Armenia’s Authorities Block Opposition Mayor’s Inauguration

Secretary of State Antony Blinken during a telephone conversation with Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed, among other issues, the process of normalization of relations with Armenia.

Blinken and Cavusoglu “….. discussed issues related to the Horn of Africa, Turkey’s appointment of a Special Envoy to discuss the process of normalization with Armenia, and opportunities to deepen cooperation bilaterally and as NATO Allies to address areas of mutual concern,” a State Department said in a readout.

Meanwhile, according to Turkey’s Defense Minister Hulusi Akar Turkey and the United States are scheduled to discuss the situation around the F-35 fighter jet program during a meeting in Washington in early 2022, Sputnik reported.

“Regarding the F-35 issue, a US delegation came to Turkey in October on account of that issue. Our delegation will discuss this matter again early in the year. This meeting is likely to take place in Washington. We have clearly stated our position to the American side; we are waiting for the results,” Akar told the Hurriyet Daily News.

As Armenia and Turkey are preparing to begin discussions on normalization of relations, which will be carried out by special envoys appointed by Yerevan and Ankara,

Turkish airline Pegasus has applied to the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia to obtain permission to operate flights to and from Istanbul and Yerevan, Sona Harutyunyan, a spokesperson for Armenia’s Territorial Development Ministry confirmed to Public Radio of Armenia.

“Pegasus has submitted an application to operate two flights a week from February,” Harutyunyan said, adding that the Civil Aviation Committee has begun reviewing the application and will make a decision within a reasonable time frame.

Last week, the Armenian airline FlyOne Armenia received permission from the local aviation authorities to carry out charter flights to and from Yerevan and Istanbul and is awaiting a similar decision from the Turkey.

During the telephone conversation on January 3 between the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan and the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ebrahim Raisi on January 3, reference was made to the processes taking place in the region. ARMENPRESS reports according to the statement issued by the Iranian President’s Office Ebrahim Raisi called on to continue the dialogue between the two countries at different level.

“The sensitivity of the situation in the Caucasus region requires that the countries of the region regularly discuss regional and bilateral issues. One of the key directions of the policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran is supporting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the countries. In this sense, Tehran supports Armenia's sovereignty over all roads passing through that country," he said.

It is noted that Tehran welcomes the progress in the negotiation process between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Iranian President expressed hope that the problems between the two countries will be resolved peacefully on the basis of international principles. "We support the unblocking of roads," Raisi said.

Serviceman arrested on suspicion of killing comrade

YEREVAN, JANUARY 4, ARMENPRESS. A serviceman is under arrest on suspicion of killing his comrade at a military base in Vayots Dzor Province.

According to the Ministry of Defense – the victim of the alleged crime –  Private Movses Tadevosyan – a 19-year-old conscripted serviceman, was found with a gunshot wound to the head in his military base in the morning of December 31, 2021. Private Tadevosyan died while being rushed to a hospital.

Authorities say they have reasons to believe that another serviceman of the same base is responsible for killing Private Tadevosyan. The suspect was taken into custody amid an investigation.

Coronavirus: Armenian CDC reports 90 new cases, 3 deaths

YEREVAN, JANUARY 4, ARMENPRESS. 90 new cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total number of confirmed cases to 345,126, the Armenian National Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.

4036 tests were administered (total 2,581,573).

203 people recovered from COVID-19, raising the number of recoveries to 332,201.

3 people died, bringing the death toll to 7986.

As of January 4, the number of active cases stood at 3429.

Georgia again rejects 3+3 format meeting

YEREVAN, JANUARY 4, ARMENPRESS. Georgia will again not participate in the 3+3 platform’s second meeting which is planned to be held in Turkey, Georgia’s Ambassador to Ankara George Janjgava told the Daily Sabah newspaper.

“Georgia will definitely not attend the 3+3 meeting,” Janjgava told Daily Sabah.

The first meeting of the 3+3 format – a regional cooperation platform brought forward after the 2020 Nagorno Karabakh war which was supposed to include Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and Iran – was held in Russia in December 2021.

Georgia repeatedly refused to participate.

Income tax lowered in Armenia

YEREVAN, JANUARY 4, ARMENPRESS. Income tax rate dropped from 22% to 21% starting January 1, while the rate of pension payments increased 1% and is now 4,5%.

Armenia passed a law in 2019 adopting flat income tax rates and the rate was decreasing 1% every year. It will eventually stand at 20% in 2023.

The pension payment is a mandatory payment taxed from employed citizens born after 1974 January 1 guaranteeing retirement pension. Citizens born after 1974 are entitled to join the pension plan voluntarily.

The pension tax, aka social payment, was at a rate of 2,5% in 2020 for citizens whose salary was below 500,000 drams, and another 7,5% was paid by the government. Since 2021, the rate became 3,5% and 6,5% respectively, and from 2022 it was changed to 4,5% and 5,5%.

Turkish Pegasus airline requests permit from Armenian aviation authorities to re-launch Istanbul-Yerevan flights

YEREVAN, JANUARY 4, ARMENPRESS. The Turkish Pegasus airline asked Armenian aviation authorities permit to re-launch its roundtrip flights from Istanbul to Yerevan, the spokesperson for the Armenian Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Sona Harutyunyan told ARMENPRESS.

“Pegasus applied to the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia requesting permit to operate two flights a week starting February,” Harutyunyan said.

The application is now being processed and a decision will be issued soon.

Last week, the Flyone Armenia airline announced that it was granted permit by the Armenian aviation regulator to operate flights from Yerevan to Istanbul. Flyone Armenia had said that it’s awaiting permit from Turkish aviation authorities to launch the flights.
