Film: Indian director Shekhar Kapur to helm Armenian Genocide tale ‘Three Apples Fell From Heaven’

Indian film director Shekhar Kapur will direct Three Apples Fell From Heaven, a film based on the Micheline Aharonian Marcom novel adapted by Motorcycle Diaries writer José Rivera, Deadline reports.

The film is set in 1915-1917 as Turks slaughtered Armenians, and revolves around a young female refugee taken in by Turkish neighbors after the death of her parents. Her childhood shattered, she now views the remains of her world through a Muslim veil, as several tragic characters circle around her.

While the Armenian genocide is a century old, there is an eerie parallel to the refugee crisis, beyond Kapur’s memory of his own family forced to flee Delhi as refugees during the partition of India. The filmmakers made available a clip of the young women Kapur has auditioned to play the lead role; they are refugees from Aleppo whose descendants fled there to escape the Armenian genocide and who’ve come back to escape the violence that has devastated Syria.

The clip is a sad reminder of how little the world has really reformed for refugees. This becomes the first film from a new social justice storytelling production company, Disruptive Narrative, which will launch at Cannes as part of Sunday’s Refugee Voices In Film day, presented by IEFTA, the UNHCR and Marché du Film. The company is founded by leading human rights lawyer, Jen Robinson, of Doughty St Chambers , and Syrian-Armenian actress/writer/producer, Sona Tatoyan.

ANKARA: US governor denies parole for Armenian terrorist who killed Turkish diplomat

US governor denies parole for Armenian terrorist who killed Turkish diplomat

After pleas from Turkish American groups and officials from the Trump
administration, California Governor Jerry Brown overturned on
Wednesday a decision to parole an Armenian terrorist serving life
sentence for murdering Turkey's consul general in 1982.

According to SF Gate, a news website of the Bay Area, Gov. Brown said
on Monday that he believes Harry "Hampig" Sassounian would be "an
unreasonable danger to society if released."

Sassounian was originally sentenced to life imprisonment without
possibility of parole; however, he became eligible for parole after
admitting his guilt and formally apologizing in 2002. Previous demands
by Sassounian were rejected by a parole board in 2006, 2010, 2013 and
2015.

Describing the killing as "a deliberate, planned assassination of a
diplomat," Brown said he wasn't convinced that Sassounian regretted
his mistake and that he "was committed to peace".

Brown also cited a letter Sassounian sent from prison to an Armenian
military newspaper 5 years ago for his decision, and said it
undermined his rehabilitation efforts.

The decision was unexpected for many, for Brown has affirmed almost 82
percent of the parole board decisions --far more than any other
governor.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Attorney General Jeff
Sessions had opposed Sassounian's release and had called the murder
"an attack on diplomacy itself." They had sent a letter to the parole
board in March to express their concerns.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs had also condemned the
decision, saying it was based on local political dynamics and it did
not match with the spirit of fight and cooperation against terror

Back in December, the parole board had accepted the demand of
Sassounian, a terrorist from the right-wing Armenian Revolutionary
Army (ARA) terror group who killed Kemal Arıkan, Turkey's consul
general to Los Angeles, on Jan. 28, 1982.

Between 1973 and 1993, 33 Turkish diplomats, employees and families
based in the Turkish diplomatic missions abroad were murdered by
Armenian terrorist groups, with the Armenian Secret Army for the
Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) being the most infamous one. ARA,
previously known as Justice Commandos for the Armenian Genocide
(JCAG), was affiliated with the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF
– Dashnaktsutyun), which is a political party dating back to the early
20th century and still operates in Armenia. These militant groups,
cooperating with each other and other terrorist groups despite
differing in ideology, were mainly based in civil-war-torn Lebanon,
from where Sassounian's family emigrated to the U.S.

Armenian terrorist groups also targeted civilians in various attacks,
including the 1982 Ankara Esenboğa Airport attack, which killed nine,
and the 1983 Paris Orly Airport attack, which killed eight.

BAKU: Moscow urges Karabakh conflict sides to avoid further escalation

APA, Azerbaijan

Moscow urges the parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to avoid any further escalation in the conflict zone, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told a briefing on Thursday, an APA correspondent reported from Moscow.

Russia that continues to act as an intermediary in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict condemns violations of the ceasefire on the line of contact, noted Zakharova.

As for future meetings on the settlement of the conflict, Zakharova said there is nothing to announce. “As soon as the information is available, we will provide it,” she added.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict entered its modern phase when the Armenian SRR made territorial claims against the Azerbaijani SSR in 1988.

A fierce war broke out between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. As a result of the war, Armenian armed forces occupied some 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory which includes Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent districts (Lachin, Kalbajar, Aghdam, Fuzuli, Jabrayil, Gubadli and Zangilan), and over a million Azerbaijanis became refugees and internally displaced people.

The military operations finally came to an end when Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in Bishkek in 1994.

Dealing with the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the OSCE Minsk Group, which was created after the meeting of the CSCE (OSCE after the Budapest summit held in December 1994) Ministerial Council in Helsinki on 24 March 1992. The Group’s members include Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, the United States, France, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Belarus, Finland and Sweden.

Besides, the OSCE Minsk Group has a co-chairmanship institution, comprised of Russian, the US and French co-chairs, which began operating in 1996.

