Anti-Armenian propaganda in Azerbaijan’s educational system

The education system of Azerbaijan is saturated with anti-Armenian sentiment. The formation of the image of Armenians as an enemy occurs through all possible platforms and means. The most effective method is through the curricula at public schools and kindergartens. Azeri children learn from a very young age that Armenians are the enemy, and that Karabakh and Armenia are “occupied Azerbaijani historical lands” that must be returned. This is the germination of Armenian hatred and inhumanity. As the main priority of state propaganda, this type of education is prevalent across a variety of statewide programs and extracurricular activities. Particularly disturbing is when the propaganda of falsifications, lies and Armenian hatred becomes the plot and content of Azerbaijani fairy tales.

In 2011, under the auspices of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan, the first theater festival for children and youth was organized with a primary theme of patriotism. One of the winners of the festival was Sh. Xeyrulla’s mono performance “My Hostile Toy” about the great Armenian military leader Andranik Ozanyan. In addition to the dehumanization and depersonalization of Ozanyan, the performance discredited the Armenian hero with the goal of discrediting the whole nation.

Armenians are also promoted as enemies through fairy tales. In “The Tale of Ilham,” for example, Ilham is a kind and hardworking blacksmith, who is killed by treacherous Armenians for no reason. The qualities of treachery are attributed to Armenians and Russians. In “Bad Neighbor,” Rovshan is the protagonist, while Vardan the Armenian is the antagonist, portrayed with the worst human qualities, including jealousy, which compel him to throw poor Rovshan into a well. The “Innocent Woman” includes an Armenian girl named Siranush, an imposter sent from Armenian land who abuses the Shah’s trust.

Socialization begins through fairy tales, along with recognition of the artistic world. Such fairy tale series’ should not become the right way of raising a generation.

The perpetuation of Armenian hatred is systematic and planned, starting from the primary level of general education. In history, geography, literature and language textbooks, the image of hostile Armenians is taken to the extreme. In contrast, Armenian elementary education generally does not include stories or poems that refer to Azerbaijanis or Turks with hatred, enmity and aggressive content. Morning exercises in the public schools of Azerbaijan include the message “Karabakh is Azerbaijan.” Schoolchildren loudly repeat the phrase three times; they’re also instructed to repeat “Armenians are enemies” (dushman). These hostile messages and images are everywhere.

After the 44-day war, books were published with great intensity in which both Artsakh and Armenia were presented as part of Azerbaijan, and Yerevan and Lake Sevan are presented as occupied territories of Azerbaijan. The illustrated book “Shushi” is intended for preschool children, as well as children of primary school age and adolescents. The poems of Ruslan Novruz, unfortunately, are included in the methodological literature for teachers, which they use at their discretion during lessons, activities and events organized with children.

In the poem “Armenians” by Novruz (accessed through the Wayback Machine Internet Archive), one can find the following lines:

If he sleeps in the cradle
Don’t hold the knife too long
Find a sharper one and slit his neck.
He is a dirty Armenian.

In this poem, the Armenian is the son of Satan.

There’s also a poem by Novruz about “The three-year-old soldier.”

As soon as he wakes up from sleep,
He immediately takes his weapon,
Every day my little grandson
Slaughters, kill the enemy.
He wears a soldier’s clothes,
Wears a soldier’s hat
Like a real soldier
He is dressed and ready.
And all of a sudden with full force
He shouts “Hurray!”
And passes with victory
Through Shushi and Khojaly.
And the child soldier passes
Through Mrav Mountain,
Kalbajar is free from fascists.
The little brave fights
He fights in place of the elders.
My child, fight!
Maybe the elders will be ashamed while looking at you.
And sooner or later, not only Karabakh,
But also the den of blood – Yerevan, must be occupied.

The following lines can be found in an Azerbaijani language textbook for second graders:

The Armenians didn’t let Santa Claus and the Snow Maiden
To enter Kalbajar and Lachin.
My dream is to have Santa Claus
Cover all the mountains with snow
And next year, invite us to Karabakh…

(Translated by Angela Elibegova and Hovik Avanesov).

