Sports: Wisconsin Basketball: Essegian Selected To Train And Play With Armenian National Team

Connor Essegian is already a very good player for the Wisconsin Badgers. He had a fantastic freshman season. There is no doubt he is on the verge of a breakout sophomore season after averaging 11,7 points a game as a freshman and earning Big Ten All Freshman honor.. It’s becoming clear his play is being noticed as well. It was announced this afternoon from the Wisconsin Basketball Twitter page that Connor Essegian has been selected to train and play for the Armenian National team.

In a statement from the UW Athletics page:

“Essegian will be making his debut for Armenia in the “Armenian Basketball Classic,” an event that will take place June 16-17 and have Armenia facing France – ranked No. 5 globally – in back-to-back games. Both games will be played in California at Premier America Credit Union Arena on the campus of California State University, Northridge. It will mark the first-ever Armenian basketball games to be played in the United States.”

The release also mentions that Essegian’s father is 50% Armenian and his grandfather is 100% Armenian. Essegian also made the following remarks in the press release:

“I’m really excited to have the opportunity to play the game that I love, while also representing Armenia and my family in the process,” Essegian said. “My father’s side is Armenian and I believe one of my relatives, Chuck Essegian, was the first Armenian player in Major League Baseball, so I’m excited to add to that history through the game of basketball. I’m also excited to represent Wisconsin on an international level of competition. I plan to use this opportunity to challenge myself against professional-level players, while also better preparing for this upcoming season.”

The following remarks also came from Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard:

“Any time one of our athletes gets to play on an international stage and represent their heritage it is an awesome opportunity,” Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard said. “We’ve had several players over the years use this experience as a springboard into the next season, and I know that Connor will go in with his eyes and ears wide open to squeeze everything out of this opportunity that he can. I’m excited to follow him as he competes.”

When I think about this, I think about the opportunity Johnny Davis got before his sophomore season. He was selected to represent team USA in the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup. Davis played well and it gave him momentum to having the year he had with Wisconsin. Davis just finished his rookie season with the Washington Wizards after being selected 10th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Seyran Ohanyan: Work should be done to ensure that Russian peacekeepers remain in Karabakh after their term expires

News.am
Armenia –

Azerbaijan will continuously achieve its long-term goal by putting pressure on the authorities of Armenia and Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) to achieve the de-Armenianization of Artsakh, and be in a win-win situation with Armenia if there is border delimitation and demarcation. Seyran Ohanyan, head of the opposition "Armenia" Faction of the National Assembly and former defense minister of Armenia, told this to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

According to Ohanyan, Azerbaijan also wants to get a road or a corridor through the territory of Armenia in order to implement the “Great Turan” policy.

As for the Armenian authorities, Ohanyan said that as a result of their policies, they brought Armenia and Artsakh into war, they did nothing to achieve success in the war, whereas the Armenian people had the opportunities and potential for all of this.

"All we have to do is solely reaffirm the ‘red lines’ marked by the ‘Armenia’ alliance, that the only way is the self-determination of Artsakh, which can bring about the security of Artsakh and sustainable development in its historical territory," Ohanyan added, in particular.

According to him, Azerbaijan's actions and statements show that peaceful coexistence with that country is not possible, and therefore Artsakh cannot be a part of Azerbaijan.

To the question whether Azerbaijan's provocations can lead to large-scale military actions, Seyran Ohanyan responded that this depends on the Armenian people.

"The more they [i.e. the Armenian authorities] surrender, the stricter and sharper Azerbaijan's actions will be towards Artsakh and Armenia. The Armenian people should go for a national uprising and organize our defense and get rid of these [incumbent Armenian] authorities," Ohanyan said.

He reflected on the Artsakh authorities as well, noting that they should have a strategy that should be aimed first of all at being in an advantageous position in security issues.

"These opportunities exist in Artsakh. Second, to demand from the Armenian authorities the commitment that Armenia is obligated to. Third, major steps must be taken in foreign policy. The first is relations with Russia; it is the major work on international platforms. On the ground, the security of Artsakh is ensured by the Russian peacekeeping forces. And major work must be done so that after the expiration of the term of the Russian peacekeepers, the peacekeepers do not leave at the request of one side [i.e. Azerbaijan], but of the other side—the Armenian side, the Russian peacekeepers remain there," Ohanyan said.

