YEREVAN, APRIL 28, ARMENPRESS. The Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan said on Friday that France can help Armenia in both resolving its security-related issues and the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

“France can definitely bring much benefit in many issues and help Armenia,” Grigoryan told reporters in Jermuk. “As you know, the EU civilian mission was deployed to Armenia as a result of the meeting in Prague, where the President of France had an important role. France continues to seek ways for helping Armenia. Also as a Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group it continues to be engaged in the NK issue. As you know, the French Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group has arrived to Armenia together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of France. At this moment we see great interest from France for a resolution of the situation in Lachin Corridor,” Armen Grigoryan said.

He added that Armenia is carrying out intensive work with its international partners in order for an international fact-finding mission to be sent to Lachin Corridor and Nagorno Karabakh. Grigoryan said that this issue is also being discussed with France and Armenia expects to receive support.

Secretary Grigoryan stressed that they offered Foreign Minister of France Catherine Colonna to visit Jermuk in order to have a better understanding of the situation.

“From our discussions I have an impression that the minister has a full understanding of the situation,” Grigoryan said.

Asked by ARMENPRESS about the current phase in conveying peace treaty proposals between Armenia and Azerbaijan given Baku’s statement claiming that Armenia hasn’t conveyed its proposals for more than 40 days, Grigoryan said: “Negotiations are expected soon, discussions are underway. Azerbaijan was also late in the past when we had conveyed our proposals. That’s very normal. We didn’t convey for one reason, because negotiations were planned, that’s the reason. I think Azerbaijan is simply engaged in a policy of deviating the attention of the international community from other important issues.”

April 29 (Reuters) – Turkey on Saturday closed its airspace to low-cost Armenian airline FlyOne Armenia without warning, the domestic Armenpress news agency cited the carrier's board chairman as saying.

"For reasons incomprehensible to us and without any visible grounds, Turkish aviation authorities cancelled the permission previously granted to the FlyOne Armenia airline to operate flights to Europe through Turkish airspace," said Aram Ananyan, FlyOne's chairman.

"Turkish aviation authorities implemented the cancellation without prior notification, putting our airline and our passengers in an uncomfortable situation."

FlyOne Armenia, a subsidiary of Moldovan airline FlyOne, began operations in December 2021. In February 2023, Ananyan told Armenpress that the carrier had five Airbus aircraft and offered flights to 14 destinations in eight European and Middle Eastern nations.

Ankara has not had diplomatic or commercial ties with Armenia since the 1990s.

The two nations are at odds primarily over the 1.5 million people that Armenia says were killed in 1915 by the Ottoman Empire, the predecessor to modern Turkey. Armenia says this constitutes genocide, a charge Turkey denies.

But in February, a border gate between the neighbours was opened for the first time in 35 years to allow aid for victims of the devastating earthquakes in southern Turkey.

Turkey accused of restricting airspace for Armenian plane

First Post

Turkey abruptly restricted its airspace to low-cost Armenian airline FlyOne Armenia on Saturday.

Aram Ananyan, the chairman of FlyOne, said, “For reasons incomprehensible to us and without any obvious grounds, Turkish aviation authorities revoked the permission previously granted to the FlyOne Armenia airline to operate flights to Europe through Turkish airspace.”

“Our airline and our passengers were placed in an uncomfortable situation because Turkish aviation authorities implemented the cancellation without prior notice,” he added.

The Moldovan airline FlyOne’s affiliate, FlyOne Armenia, started operations in December 2021.

According to Ananyan’s statement to Armenpress in February 2023, the airline operated flights to 14 locations in eight different European and Middle Eastern countries using five Airbus aircraft.

Since the 1990s, Ankara has not maintained diplomatic or business ties with Armenia.

The main point of contention between the two countries is to Armenia’s claims that the Ottoman Empire, the forerunner of contemporary Turkey, slaughtered 1.5 million people in 1915.

Armenia claims that this amounts to genocide, a claim Turkey refutes.

To allow relief for the victims of the terrible earthquakes in southern Turkey, a border gate between the neighbours was opened in February for the first time in 35 years.

Armenia, Azerbaijan to Meet in US for Talks to Normalize Relations

Armenia and Azerbaijan will hold a new round of talks in Washington on Sunday to try to normalize relations, Yerevan said on Saturday, after weeks of rising tensions over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Armed forces from the two Caucasus neighbors have frequently exchanged fire amid disputes over the mountain enclave, which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but populated mainly by ethnic Armenians.

Azerbaijan set up a new checkpoint last Sunday on the Lachin Corridor, a road to Karabakh that passes through Azeri territory, in a move that Armenia called a gross violation of a 2020 cease-fire.

"From April 30 Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan will be in Washington DC on a working visit. The next round of discussions on the agreement on normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan is scheduled," the spokesperson, Ani Badalyan, said on her official Facebook page.

There was no immediate confirmation of the meeting by Azerbaijan.

Later on Saturday, the Armenian defense ministry said one of its soldiers had been injured by shot fired by Azeri forces near the village of Tegh in Armenia's southern Syunik province, Tass news agency said.

Tegh is the last village on the Lachin Corridor in Armenia before it enters Azeri territory.

Russian peacekeepers were deployed in 2020 to end a war, the second that Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought over the enclave since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

Despite years of attempted mediation between them, Armenia and Azerbaijan have yet to reach a peace agreement that would settle outstanding issues such as the demarcation of borders and return of prisoners.