Thematic materials saturated with aggression find their place in all subjects and programs. In the 8th grade curriculum, there’s the song “Mother’s Instruction to her Son,” written by Mirza Bayramov with music by Uzeyir Hajibayli (O. Rajabov, N. Kyazimov, A. Babaeva, Music, textbook, Baku, 2017, 96 pages).

….You are brave,
And your name went far and wide
A worthy mother gave birth to you, be a worthy son.
The news about Azerbaijani brave men spread all over the world.
At the top of each mountain is the Kyurogli fortress,
The arrogance of the bloodthirsty enemy will soon be quenched.
The fields will be his grave
And his foul breath will blow.
Take your dagger and pierce his eye and let him drown in blood.

The forging and falsification of history is a state-sponsored initiative in Azerbaijan. Generations of Azerbaijanis are being raised, educated and socialized based on lies, hatred, aggression and intolerance, leaving no room in their mental world for humanity and truth. These destructive human qualities reveal themselves in Azerbaijan’s ongoing human rights violations, violence and terrorism against Armenians in the 21st century.

More Charges Brought Against Former Amenian PM

        • Naira Bulghadarian

Armenia - Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian chairs a cabinet meeting in Yerevan,
16Jun2016.

Armenian law-enforcement authorities brought more criminal charges against
former Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian on Tuesday after moving to confiscate a
large part of his big fortune.

Abrahamian, who served as prime minister from 2014-2016, was charged with abuse
of power and illegal entrepreneurial activity in September 2018. The accusations
denied by him stem from allegations by a businessman that in 2008 Abrahamian
forced him to give up a majority stake in his sand quarry located in Armenia’s
Ararat province.

Abrahamian was the chief of then President Serzh Sarkisian’s staff at the time.
His brother Henrik and a relative of then Ararat Governor Alik Sargsian each
bought 30 percent stakes in the sand quarry at a knockdown price.

The Anti-Corruption Committee (ACC) announced that as part of the same criminal
investigation it also charged Abrahamian with money laundering. It claimed that
he did not declare 230 million drams ($590,000) in “illegal revenue” obtained
from the quarry and used it for buying real estate and other transactions.

The law-enforcement agency did not explain why it took investigators so long to
file the additional charges and why the ex-premier has still not gone on trial
nearly five years after his first indictment.

Abrahamian and his lawyers could not be reached for comment.

The 64-year-old is a native of Aarat who used to hold sway in the region south
of Yerevan, developing extensive business interests there before holding senior
state positions. He fell out with Serzh Sarkisian shortly after being sacked as
prime minister in 2016.

Prosecutors recently asked an Armenian court to confiscate 21 billion drams ($54
million) in cash and 59 properties belonging to Abrahamian or his family, saying
that these assets were acquired illegally. Court hearings on the suit have yet
to start.

Azeri Soldier Accused Of Murder In Armenia

        • Ruzanna Stepanian

Armenia-Armenia - A screenshot of video of Syunik residents apprehending an
Azerbaijani soldier, April 13, 2023.

One of the two Azerbaijani soldiers detained in Armenia last week was charged on
Tuesday with killing an Armenian man.

The 56-year-old Hayrapet Meliksetian worked as a security guard at a waste
disposal facility of Armenia’s largest mining company located in southeastern
Syunik province. He was found shot dead on April 12 several kilometers from
where the Azerbaijani soldier, Huseyn Akhundov, was caught the following day.

The Office of the Prosecutor-General said that Akhundov committed the murder in
a failed attempt to steal the guard’s car and flee to neighboring Iran. It
claimed that the car did not start and Akhundov fled the scene before using the
victim’s mobile phone to record a video in which he bragged about killing
Armenians and said “we are not traitors of our fatherland.”

The video posted on social media was widely circulated by Armenian media outlets
shortly after several Syunik residents apprehended Akhundov on a highway near
the provincial capital Kapan. The soldier was apparently unarmed during his
detention.

Speaking to RFE/RL’s Armenian Service earlier on Tuesday, Narek Ghahramanian, a
Kapan-born parliamentarian affiliated with the ruling Civil Contract party, said
that Akhundov confessed to the murder. Ghahramanian suggested that investigators
are looking for his weapon.