Resolutions 822, 853, 874 and 884 of the UN Security Council, which were passed in short intervals in 1993, and other resolutions adopted by the UN General Assembly, PACE, OSCE, OIC, and other organizations require Armenia to unconditionally withdraw its troops from Nagorno-Karabakh.

ARMENIAN ASSEMBLY RENEWS ITS CALL FOR INVESTIGATION REGARDING TURKEY’S
SURREPTITOUS INFLUENCE IN THE UNITED STATES

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With the latest revelations regarding Lieutenant
General Michael Flynn's opposition in concert with Turkey against a U.S.
military operation that had been planned for months, the Armenian Assembly of America
(Assembly) renewed its call for a thorough investigation of Turkey's
surreptitious influence over U.S. officials to the detriment of U.S. national
security.

Today, the Assembly sent letters to the Senate
Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr (R-NC), Vice Chairman Mark Warner (D-VA),
House Intelligence Chairman David Nunes (R-CA), and Ranking Member Adam Schiff
(D-CA) highlighting key concerns on this matter.

"Time and time again, we have seen Turkey's
corrosive attempts to influence U.S. policy. Given the aforementioned issues,
we respectfully renew our request for a thorough investigation of Turkish
activities that compromise America's national security and democratic
institutions," Assembly Co-Chairs Anthony Barsamian and Van Krikorian said.

Armenian Caucus Co-Chair Congressman Frank Pallone,
Jr. stated: "It is even more troublesome that [Flynn] failed to disclose
his actions and that he may have compromised our efforts to defeat ISIS in
order to please his former client. With Mr. Flynn's willingness to conceal
relationships with foreign powers, we must investigate if there are other
interactions that have yet to be revealed."

According to a report in McClatchy Washington
Bureau, "Flynn's rejection of a military operation that had been months in
the making raises questions about what other key decisions he might have
influenced…"

This new revelation follows Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn's
November 8th op-ed in The Hill wherein Flynn argued that "we need to see
the world from Turkey's perspective." Flynn was paid over $500,000 for his
work on behalf of Turkey according to his recent FARA filing, which he failed
to disclose until he was caught.

News about Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn comes just after
a brutal attack by Turkish bodyguards against those peacefully protesting in
front of the Turkish Ambassador's residence.

Established in 1972, the Armenian Assembly of
America is the largest Washington-based nationwide organization promoting
public understanding and awareness of Armenian issues. The Assembly is a
non-partisan, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt membership organization.

BAKU: MP: Certain circles in Russia do not want to take Azerbaijan’s interests into account

Azeri-Press news agency (APA), Azerbaijan
 Wednesday

MP: Certain circles in Russia do not want to take Azerbaijan's
interests into account

The liquidation of the All-Russian Azerbaijani Congress (VAK) is one
of the last examples of Russia's attitude towards Azerbaijan, Fazil
Mustafa, Azerbaijani MP, Chairman of the Great Establishment Party
told APA.

He was commenting on the cancellation by Russia's Supreme Court of the
VAK registration on the suit of the Russian Justice Ministry on May
15.

'Despite Azerbaijan's efforts to build neighborly relations with
Russia, certain circles in Russia do not want to take Azerbaijan's
interests into account and does not avoid taking the most drastic
steps against Azerbaijan,' he said.

Fazil Mustafa noted that these circles merely do not want there to be
any organization in Russia serving Azerbaijan's interests.

'They want VAK to be an organization that is directly controlled from
the Kremlin and that fulfills Kremlin's desires. The Congress has
always supported the current government of Russia and never taken any
step against the Kremlin. But what seems to be the case is that they
desire an organization which is absolutely loyal to them and which
speaks out against Azerbaijan. There are differences in views. By
having taken such a step, they demonstrated their attitude towards the
Azerbaijani state, which is unlikely to develop in positively,' he
said.

The MP added: 'The Azerbaijani government has already expressed its
discontent over the VAK liquidation and the Azerbaijani public is
quite sensitive towards this issue. This discontent would probably
force Russia to rethink to some extent and it can give up this
position.

He stressed that the VAK liquidation is not a legal but a political step.

'If this decision was not politically motivated, the organization
which represents an ethnic group in Russia wouldn't be allowed to be
damaged in such way. Taking such a step in a place where over a
million Azerbaijanis live is not good for the government. The
fulfillment of such a political decision is actually the product of
narrow-mindedness,' the MP said.

Speaking to APA of the VAK liquidation, political analyst Gabil
Huseynli said that such a step stems from the pro-Armenian position of
anti-Azerbaijani forces in Russia which are trying to strain relations
between Russia and Azerbaijan.

'Russia has recently given pleasant gifts to Armenia like the creation
of a joint Russian-Armenian armed group headed by an Armenians, free
provision of Armenia with a large number of modern weapons, including
Iskander missiles. As if some dictates Armenia to withdraw from the
negotiation process, which is now in a state of stagnation,' he noted.

Huseynli went on to say: 'In addition, Armenia further increased
military rhetoric and is trying to exasperate Azerbaijan through
threats and blackmails. The situation on the frontline remains tense,
the settlements of Azerbaijan are under fire. However, our army is
giving adequate responses. In other words, Armenia is trying to
involve Azerbaijan in a large-scale war through provocations.'

The political analyst said he believes that the VAK liquidation aims
to revive and restore AzerRoss, an organization headed by Soyun
Sadigov under patronage of Azerbaijan's former deputy prime minister
Abbas Abbasov.
