pandemic, on 27 September 2020 Azerbaijan, with the direct support of Turkey, employed thousands of foreign terrorists fighters in a large-scale military aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh),” Armrnia’s envoy to the UN said.

“The offensive led to massive loss of human life, displacement of tens of thousands of civilians, destruction and desecration of religious and cultural heritage and other gross violations of international human rights law and humanitarian law. The ISIL-style torture, inhuman treatment and executions of prisoners of war and civilian hostages by the Azerbaijani forces was widely disseminated and glorified in the media outlets and social networks,” he added.

Mr. Margaryan noted that “he recruitment of foreign terrorist fighters by Turkey from the Middle East and their transfer to Azerbaijan and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone is a well-established and documented fact, acknowledged by law enforcement agencies of several countries and extensively reported by independent observers.

“The UN Working Group on the use of mercenaries of the United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner in its Statement of 11 November 2020 has referred to “widespread reports that the Government of Azerbaijan, with Turkey’s assistance, relied on Syrian fighters to shore-up and sustain its military operations in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone, including on the frontline. The fighters appeared to be motivated primarily by private gain, given the dire economic situation in the Syrian Arab Republic. In case of death, their relatives were reportedly promised financial compensation and Turkish nationality,” the Ambassador stated.

“It is even more disturbing that the Syrian fighters deployed to Azerbaijan are allegedly affiliated with armed groups and individuals that, in some cases, have been accused of war crimes and serious human rights abuses during the conflict in Syria, thus seemingly perpetuating a cycle of impunity and risking further abuses of international law,” Mher Margaryan stated.

Anna Naghdalyan: The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is still far from being resolved,

Armenian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anna Naghdalyan on Friday reacted to the statement made by the representative of the Foreign Ministry of Russia who stated that the Russian side has always supported the implementation of the humanitarian contacts between the Armenian and Azerbaijani societies. Asked whether there are prerequisites for such programs, Naghdalyan said: "We highly commend Russia's efforts aimed at establishing peace and stability in the region. The Armenian side has always supported the humanitarian contacts between the societies of the region, which should be based on mutual respect and tolerance and be aimed at creating mutual trust. Certainly, relevant prerequisites should be established for such programs."

The Armenian diplomat, however, noted that the statements of the leadership of Azerbaijan in recent days demonstrate that Azerbaijan is not yet ready for that. Furthermore, creating obstacles for the repatriation of the Armenian prisoners of war, issuing a stamp glorifying the ethnic cleansing of Armenians, as well as the consistent threats being voiced by President Aliyev attest to the fact that Azerbaijan is challenging the trust-building efforts of international mediators.

"The provocative statements made by the President of Azerbaijan in Shushi, as well as the attempts to present the Holy Savior Ghazanchetsots Church, which had been targeted during the war, as a “war prize and symbol of victory” are particularly deplorable," Naghdalyan noted, adding: "These realities prove that the conflict is still far from being resolved, and the peace process is necessary to establish lasting peace in the region."

Tigran Abrahamyan: Authorities do not realize the war resumption does not depend only on us

Panorama, Armenia

The head of 'Henaket' analytical center Tigran Abrahamyan reacted to the comments by Deputy Speaker of Parliament, member of the ruling 'My Step' faction Lena Nazaryan, who had slammed expert opinions, suggesting to re-arm and prepare for the future victory. Nazaryan had named such approach as 'reactionary and dangerous.'

"These people have not realized that Turkey and Azerbaijan are not satisfied with what they have already achieved and they have openly stated about the future directions right after the war," Abrahamyan wrote on Facebook in response to Nazaryan's comment.

"These people do not understand that the war resumption does not depend only on us. They have not understood what the army is and what role servicemen, contract soldiers and officers have in it. These people have not only suffered a defeat but continue going through the path of defeats as they do not even dare to think about the victory or dream about it. What matters to them is not the motherland, the soil and water but their posts and well-being," Abrahamyan wrote.

In the expert's words, authorities destroy everything for saving their own skin, including the national dignity and the state institutions, the values, the spirit of the fighters, without even understanding that we are all on the same boat and all, will feel the consequences of the future blows.