"The second unit that should ensure the security of Artsakh is the Artsakh Defense Army. We must present to the international community that the Artsakh Defense Army was formed at the initial phase of Artsakh's self-determination, when Azerbaijan opposed provocations to it, then it turned into large-scale military actions. At that time, in order to organize its self-defense in the territory of Artsakh, the Defense Army was created within its capabilities," Seyran Ohanyan noted.

News.am
Armenia –

The president of Azerbaijan announced the inevitability of opening the "Zangezur corridor."

“We have had an exchange of views on the soonest opening of the Zangezur corridor. The sooner it opens, the better it is. Opening of the Zangezur corridor is inevitable, ” Ilham Aliyev said in a press statement following an expanded meeting with visiting Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, APA reports.

“We will continue our efforts in this direction either way. Opening of this corridor will open up new opportunities for all the countries and have a positive impact on the regional cooperation,” Aliyev added.

“The speedy solution of the Zangezur corridor issue will provide us with two important opportunities. Turkey’s connection with Nakhchivan will be stronger thanks to the steps to be taken in the area of road and railway communication. The establishment of a checkpoint by Azerbaijan is against efforts to build trust between the parties. Josep Borrell

 18:11,

YEREVAN, JUNE 13, ARMENPRESS. Baku's installation of a checkpoint in the Lachin Corridor runs counter to efforts to build trust between the two sides, ARMENPRESS reports High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said during the discussion on "Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and the Lachin Corridor" in the European Parliament.

During the question-and-answer session, MEP Francois Xavier Bellamy strongly criticized Azerbaijan's blockade of the Lachin Corridor, which led to a humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh.

"The Court of Justice has condemned the blockade by Azerbaijan, but this state terrorism has not led to any sanctions by the Council, and the Commission seems unable to properly condemn this very serious violation of the fundamental rights of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh," the MEP said.

Referring to the MEP’s observations, EU High Representative for for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell emphasized. "Azerbaijan's unilateral decision to install this checkpoint completely contradicts efforts to build trust between the parties."

Borrell emphasized that the Lachin Corridor is outside the geographical area of responsibility of the EU monitoring mission.

"There are territories, border areas with Armenia, from where it can be seen what is happening in the Lachin Corridor, but the corridor itself is outside the jurisdiction of the mission and their area of responsibility. Now we are trying to find a solution for this specific problem," Borrell said.

As for the inactivity mentioned by the MEPs, Borrell emphasized that a very important meeting between the French President, the German Chancellor, the President of the European Council and leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan took place in Moldova recently. In addition, according to Borrell, another meeting with Charles Michel is planned in Brussels in July.

According to Josep Borrell, efforts are being made to resolve the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, the parties have also expressed readiness to continue negotiations.

Azerbaijani side opened fire in the direction of a metallurgical factory that will be built in Yeraskh. MFA

News.am
Armenia –

On May 13, the armed forces of Azerbaijan, once again resorting to the use of force, opened fire on the positions of the armed forces of the Republic of Armenia and civilian objects located near the Yeraskh settlement of the Republic of Armenia. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia reports.

It is noteworthy that the Azerbaijani side opened fire in the direction of a metallurgical factory which will be built in Yeraskh with the involvement of foreign investments. This was preceded by Azerbaijan's false accusations against the Armenian side regarding the construction of the mentioned factory. The Republic of Armenia has previously stated that the construction of the plant fully complies with its international obligations, and that Azerbaijan's false concerns are simply aimed at hindering Armenia's economic development and foreign investments.

Now, by firing at the plant under construction, Azerbaijan demonstrates overt disregard towards Armenia's internationally recognized borders, human rights and international law. Moreover, Azerbaijan consistently proves that in the negotiation processes with the Republic of Armenia in all directions it is guided only by the principle of imposing the desired solutions on the Republic of Armenia with the illegal use of force, perceiving the weak response and permissiveness of the international community as a favorable or encouraging environment.

We call on the international community to take concrete steps to curb Azerbaijan's expansionist ambitions and its unacceptable policy of achieving its groundless, illogical and arbitrary demands through the use of force and the threat of force.