The second Azerbaijani serviceman, identified as Akshin Bebirov, was detained on
April 12 in a Syunik village located about 100 kilometers northwest of Kapan.
According to the Armenian military, he claimed to have crossed the Armenian
border with Azerbaijan’s Nakhichevan exclave together with another soldier
believed to be Akhundov.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian said on April 12 that they deserted their army
unit in Nakhichevan because of “being subjected to hazing and humiliation by
other soldiers.”

The Azerbaijani government demanded the immediate release of both servicemen
charged with illegally crossing into Armenia. It did not immediately react to
the murder charge brought against Akhundov.

Sargis Khandanian, the chairman of the Armenian parliament committee on foreign
relations, indicated that given the accusations leveled against them Yerevan
does not intend to swap Akhundov and Bebirov for any of at least 33 Armenian
soldiers who were taken prisoner during or after the 2020 Karabakh war and
remain in Azerbaijani captivity.

“Armenia is not planning to make any concessions on this matter,” Khandanian
told reporters.

Pashinian Reaffirms Recognition Of Azerbaijan’s Territorial Integrity (UPDATED)

        • Nane Sahakian
        • Lusine Musayelian

Armenia - Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian prepares to address the parliament,
Yerevan, .

Armenia unequivocally recognizes Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and is ready
to sign a relevant peace treaty with Baku, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian said
on Tuesday.

“The peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan will become realistic if the
two countries recognize clearly, without ambiguities and pitfalls, each other's
territorial integrity and undertake not to ever submit territorial claims to
each other,” Pashinian told the Armenian parliament.

“I now want to reaffirm that Armenia fully recognizes the territorial integrity
of Azerbaijan and we expect Azerbaijan to do the same by recognizing the entire
territory of the Armenian [Soviet Socialist Republic] as the [modern-day]
Republic of Armenia,” he said.

Pashinian already vowed such recognition in a joint statement with Azerbaijani
President Ilham Aliyev, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Union
chief Charles Michel issued after their meeting held in Prague last October. The
statement upheld a 1991 declaration in which Armenia and other newly independent
Soviet republics recognized each other’s Soviet-era borders.

This was due to be at the heart of an Armenian-Azerbaijani peace treaty promoted
by the West. Pashinian publicly backed such a deal ahead of the Prague summit,
stoking Armenian opposition claims that he is ready to help Baku regain full
control over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov likewise said in December that Pashinian
effectively recognized Azerbaijani sovereignty over Karabakh at Prague. Lavrov
said the Armenian leader thus all but precluded a different peace deal favored
by Moscow. It would indefinitely delay an agreement on Karabakh’s status.

An Armenian opposition lawmaker, Artur Khachatrian, challenged Pashinian on
Tuesday to clarify his position on Karabakh’s future status. The prime minister
gave no clear answer, saying only that there needs to be an “international
mechanism” for direct talks between Baku and Karabakh’s leadership.

In April 2022, Pashinian sparked angry opposition protests in Yerevan when he
signaled readiness to “lower the bar” on Karabakh’s status acceptable to
Armenia. He and other Armenian officials also stopped making references to the
Karabakh Armenians’ right to self-determination in their public statements.

Pashinian’s Civil Contract party pledged to continue championing the principle
of self-determination in its 2021 election manifesto.

Artsvik Minasian, another opposition lawmaker, accused the Armenian government
of not honoring that pledge and thus calling its legitimacy into question.

Meanwhile, Aliyev said that Armenia’s leadership now “agrees in principle” with
his position on the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace treaty. Still, he said, Pashinian
should go farther and declare that “Karabakh is Azerbaijan.”

In an interview with Azerbaijani state television aired on Tuesday, Aliyev also
renewed his threats of fresh military action against Armenia, saying that
Azerbaijan is strengthening its army because it “must be ready for any
situation.”

Aliyev went on to again rule out any internationally mediated talks with
Karabakh representatives. Karabakh Armenians should accept Azerbaijani
citizenship or leave the territory, he said.

“The separatists have to realize that they have two options: either they will
live under Azerbaijani rule or leave,” added Aliyev.

Senior U.S. Diplomat Visits Armenia

Armenia - Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian meets US Deputy Assistant Secretary of
State Erika Olson, Yerevan, .