The search operations resumed in Artsakh after Aliyev’s visit to Shushi

The search operations for bodies of killed in the Nagorno-Karabakh war zone have resumed on Saturday, the head of the press department of Artsakh’s State Service of Emergency Situation, Hunan Tadevosyan, told Panorama.am. Tadevosyan reminded that the operations were not conducted in the past two days due to the visit of the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his wife to the fortress town of Shushi occupied by the Azerbaijani forces during the 2020 war against Artsakh.

As the Artsakh official said five rescue and search groups have left in the directions of Shushi, Fizuli, Hadrut and Jabrayil. Meanwhile, on Friday, the Azerbaijani side handed over to the Armenian side two bodies from Talish and Mataghis directions.

"Bodies are unidentifiable. A forensic examination will be conducted. We assume they are servicemen as the bodies were retrieved from combat positions," Tadevosyan said.

To date, a total of 1232 bodies of servicemen and civilians have been found during the search operations.

Azerbaijan prohibiting the removal of over 1,500 works of art and exclusive samples from Armenian Shushi (PHOTOS)

Well-known geologist and philanthropist Grigor Gabrielyants, Director of the Museums of the City of Shushi SNCO Lusine Gasparyan and the Ministry of Culture of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) are actively negotiating with the Russian side to save the museum samples that are still preserved in the city of Shushi transferred to the enemy and remove them from the city. This is what Lusine Gasparyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am and voiced hope that it will be possible to at least save pieces of the tremendous cultural heritage of Shushi through the mediation of the Russian side.

Before the war that broke out in September 2020, there were 4 state and 2 private museums operating in Shushi, which is considered the center for culture in Artsakh. Unfortunately, during the war, only the samples of a private rug museum were removed from the city, and the samples of 3 of the 4 museums operating as part of the SNCO were moved to a bomb shelter.

“I was in Shushi in early November, and moved to Yerevan on November 5. During that period, it didn’t cross anyone’s mind that the city could be transferred to the enemy and it would be necessary to remove the collections kept in the bomb shelter. We moved all the samples to the bomb shelter amid shooting, and if we had known that the city might be transferred to the enemy, we would have moved the collections to Stepanakert,” Gasparyan said stressed that the authorities of Artsakh and Armenia hadn’t informed her and the others about the intention to hand the city, and until November 9, the Ministry of Defense insisted that Shushi was under Armenians’ control.

There are 197 monuments representing the history and culture of Shushi, nearly 800 paintings, graphic works and sculptures of the Museum of Fine Arts and over 700 samples of the Geology Museum of Shushi that are currently under the control of the enemy.

“Today the Azerbaijani side doesn’t even want to hear about the return of collections remaining in Shushi, but these collections are the cultural heritage of us Armenians and need to be returned to us. Knowing the enemy, we don’t have good expectations from the negotiations, but we have to do everything we can to save whatever there is,” Gabrielyants said. Gasparyan added that she is regularly following the scenes published in Azerbaijani sources showing that the museum wasn’t destroyed during shelling. According to her, this shows that the samples moved to the bomb shelter couldn’t have been damaged before November 9, and if the Azerbaijani side refuses to return the samples or declares that they haven’t been preserved, the only thing left to do is to conclude that we are dealing with another war crime.

Armenian PM candidate says Shushi was not captured by Azerbaijanis

It was possible and necessary to stop the Karabakh war earlier, Vazgen Manukyan, a candidate for Prime Minister of Armenia from the Salvation Homeland Movement told reportres on Saturday.

"And yet, if our army was ready for war, we could secure a strong position. But even in these unfavorable conditions, if there were no stupid orders, there was order and coordinated work of the army, we would not have had these losses," he noted.

"A few days later, when the war was going badly, it was possible and necessary to stop the war. There were assumptions, and we could stop the war earlier and with fewer losses. I consider it proven that Shushi was not captured by the Azerbaijanis, it was surrendered by ours, because of betrayal or stupidity – this is already a separate issue," he added.