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian met on Tuesday with a visiting senior official
from the U.S. State Department for talks on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and
U.S.-Armenian relations.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Erika Olson met with other senior Armenian
officials in Yerevan on Monday. The U.S. Embassy in Armenia said at the start of
her trip that she will discuss “U.S. support for an Armenia-Azerbaijan peace
agreement and U.S.-Armenian bilateral ties.”

In a statement, Pashinian’s press office said the normalization of
Armenian-Azerbaijani relations was on the agenda of his meeting with Olson. It
said they also touched upon Azerbaijan’s continuing blockade of Karabakh’s land
link with Armenia and “the creation of an international mechanism for dialogue
between Baku and Stepanakert.”

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov accused Yerevan on Monday of
hampering Baku’s efforts to “reintegrate” the Karabakh Armenians into Azerbaijan
in a phone call with another U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state, Dereck
Hogan. According to Azerbaijani news agencies, Hogan stressed the importance of
“successfully completing the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization process.”

Earlier on Monday, Bayramov met with Louis Bono, a U.S. special envoy for
Armenian-Azerbaijani peace talks. Bono visited Armenia last week.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken mediated talks between Pashinian and
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on February 18 on the sidelines of the Munich
Security Conference. Blinken had separate phone conversations with the two
leaders late last month.

Asbarez: Armenian Genocide Education Act Set for Introduction

Armenian Genocide Education Act Set for Introduction graphic

ANCA-Backed Bipartisan Measure Seeks $10 Million to Fund Armenian Genocide Education

WASHINGTON—The Armenian National Committee of America welcomed news that Representatives Anna Eshoo (D-CA), David Valadao (R-CA), Ted Lieu (D-CA), and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) are re-introducing the Armenian Genocide Education Act, a bipartisan measure – building upon official U.S. Congressional and Presidential recognition of this crime – to fund Library of Congress educational programs about the history, lessons, consequences, and ongoing costs of the Armenian Genocide.

This landmark legislation – strongly supported by the ANCA – seeks to provide $10 million in funding over five years for the Library of Congress to educate Americans about Ottoman Turkey’s systematic and deliberate state-sponsored mass murder, national dispossession, cultural erasure, and exile of millions of Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Syriacs, Arameans, Maronites, and other Christians, between 1915 and 1923.

“With Azerbaijan, backed by Turkey, openly seeking to complete the Armenian Genocide, it’s more urgent than ever for American school children to learn the lessons of this still unpunished – still ongoing – crime against all humanity,” said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian. “Chief among these lessons is that we – as Americans – must never, for reasons of political convenience or practical expediency, turn a blind eye to state-driven genocidal campaigns to eradicate indigenous populations or other at-risk groups, anywhere in the world.”

Building upon the 2019 passage of H.Res.296 and S.Res.150 – which specifically rejected any official U.S. association with Armenian Genocide denial – the Armenian Genocide Education Act seeks to counter discourse and propaganda that claims that Ottoman Turkey’s systematic and deliberate state-sponsored mass murder, national dispossession, cultural erasure, and exile of millions of Christians between 1915 and 1923 did not take place. A similar measure was introduced in the last session of Congress.

Members of Congress can join as original cosponsors of the measure in the days leading up to its introduction, timed around April 24th, the international day of justice for the Armenian Genocide.

Rep. Schiff Leads U.S. House Drive to Block Rifle Sale to Azerbaijan

Rep. Adam Schiff is calling on his Congressional colleagues to join him in demanding that the U.S. block rifle sales to Azerbaijan

Launches Congressional Letter to Commerce Sec. Raimondo Citing Azerbaijan’s ongoing Anti-Armenian Aggression and 125+ Day Blockade

WASHINGTON—Rep. Adam Schiff is calling on his Congressional colleagues to join him in demanding that the Commerce Department explain why it is considering licensing the sale of high-powered U.S. rifles to Azerbaijan, in the face of Azerbaijan’s 125-plus day blockade of Artsakh and ongoing attacks on Armenia, which left four Armenians dead and six injured just last week, reported the Armenian National Committee of America.

“The same Biden Administration that continues shipping military aid to oil-rich Azerbaijan and has yet to investigate the discovery of U.S. parts in the Turkish drones deployed by Azerbaijan against Artsakh is now considering the direct sale of U.S. rifles to Azerbaijan, a dictatorship whose military openly executes unarmed Armenian POWs with rifles, then posts, trophy, videos of these killings on social media,” stated ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian.  “We join with Congressman Schiff, Senator Menendez, and all those – Democrats and Republicans – in the House and Senate who stand against this reckless arms sale,” concluded Hamparian.

In a “Dear Colleague” letter to U.S. House members, Rep. Schiff is urging his colleagues to co-sign a letter to Secretary Raimondo seeking “additional information from the Commerce Department about the status of any requests for export licenses to send lethal weapons to Azerbaijan and safeguards to prevent U.S. weapons from being used in the commission of human rights violations.”

Rep. Schiff stated, “approving the export of more lethal weapons to be pointed at Armenia would only fuel conflict, especially in the hands of security forces with a history of human rights violations. The State Department’s 2022 Human Rights Report documents ‘credible reports of unlawful killings involving summary executions of Armenian soldiers in Azerbaijani custody,’ torture, and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment with high levels of impunity.”

Members of Congress have until Friday, April 21st to co-sign the letter to Secretary Raimondo. The ANCA is working with regional and local affiliates to encourage broad bi-partisan support for the letter.

News of a possible sale of U.S. rifles – including assault-style and semi-automatic sniper models – to Azerbaijan broke on February 1st when Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair Robert Menendez (D-NJ) announced his “deep concern and strong opposition” to the proposed sale.

“The export of weapons to an authoritarian country that wages war against a neighbor, blockades a vulnerable population, and commits rampant human rights violations at home is not consistent with the Administration’s commitment to democracy and human rights,” Sen. Menendez stated in a letter to Secretary Raimondo. “Further, the consideration of this export license further compounds my dismay that the Administration continues to allow the export of assault-style and sniper rifles abroad – even while supporting an assault-style rifle ban domestically – and deepens my reservations about the Department of Commerce having jurisdiction over such exports,” concluded Senator Menendez.

ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian and the local ANC chair from Secretary Raimondo’s home state of Rhode Island, Steve Elmasian, expressed similar concerns in a February 13th letter to Secretary Raimondo. “As you know, from your long friendship with Americans of Armenian heritage in Rhode Island and across the United States, our community is deeply troubled by the U.S. military aid program to Baku, and even more shocked by the possibility that American offensive weaponry may be deployed against Armenians in Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) and Armenia. The victims of Azerbaijan’s attacks are, very often, the relatives and friends of Armenian American citizens,” stated Hamparian and Elmasian.

Aliyev Demands that Armenia Announce ‘Karabakh is Azerbaijan’

President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan

In his latest unhinged statements, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan demanded that Armenia publicly announce that “Karabakh is Azerbaijan.”

Recalling Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s now infamous announcement in Stepanakert that “Artsakh is Armenia,” the Azerbaijani leader said in an interview published on the president’s website on Tuesday that the time has come for Armenia to acknowledge Karabakh as Azerbaijan.

“Armenia, which used to say that ‘Karabakh is Armenia. Period’ must now repeat our words that “Karabakh is Azerbaijan and exclamation point,’” Aliyev told Azerbaijani State Television during an interview.

“Having shown its readiness for a peace treaty based on the Alma-Ata Declaration, Armenia should now officially declare that Karabakh is Azerbaijan,” reiterated Aliyev, referring to an agreement between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan reached last year in Prague, where they pledged to recognize each other’s territorial integrity based on a 1991 declaration that defined the borders of the Commonwealth of Independent States after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

“We have repeatedly stated that we will not discuss our domestic affairs with any country and Karabakh is our domestic affair. Armenians living in Karabakh should either accept Azerbaijani citizenship or find another place to live,” threatened Aliyev.

He went on to assert that Azerbaijan “owns” the territory of Artsakh and continues to emphasize this point by using derogatory terms against Artsakh Armenian, whom he called “separatists,” including the former leaders of Armenia.

“The separatists should also understand that they have two options: either they will live under the Azerbaijani flag or they will leave. We have chased Serzhik Sarkisian, Robert Kocharian and Seyran Ohanyan, the main figures of the separatists, out of Karabakh like dogs and brought them to their knees. They came to Karabakh during the Second Karabakh War supposedly to fight against us. All three ran away from our lands like rabbits. None of them can poke their nose into Khankendi [Stepanakert] or any other place now,” said Aliyev.

He also called the current leadership in Artsakh “clowns.”

“The separatists, who are currently inventing some fictitious names for themselves – one calls himself a president, another calls himself a minister, another one calls himself a speaker of some parliament – this group of clowns must finally understand that they cannot test our patience,” Aliyev added. “We have tried to explain to them many times in different ways that they will either follow our word or they will be ejected from there.”

He called the residents of Artsakh “hostages” to the Artsakh and Armenian leadership, whom he called “leeches.”

“I am sure that the majority of the Armenian population currently living in Karabakh is ready to accept Azerbaijani citizenship. Simply put, these leeches, these predatory animals won’t let them do that. They won’t let these people live comfortably, having kept them as hostages for 30 years,” declared Aliyev.

“Everyone should hear this – both the Armenian leaders and the forces standing behind them today. No-one can influence our will. We have proven it – both during and after the war. If necessary, we will prove it again in any way or form,” said Aliyev.

Asbarez: Pashinyan Further Distances His Government from Artsakh

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addresses Parliament on Apr. 18

In remarks made in Parliament on Tuesday, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, in his usual combative tone, further distanced himself and his government from Artsakh, saying that when Armenia agreed to negotiate with Azerbaijan based on the Madrid Principles in 2007 it recognized Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan.

Pashinyan was in parliament to present a progress report on his government’s so-called 2021-2026 Action Plan, with an emphasis on achievements in 2022.

The remarks about Artsakh were made in response to an opposition Armenia faction lawmaker’s question regarding the absence of advancing self-determination for the people of Artsakh from the 2022 report.

Pashinyan, in his usual tone of blaming the current situation on his predecessors, claimed that “negotiations legacy” that he inherited in 2018, when he came to power, already stipulated that Armenia had recognized Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan.

The Armenian prime minister’s remarks came on the same day that President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan demanded that Armenia announce that “Karabakh is Azerbaijan,” recalling Pashinyan’s infamous statement in Stepanakert that “Artsakh is Armenia.”

Pashinyan also said that Armenia has fully recognized Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and anticipated that Azerbaijan does the same by “recognizing the entire territory of the Armenian SSR as the Republic of Armenia.”

“The peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan would become realistic if the two countries recognize each other’s territorial integrity without ambiguities and traps and assume obligation to not make territorial claims against each other, now or ever,” Pashinyan told lawmakers.
Pashinyan reminded that such an agreement was reached with the Azerbaijani president during their meetings in Prague and Sochi on October 6 and October 31 in 2022 respectively.

Pashinyan said that Azerbaijan’s accusations that Armenia is refusing to fully recognize Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity during the peace treaty talks are untrue. He said that Armenia itself offered to attach the maps of the Armenian and Azerbaijani SSRs – approved by the USSR – to the treaty as the basis of territorial integrity of the two countries.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that peace is possible if Armenia itself will clearly acknowledge that it recognizes the 29,800 square kilometers area, more specifically the territory of the former Armenian SSR, as constituting the Republic of Armenia.

“Peace is possible if we, in all our international relations, clearly record not just for today but also for the future, that we recognize the Republic of Armenia as 29,800 square kilometers territory, more specifically the territory of the Armenian SSR, where we gained independence in 1991. And not only don’t we have any territorial claims towards any other country, but we will never have any,” Pashinyan said in parliament during debates of the 2022 report of the government action plan.

Pashinyan added that if this idea isn’t recorded and transformed into a social psychology of the society, no one will allow Armenia to develop, because no one will deal with the idea that Armenia is developing and getting stronger.

The prime minister’s message was advancing his so-called peace agenda, saying that regional stability and peace will contribute to a “consensus between the East and the West,” seemingly alluding that his agenda may bridge the current divide between the West and Russia.

Pashinyan said that he believed that a great opportunity exists to normalize relations between Armenia and Turkey, saying Yerevan’s response to the devastating earthquake in Turkey greatly increased those chances.
